Synchronize/Fake system clock to be consistent with semi-real-time

Currently the system clock defaults to a time in the year 2000 which requires the user to set it.

There should be a configuration option which specifies whether the clock synchronizes to real time or not.

There is an option for syncing the system clock, however it appears to be non-functional.
