Zipping entire folders (with subfolders) possible?

Dear Zippers,

is it possible to zip an entire folder containing subfolders and files in subfolders?

If this is possible, it would be really helpfull to add the code-snippet as example (because I think this is a very common use-case for the library). Currently, I only found code that writes multiple files in the same (root) folder of the zip-archive.

If this is not possible, it would be great information to share in the readme.md, so one has not to search for this info.

Of course it's possible. Zip files don't store any directory entries. It only stores files and files can have slash in the name.

For example, here is a zip file with some empty files in a sub-directory.

julia> w = ZipFile.Writer("/tmp/example.zip");

julia> ZipFile.addfile(w, "foo/c.txt");

julia> ZipFile.addfile(w, "foo/bar/a.txt");

julia> ZipFile.addfile(w, "foo/bar/b.txt");

julia> close(w)

julia>
$ unzip -l /tmp/example.zip
Archive:  /tmp/example.zip
  Length      Date    Time    Name
---------  ---------- -----   ----
        0  2023-01-13 01:20   foo/c.txt
        0  2023-01-13 01:20   foo/bar/a.txt
        0  2023-01-13 01:20   foo/bar/b.txt
---------                     -------
        0                     3 files

To implement your function, you'd get a list of files using walkdir, read the content of each file from the filesystem and write it to the zip file.

Jep, I solved it this way too:

zipfile = "[path to my ZIP file].zip"
comprDir = "[path you want to zip]"
compress = true # or false, like you wish
zdir = ZipFile.Writer(zipfile) 
for (root, dirs, files) in walkdir(comprDir)
    for file in files
        filepath = joinpath(root, file)
        f = open(filepath, "r")
        content = read(f, String)
        close(f)

        zippath = subtractPath(filepath, comprDir * "/")
        println("\t$(zippath)")
        zf = ZipFile.addfile(zdir, zippath; method=(compress ? ZipFile.Deflate : ZipFile.Store));
        write(zf, content)
    end
end
close(zdir)

Anyway would be a nice hint in the docs or readme.md I think?

@fhs I thought of trying this before you replied because it's super intuitive. Providing /foo/bar/bb.txt path but I you replied faster. Thanks a ton @fhs and @ThummeTo
