[Bug]: CapacitorHttp requests do not fire on Android 17 randomly

Current Behavior

CapacitorHttp.request() never fires on Android 17 over Wi-Fi with Google DNS in Play Store build only

• Upgraded from Capacitor 7.x to 8.5.1
• Angular + Ionic, using CapacitorHttp.request() for all API calls
• minifyEnabled false (R8 not involved)

With CapacitorHttp: { enabled: true }, HTTPS requests to our API never execute, but only under a specific combination of conditions:

All rows are the same codebase and the same version. Only the store build, on Android 17, on a network using Google DNS, fails.

In Chrome DevTools (chrome://inspect):

• Android 16 and 14: the request appears in the network tab and completes normally.
• Android 17 (failing case): the request never appears in the network tab at all. No pending entry, no failed entry.

DNS records themselves appear healthy: the domain resolves correctly from a Windows machine against 8.8.8.8 (Resolve-DnsName returns valid A records, no SERVFAIL). Our API is hosted on Render behind Cloudflare.

Expected Behavior

The request either executes and resolves, or rejects with an error. Currently it does neither, no network activity and no exception which leaves the app with no way to detect or recover from the failure.

Hey @jordankkk thanks for opening this issue.

It's going to be hard for us to look into this without a reproduction sample that illustrates the issue, and if it just happens in a Play Store app. Are you able to share a sample application that contains a network request that would fail for those conditions?

The "Locally generated APK" is it debug, or release?

Does it happen all the time on any Android 17 device, on any request?

• so far only one phsical android 17 device to test

Today Test environment:

• Physical device: Google Pixel 8 Pro
• Android 17 (latest)
• Tested with:
  • Google DNS
  • Cloudflare DNS
  • No manually configured DNS
  • Mobile data
• App storage data was cleared before each test when switching between different networks.

I tested it again using Google DNS, Cloudflare DNS, no manually configured DNS, and mobile data, but the requests stopped working again.

The weird thing is that after restarting the phone, everything works again.

Could I know what might possibly be causing this issue?

I have faced this CapacitorHttp.request() not firing issue before on Capacitor 7, but after updating to the latest Capacitor v7, the issue was gone.

Since this issue now seems to happen randomly and is really difficult to reproduce with the Play Store build, if I face this issue again, I will try my best to provide a repo.

My app code for this is actually very simple:

CapacitorHttp.enabled = true; // capacitor.config.ts

CapacitorHttp.request(); //wrap this for api call in angular

If it has only happened on one Android 17 device (at least that's how I read the message), maybe there could be something wrong with that device?

If you can try locally with a release apk, to become "closer" to play store scenario, just to check if the issue happens more often.
