Description
I store several small VeraCrypt volumes in Dropbox. They are typically one to five gigabyte in size.
Prior to upgrading to v1.26.29, Dropbox began syncing the volume as soon as I closed it in the VeraCrypt GUI.
After upgrading to v1.26.29, I have to close and reopen Dropbox to get it to sync newly closed volumes.
Expected behavior
I expect Dropbox to begin syncing as soon as the volume is closed. It used to do this and has always done this.
Observed behavior
Dropbox stays stuck as if the file is still locked. Perhaps some lock handle is not being released in VeraCrypt?
Steps to reproduce
- Install Dropbox (trial version is sufficient, you get 2 gigabyte of space).
- Create a small, say, 256 megabyte VeraCrypt NTFS volume on the desktop.
- Once finished, move the VeraCrypt volume to the Dropbox folder.
- Let Dropbox sync.
- Mount the volume in the VeraCrypt v1.26.29 GUI.
- Copy a small file to the volume.
- Unmount the volume in the VeraCrypt GUI.
- Observe that Dropbox does not sync the volume.
- Exit Dropbox.
- Restart Dropbox.
- Notice that Dropbox immediately begins to synchronize the volume to the cloud.

Your Environment
VeraCrypt v1.26.29 for Windows 11 x64.
Windows 11 x64 US English 25H2 build 26200.8737
Windows 11 64-bit
Comment
I am confident that the issue is with VeraCrypt v1.26.29 because the problem began immediately after upgrading from the last release (from 2025, I think). Dropbox self-upgrades so in theory this could be an issue with Dropbox but I don't believe this to be the case as Dropbox has always worked great with VeraCrypt containers.
