Background: Crawled Markdown Pipelines & Downstream Tool Calling
In agentic RAG and data extraction pipelines built with Crawl4AI, agents crawl live websites into LLM-ready Markdown and frequently synthesize or verify records against downstream databases using Model Context Protocol (MCP) toolkits.
Because web content is inherently untrusted, this architecture introduces a critical security vulnerability: Indirect Prompt Injection.
If a crawled web page contains hidden prompt instructions (e.g. within an article, forum post, or raw HTML comment):
An LLM agent without strict tool-level query guardrails may pass mutating SQL straight to a database connector tool, leading to catastrophic data loss.
Layered Defense: Application-Level Query Inspection + Read-Only Database Roles
To eliminate this vulnerability without crippling agent analytical capabilities, the open-source MCP Production Kit implements an application-level token & regex inspection pipeline:
--and/* */SQL comments commonly used to mask stacked injection payloads.category = 'DROP_PENDING') don't trigger false alarms.SELECTorWITH, and validates against 16 mutation keywords (DROP,DELETE,TRUNCATE,ALTER,UPDATE,INSERT,CREATE,REPLACE, etc.).(Note: This application-level guardrail uses token & regex sanitization, not a full SQL AST compiler, and is engineered to work in tandem with database-level read-only permissions like
GRANT SELECT).Stdio Stream Isolation for Subprocess Callers
When running TypeScript MCP servers as subprocesses in Python/Crawl4AI agent runtimes, standard
console.log()output pollutesstdout, breaking JSON-RPC framing. The kit routes all logging strictly toprocess.stderr, reservingprocess.stdoutsolely for protocol frames.Architecture Comparison: Open-Source Core vs. Pro Pack ($19 USD)
