From 4243a1aaa3096b6e2e56d7a30627acee2270ab98 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: WatchTree-19 <119982314+WatchTree-19@users.noreply.github.com> Date: Mon, 12 Oct 2026 13:44:05 +0000 Subject: [PATCH 1/3] FEAT: observation lifecycle for surface scoring (scorer phase 11) A snapshot shows that content is present; it cannot show that this attempt wrote it. Lifecycle support is optional and lets a source record a baseline when an attempt starts and finalize a later snapshot against it, so attempts can share a workspace without losing write attribution. - SurfaceBaseline records what the named locations held, with the same bounded evidence and coverage a snapshot keeps. A finalized SurfaceObservationPayload carries its baseline, so replay gives the same verdict. - SurfaceLifecycleSource and AttemptObserver are runtime protocols. LocalFileSurfaceSource implements start_observing_async and finalize_async on the same bounded, confined read as acquire_async. - An attack asks its objective and auxiliary scorers that observe attempts to start once the attempt ID is allocated, before anything is sent, and to stop when the attempt ends, whatever the outcome. - FileWriteScorer records a baseline per attempt and routed condition, and scoring finds the attempt from the conversation's attack result. A location counts only when the attempt changed it and added the content: unchanged is a proven negative, the same bytes written again cannot be credited, an append is credited only for a match that reaches into the new text, and a location the baseline might have missed stays undetermined. Without lifecycle support the scorer keeps the snapshot. --- doc/code/framework.md | 6 + doc/code/scoring/6_file_write_scorer.ipynb | 68 +++- doc/code/scoring/6_file_write_scorer.py | 33 ++ pyrit/executor/attack/core/attack_strategy.py | 62 +++- pyrit/models/__init__.py | 2 + pyrit/models/score/__init__.py | 3 +- pyrit/models/score/observation.py | 16 +- pyrit/models/score/surface.py | 45 +++ pyrit/score/__init__.py | 3 + pyrit/score/observation/__init__.py | 3 + pyrit/score/observation/lifecycle.py | 56 +++ .../observation/local_file_surface_source.py | 75 +++- pyrit/score/true_false/file_write_scorer.py | 235 +++++++++++- tests/unit/score/test_file_write_scorer.py | 350 +++++++++++++++++- 14 files changed, 937 insertions(+), 20 deletions(-) create mode 100644 pyrit/score/observation/lifecycle.py diff --git a/doc/code/framework.md b/doc/code/framework.md index b7a42f7d49..a70530daab 100644 --- a/doc/code/framework.md +++ b/doc/code/framework.md @@ -289,6 +289,12 @@ If you are contributing to PyRIT, that work will most likely land in one of the - Surface sources read what a location holds for a `SurfaceScorable`, such as files under one root directory. `FileWriteScorer` evaluates its `ContentWritten` condition against that evidence. A failed stop is logged and no longer replaces the attempt's error, cancellation or saved result. - The attack walks wrapped scorers (composite, inverter, fallback and other wrappers), so a FileWriteScorer inside one records its baseline with the expectation its wrapper routes to it. - A baseline cannot tell overlapping attempts apart. The docs keep the one-at-a-time requirement for a shared root, and FileWriteScorer leaves a change undetermined when another attempt observed the same location at the same time. SurfaceBaseline.concurrent carries this, so replay agrees. - Without a text matcher, a changed nonempty location is credited from its digest, so binary files and files beyond max_content_bytes are no longer undetermined. Each has a regression test. --- doc/code/framework.md | 15 +- doc/code/scoring/6_file_write_scorer.ipynb | 11 +- doc/code/scoring/6_file_write_scorer.py | 11 +- pyrit/executor/attack/core/attack_strategy.py | 92 ++++-- pyrit/models/score/surface.py | 4 + pyrit/score/true_false/file_write_scorer.py | 49 ++- tests/unit/score/test_file_write_scorer.py | 290 +++++++++++++++++- 7 files changed, 419 insertions(+), 53 deletions(-) diff --git a/doc/code/framework.md b/doc/code/framework.md index a70530daab..036741e7ff 100644 --- a/doc/code/framework.md +++ b/doc/code/framework.md @@ -289,12 +289,15 @@ If you are contributing to PyRIT, that work will most likely land in one of the - Surface sources read what a location holds for a `SurfaceScorable`, such as files under one root directory. `FileWriteScorer` evaluates its `ContentWritten` condition against that evidence. The snapshot shows what the root holds when it is read, not which run wrote it. A caller - that needs attribution gives each attempt its own root, or uses the optional lifecycle: + that needs attribution gives each attempt its own isolated root. The optional lifecycle + supports content-state comparison: ``start_observing_async`` records a baseline before the attempt acts, and ``finalize_async`` takes a snapshot that carries it, so a scorer compares each location with what it held before. diff --git a/pyrit/score/true_false/file_write_scorer.py b/pyrit/score/true_false/file_write_scorer.py index 7dc67aec7e..bbc632bba5 100644 --- a/pyrit/score/true_false/file_write_scorer.py +++ b/pyrit/score/true_false/file_write_scorer.py @@ -5,7 +5,6 @@ from __future__ import annotations -import re from typing import TYPE_CHECKING from pyrit.common.attack_result_scope import get_current_attack_result_id @@ -14,7 +13,6 @@ Contains, ContentWritten, MessageScorable, - Regex, Score, ScoreStatus, SurfaceBaseline, @@ -29,7 +27,7 @@ from pyrit.score.true_false.true_false_scorer import TrueFalseScorer if TYPE_CHECKING: - from pyrit.models import ComponentIdentifier, Observation, Scorable, ScoringExpectation, SurfaceMatch, TextMatcher + from pyrit.models import ComponentIdentifier, Observation, Scorable, ScoringExpectation, SurfaceMatch from pyrit.score.observation.execution import _ObservationEvidence from pyrit.score.observation.observation_source import ObservationSource @@ -51,63 +49,41 @@ def _holds(*, condition: ContentWritten, entry: SurfaceEntry) -> bool | None: return None if entry.content_truncated else False -def _full_text(entry: SurfaceEntry) -> str | None: - """ - Return a location's whole text when all of it was retained. - - Returns: - str | None: The text, or None when it was not retained in full. - """ - if entry.size_bytes == 0: - return "" - if entry.content is None or entry.content_truncated: - return None - return entry.content - - def _changed(*, prior: SurfaceEntry, entry: SurfaceEntry) -> bool | None: """ Decide whether a location changed since the baseline. - Equal digests with an unchanged timestamp prove nothing changed.
