A small Windows background utility that stops Discord audio from leaking into the SteelSeries Sonar virtual microphone, which is especially useful when streaming or recording.
Download one file, pick your options, press Save. It runs in the background from then on, with no tray icon. To open the settings window, simply open the file again.
Sonar (part of SteelSeries GG) creates virtual audio devices in Windows, such as Sonar - Gaming, Sonar - Chat, and Sonar - Microphone. The idea is to route each app to the right channel and control each channel's volume separately.
However, Discord can open an audio session on the Sonar - Microphone device itself. Its audio then ends up in the virtual microphone path instead of staying in the Chat channel.
The app monitors audio sessions on the SteelSeries Sonar - Microphone device. When Discord opens a session there, it is muted immediately.
Discord (Stable), PTB, Canary, Development, Vesktop, Equibop, Legcord, ArmCord, WebCord and Dorion. Only these exact process names are muted; others can be added with ExtraProcessNames (see Troubleshooting).
Discord running in a web browser is not supported, since it cannot be distinguished from other browser tabs.
You can hide these two devices from the Windows device list to reduce clutter.
This is optional because SteelSeries recommends keeping Discord's output on the Chat device, and hiding it may cut Discord audio for some users. If Discord goes silent after enabling this, turn the option off.
| Problem | How it's handled |
|---|---|
| Discord audio leaking into the virtual mic | Automatically mutes Discord's session on that device |
| Repeating manual setup | No need to open the volume mixer and mute Discord every time |
| Cluttered audio device list | Optional hide feature |
| Protection lost after restarting Sonar or Windows | Reconnects automatically |
| Worry about leaving the system in an odd state | On exit or Windows shutdown, the app unmutes and restores only the devices it hid |
- Make sure SteelSeries GG is installed and running.
- Download
SteelSeriesDiscordStreamFix-win-Setup.exefrom the Releases page. - Open it. A small window shows the options. Nothing is installed until you press Save. Then it installs for your Windows account only (no admin rights) and starts protecting Discord.
- To change settings later, open the same file again (or run the app from the Start menu).
Already installed? Opening a newer file asks whether to update. Choose No and your installed version simply opens, nothing changes.
The file is not code-signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen may warn on first run ("More info" > "Run anyway").
The app checks for new versions in the background but never installs one by itself. When a version is found you get a normal Windows notification. Click it to choose Update now, Skip this version (no more notifications for it) or Later. The Settings window shows the same choices, and Check for Updates works at any time.
Once installed, there's nothing to do. Join a Discord call or start streaming, and Discord's session on Sonar - Microphone is muted automatically. Check the settings window to confirm the Sonar connection status.
- Discord went silent after enabling "Hide Sonar - Chat / Gaming": turn that option off.
- Status shows "Sonar not found": make sure Sonar is running. The app retries every 30 seconds.
- Something looks wrong: open the log file from the settings window and attach it when reporting an issue. The log starts with the app version and Windows build, and your Windows user name is replaced by
%USERPROFILE%, but read it once before posting. - Sonar Chat / Gaming stay hidden after a crash, a forced kill or a manual delete of the app: open Sound settings > More sound settings > Playback, right-click an empty area, tick Show Disabled Devices, then right-click SteelSeries Sonar - Chat / Gaming and choose Enable.
- Another Discord client (a fork) is not muted: add a string value
ExtraProcessNamestoHKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\SteelSeriesDiscordStreamFixwith the process names separated by commas (e.g.MyDiscordFork,AnotherClient), then restart the app. - The app crashed: it restarts itself (at most 3 times in a row) and shows a notification. If it was closed abnormally (forced kill, power loss), the next start shows a notification too.
- Discord gets un-muted again by itself: after Discord opens a session the app re-mutes it for 15 seconds, at most 3 times. If Discord restores its state later than that on your PC, set the DWORD values
RemuteWindowSeconds(5-120) and/orMaxRemutes(1-10) inHKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\SteelSeriesDiscordStreamFixand restart the app. The log says clearly when the app gives up on a session. - No warning notifications while gaming: Windows can hide notifications during Focus Assist / game mode. The current status is always visible in the Settings window.
Build the app with dotnet build SteelSeriesDiscordStreamFix.csproj -c Release and run the unit tests with dotnet test Tests/SteelSeriesDiscordStreamFix.Tests.csproj. The tests cover the pure logic only (re-mute policy, hide-ownership rules, log redaction, Discord process matching, crash-restart limits). GitHub Actions builds both projects and runs the tests on every push and pull request.

- Windows only, and Sonar must be installed
- Discord in the browser is not supported
- Hiding relies on an undocumented Windows API (
SetEndpointVisibility) and may break after a Windows update
SteelSeries Discord Stream Fix does one job well: it keeps Discord audio out of Sonar's virtual microphone path without any effort on your part. With the latest changes, it shuts down more safely, produces fewer false alerts, avoids loops, and keeps the sensitive options optional and clearly explained.
