Language support

Greek (Ελληνικά) is a highly inflected language with rich morphology and complex grammar. It has three grammatical genders (masculine, feminine, neuter) that affect articles, adjectives, and nouns. Nouns are declined in cases (nominative, genitive, accusative, vocative), which makes correct agreement very important for learners.

Verbs are conjugated according to person, number, tense, mood, voice, and aspect. The distinction between imperfective and perfective aspect is particularly important in Greek and often difficult for non-native speakers. There is also extensive use of irregular verbs and stem changes.

Greek uses accent marks (τόνοι) that are essential for correct pronunciation and meaning, so easy access to accented characters is crucial.
Scribe can help Greek learners by:

Providing correct verb conjugations across tenses and aspects

Showing noun gender and plural forms

Supporting accented characters and common diacritics

Helping with agreement between articles, nouns, and adjectives

This would make Scribe very useful for both learners of Modern Greek and bilingual users.

Keyboard variants

Greek generally uses one main keyboard layout based on the Greek alphabet. However, there are two common practical variants:

Greek keyboard (monotonic system): The standard modern layout used in Greece, with a single accent (τόνος). This is the most important one to support.

Greek polytonic input (advanced users): Used mainly in classical studies, ancient Greek, and academic texts, with multiple accents and breathing marks. This could be optional or advanced.

Additionally:

Many users type Greek using a Greek QWERTY-style layout where Greek letters map to Latin keys.

Support for easy switching between Greek and Latin keyboards is very important for bilingual typing (Greek–English).

So the main focus should be:

Standard Modern Greek monotonic layout

Optional support for polytonic Greek

Smooth switching between Greek and Latin keyboards

Contribution

I would be happy to help by contributing Greek (el) localization support to the Scribe project.

I can:

• Create a new Greek translation file (el.json) based on the existing en-US.json
• Translate the UI strings and user-facing texts into Modern Greek
• Follow the existing localization structure and formatting rules
• Keep placeholders, variables, and JSON structure intact

Greek currently seems to be missing from the available languages, and I would like to help add full support for it.
This would make Scribe more accessible to Greek speakers and learners of the Greek language.

Please let me know if this approach works for you and if there are any specific guidelines I should follow before starting.

Hi @AlexTsimerikas 👋 Thanks so much for opening this issue as well! You could generally follow the work from @catreedle that was done in #508. We still need to merge this PR, but we'll get to this soon once we get a few more things with the app finalized. We likely wouldn't be able to release the keyboard soon as is the case with Indonesian, but it's fine to add a development version of it now. Please let us know if this would be of interest to you 😊
