chatmix command fails with Arctis Nova 7 in Gentoo via media-sound/headsetcontrol (3.1.0-r1 )

Description

The command
sudo headsetcontrol -h | grep -i "chatmix"
Brings up
-m, --chatmix Get chat-mix-dial level (0-128, <64 for game, >64 for chat)
However sudo headsetcontrol -m 8
says
Non-option argument 8

I assume I am using the command correctly, but there is no guide.

I should mention that I do not use an initramfs, the drivers for steel series are baked into my kernel

The description of the option says it all: Get chat-mix-dial level. It's not for setting the level, but for reading the position of the physical chat-mix dial on the headphones. So the proper command is just:
headsetcontrol -m
