Trying to add the f-droid repository gave me the following errror.

We hit this exact SSLHandshakeException: Chain validation failed error last month while testing on API 25 emulators. Older Android releases lack the ISRG Root X1 certificate that F-Droid's servers require now. The handshake just fails.

Our workaround was updating the system clock first. If your device time is correct, the system trust store is simply too old. You can either bundle the Let's Encrypt root in your network security config or manually install it via the user credentials storage. Does this happen on a physical device or an emulator?
