feat(dbt): dbt mart optimizer commands, skills and a review schema-lag lane - #1539

Adds `.claude-plugin/marketplace.json` and a plugin at `plugins/claude-code/`
so `altimate-code` can be installed into Claude Code:
claude plugin marketplace add <this repo>
claude plugin install altimate-data@altimate-code
Four skills, each a thin wrapper that shells out to the `altimate` /
`altimate-dbt` binaries: `sql-review`, `dbt-pr-review`, `dbt-analyze`,
`dbt-schema-verify`. The `.opencode/skills/` bodies could not be reused
verbatim -- they instruct the model to call in-process opencode tools
(`sql_analyze`, `altimate_core_rewrite`, `dbt_lineage`) that do not exist
inside Claude Code, where shelling out to the binary is the only surface.
Two constraints are documented in the skills rather than papered over:
* **Jinja is a silent false green.** `altimate check` parses SQL, not Jinja.
A dbt model beginning `{{ config(...) }}` fails to parse at line 1, every
lint rule is skipped, and the lint block still reports zero findings.
Verified on `int_user_query_usage.sql`: `0 errors, 0 warnings` raw versus
3 real findings (`L049 clock_in_filter`, `L027 function-on-filter-column`,
`L030 select-without-limit`) once the Jinja was resolved. `sql-review` now
tells the reader to check `results.validate` for `E000` before trusting a
clean lint report, and to re-run against `dbt compile` output.
* **`altimate-dbt` is not published to npm** and is not part of the
`altimate` binary -- `bin/altimate-dbt` loads a `dist/` that only exists
after a local `bun run build`. `dbt-analyze` and `dbt-schema-verify` now
resolve the tool and fall back to plain `dbt ls` / manifest inspection,
which covers the graph queries, instead of failing silently.
`claude plugin validate --strict` passes for both the marketplace and the
plugin manifest.
…d a dbt-project-review skill
`altimate review` could only review a diff. It defaults to the merge-base with
`origin/main`, so a model that has been wrong since the day it was written never
appears. `altimate-ingestion` has run the reviewer in CI for months with ~20
genuine project-level findings sitting behind it, untouched, for exactly that
reason.
**`altimate review --all`** reviews every model in the manifest instead — one
version each, no base ref. Mutually exclusive with `--base`/`--head` (it fails
loudly rather than ignoring one of them); `--severity`, `--json`, `--output`,
`--no-ai`, `--cwd`, `--manifest` and `--mode gate` all behave as they do today.
Three things the pipeline needed, because it is diff-oriented throughout:
* **The base-vs-head lanes are reported, not dropped.** `semantic_change`
(equivalence), `structural_diff`, `dbt_config_diff`, `column_breakage`,
`lineage_breakage`, `data_diff`, `topology_equivalence` and the schema.yml
test-removal detector all compare two versions of a model. They are listed on
the envelope's new `lanes.skipped[]` with the reason each could not run, and
rendered in the summary. A report that silently omits half the lanes is worse
than no report. `ai_review` is skipped too, for a different reason: it is
diff-grounded and caps at 20 files, so project-wide it would review an
arbitrary subset at unbounded cost.
* **The diff-anchored detectors needed a diff.** `ruleMatches` in
`rule-catalog.ts` is relevance-gated by construction — a rule only fires when
its signal is in added/removed lines. With no hunks the entire catalog and
most of `dbt-patterns.ts` evaluate to nothing while still reporting as "ran".
Project scope therefore presents each whole model as added
(`wholeFileAsAddedDiff`), which is also the honest shape: the review has no
previous version of the file.
* **Tiering is a diff cost-control and is bypassed.** `classifyPR` reads
changed-line counts and "was a contract block touched in the hunk"; with
neither it lands on `trivial` and silently disables most of the review.
Project scope pins `full`.
`--all` also counts how many models the engine lanes saw as dbt-COMPILED SQL
(`lanes.compiledModels` / `lanes.totalModels`) and warns when they diverge. This
is the `--all` form of the Jinja false-green: the SQL parser cannot read
`{{ config() }}`, so a raw-Jinja model yields zero AST findings, which reads
exactly like a clean one. Measured on `altimate-ingestion`'s
`transform-snowflake`: 207 of 214 models had no compiled artifact, so without
the warning the run would have reported 3% AST coverage as a project review.
Performance is not a concern at the stated size — 214 models, every lane, 6.6s.
The default `--max-models` cap of 500 exists so a pathological monorepo does not
look hung; it never truncates silently (stderr warning naming both counts), and
`--max-models 0` lifts it.
**`altimate dbt-perf`** is a new deterministic, no-LLM command modelled on
`altimate check`, over a new `altimate_core.dbt_perf` bridge method that wraps
the engine's `analyze_dbt_perf` / `analyze_dbt_perf_from_manifest` bindings.
Those bindings are NOT in the pinned `@altimateai/altimate-core@0.7.0`, so the
handler resolves them at call time rather than importing them — an
`import { analyzeDbtPerf }` would break every other core handler in that module
on the pinned release — and returns an actionable "build and link a local core"
message when they are absent, instead of an undefined-is-not-a-function stack.
The pin is unchanged.
Text output leads with the summary line, prints `skipped_rules` BEFORE the
findings (a rule that could not run is not a clean result), groups findings by
rule code, and prints `delete_scope` + `reader_requirements` in full for a
`MaterializationChange` guardrail — including an explicit "(not stated — verify
manually)" when the engine omits them. Those fields exist because a past
performance fix switched a materialization without dropping the old relation.
**`dbt-project-review`** ships in both skill systems: `.opencode/skills/` and
`plugins/claude-code/skills/` (the latter shells out to the `altimate` binary,
since in-process opencode tools do not exist there). Both make the diff-vs-
project split explicit — `dbt-pr-review` for "is this change safe",
`dbt-project-review` for "is this project healthy" — and both carry the
Jinja-false-green warning, sharpened for project scope: `dbt parse` is not
enough, because it writes a manifest but no compiled SQL.
`claude plugin validate ./plugins/claude-code --strict` passes.
Diff scope is untouched: the envelope's `scope` and `lanes` fields are emitted
only in project scope, so existing PR comments and stored verdicts are
byte-identical.

…y be cartesian
`--all` made the false-positive rate of the CROSS JOIN detector measurable for the
first time, and it was ~2/3 — at `critical`, in a category that is in the default
`blockOn` list, so every one of them was a merge-blocking verdict on correct SQL.
Measured on a real 215-model Trino project: 48 `cross join` occurrences across 27
models, of which 21 were `CROSS JOIN UNNEST` — the array-expansion idiom that
project's own `docs/DBT_GUIDELINES.md` §JSON Loading prescribes, on line 148.
The detector was one regex over one line: `/\bcross\s+join\b/i`. It now reads the
operand and suppresses three shapes, each because the row count is PROVABLE from
the text rather than merely likely:
* `CROSS JOIN UNNEST(...)` (plus `lateral`, `table`, `json_table`, `sequence`,
`explode`, `flatten`, `openjson`) — lateral expansion of one row's array, not a
join between two relations. The scan now runs over the joined added-lines block
rather than line by line, because the commonest formatting puts `unnest(` on the
line after `cross join` and a per-line scan cannot see it.
* `CROSS JOIN <cte>` where the CTE is an aggregate with no `GROUP BY`, or carries
`LIMIT 1` — a scalar broadcast of exactly one row. Both are guarantees of the
standard: `select max(x) from t` returns one row for any `t`. A `GROUP BY` CTE is
deliberately NOT suppressed; its cardinality is not knowable and a cross join has
no predicate to inspect.
* `CROSS JOIN ( select <constants> ... )` — no `FROM`, no `ref()`/`source()`, so the
row count is a literal and the expansion is bounded.
Suppression is per-occurrence, not per-file: a model with both an UNNEST and a real
cross join still fires.
**Multi-line block comments were being read as code.** `stripComments` is applied per
LINE, so a `/* ... */` spanning several lines is invisible to it — only the first and
last lines carry a delimiter. `int_query_time_bins.sql` was reported for a CROSS JOIN
by a comment explaining that the CROSS JOIN had been REMOVED. Fixed once where the
diff lines are assembled (`blankBlockComments`, newline-preserving so line numbers
survive), which fixes it for every detector and the declarative catalog, not just this
one. This was the larger effect of the two: 169 findings.
**`fanout_join` opts out of whole-file scope.** Presenting a whole model as added is
what makes the diff-anchored detectors evaluate it, but a detector whose CONDITION is
"this appeared in the diff" then degenerates. `fanout_join` ("a join was ADDED to a
model that aggregates") became "this model aggregates and has a join" — 65 of 215
models. `detectModelPatterns` takes a `wholeFile` option; the lane report names the
rule and the reason, so it is skipped visibly rather than quietly. Detectors that test
a whole-file property (`select *`, `ORDER BY` in a CTE) are unaffected.
Measured on the same project, `altimate review --all --no-ai`:
cross_join 27 -> 10 critical 30 -> 11
fanout_join 65 -> 0 warning 225 -> 129
total 1,518 -> 1,284
Ten regression fixtures, taken verbatim from the shapes above, including the two that
must STILL fire (a `GROUP BY` CTE, a `ref()`ed relation) and the mixed model.
Also pins the compiled-SQL layout that explains a surprising `--all` coverage number:
dbt writes microbatch compiles to `target/compiled/<project>/models/marts/<model>/`
— a DIRECTORY named after the model, one file per batch — and never writes the
model's own artifact. Counting files under `target/compiled/` therefore overstates
analysable models badly (115 files, 7 models on the measured project). Resolving a
partition as "the" compiled SQL would be wrong since each carries a different
event-time bound, so the miss is correct; the test records that it is deliberate.

… retire bq-cross-join-unnest
Three changes, all narrowing findings that cannot support their own claim.
**Cross-join regex fallback → `warning` / `medium`.** Severity should track how a
finding was ESTABLISHED, not only what it would mean if true. A genuine cartesian
product is critical, and core's AST `CartesianProduct` rule grades it that way
because it has a parse tree to prove it with. This detector only ever runs in
DEGRADED mode — `CORE_AST_COVERED["cross-join"]` suppresses it whenever core lint
works — and in that mode it cannot see the operand's cardinality at all. A heuristic
that cannot prove its claim should not hard-block a merge, and `join_risk` is in the
default `blockOn`, so `critical` here was a blocking verdict. When the AST rule can
prove it, that path still grades critical, which is the right split. The signal
survives: three warnings still trip `warningPatternThreshold`. The rule body now
names the residual shape — a cross join to a `{{ ref() }}`ed relation whose row
count is not knowable from the consuming file.
**`bq-cross-join-unnest` retired.** `CROSS JOIN UNNEST(arr)` is the only way to
expand an array in Trino, Presto, Athena and BigQuery, so the rule fired on every
correct use of the idiom: 10 findings on a real Trino project, 10 of them the plain
idiom, 0 genuine fan-out. It was also labelled "BigQuery:" while firing on a Trino
repo, and the `Rule` shape carries no dialect, so it could not be scoped rather than
retired. The concern it gestured at is now handled where it can be reasoned about —
`detectCrossJoin` classifies the operand and stays silent on UNNEST because a table
function is not a relation join. Same disposition as `bq-safe-cast-missing`.
**Multi-line comment blanking extended to Jinja `{# … #}`.** NOTE: `blankBlockComments`
is NOT a cross-join fix — it runs once where the diff lines are assembled, so it
applies to EVERY programmatic detector and to the whole declarative rule catalog.
The `/* … */` half (previous commit) removed 169 findings. dbt models routinely carry
long design notes in Jinja comments, and prose about SQL reads as SQL: a `{#- … -#}`
block citing `docs/dbt-microbatch-bottlenecks-2026-06-02.md §5.1/§6` was reported as
an unguarded DIVISION, and one quoting `365 / self.lookback_days` from a legacy
implementation likewise.
Cumulative effect on `altimate review --all --no-ai` over the 215-model project,
across this commit and the previous one:
critical 30 -> 1 warning 225 -> 139
total 1,518 -> 1,268
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
Four fixes from the project-scale survey, in descending order of how badly each
distorted the output.
**0. `ruleMatches` now blanks string-literal contents.** `dbt-patterns.ts` has
carried `stripLiterals` for its programmatic detectors since early on; the
declarative catalog never called it. The consequence was the worst single finding
in the product: the ONLY `critical` in a whole-project review of a 215-model repo
was `create-or-replace` matching inside `|| 'CREATE OR REPLACE TRANSIENT TABLE
instead as it will '` — a model emitting ADVICE TEXT about the statement. A
reviewer whose one blocking finding is a string literal is worse than one with no
findings at all.
Rules whose signal legitimately lives INSIDE a literal (a leading `%` wildcard,
`interval '1 day'`, an environment name) opt out with `literalsMatter: true`. The
catalog's own example/counter corpus identified all 21 of them mechanically: a
rule that needs literals and forgets the flag fails its positive example.
Two follow-on defects the corpus could NOT catch, both found by re-measuring:
* The corpus is a ONE-DIRECTIONAL oracle — it catches a rule that stops firing,
never one that starts over-firing. Blanking rewrites `= 'active'` to `= ''`,
which is exactly `empty-string-eq`'s pattern: it went 20 -> 214 before that rule
was marked `literalsMatter`. Its counter-example is now a NON-EMPTY literal, so
the corpus pins the direction it was blind to.
* GUARDS must read the original text. `unless` and `absentNewSql` exist to
recognise context, and blanking erases the very context they look for:
`case-when-no-end` guards on `{{`, and `interval '{{ days }}' day` carries its
Jinja INSIDE a literal, so a blanked guard stopped seeing it and the rule fired
on valid templated SQL. Positive matchers read blanked text; guards do not.
**1. The catalog is dialect-aware.** `Rule.dialects?: string[]`, threaded from the
manifest's `adapter_type` through `detectModelPatterns` into `evaluateCatalog`.
223 of 1,268 findings (17.5%) came from `bq-*`/`rs-*`/`dbx-*` rules on a Trino
project — not merely noisy, but telling the reader the finding concerns a
warehouse they do not run. 30 rules tagged by family. Omitting the field means
"applies everywhere", so no existing rule changes behaviour by omission, and an
UNKNOWN dialect runs everything: a detection failure must never silently suppress
findings.
**2. `hardcoded-env-name` no longer matches a dbt tag.** `tags=['staging',
'billing']` is a LAYER label, not an environment. 46 of 46 findings were the
model's own config tag, and they were 33% of every warning in the review.
**3. `window-no-partition` scans the balanced `OVER ( … )`.** A window spec is
routinely written across three lines, so the per-line test saw `over (` with no
`partition by` beside it and fired: 37 findings, and all 37 windows were
partitioned. This is the THIRD instance of one defect class in this file — after
the CROSS JOIN operand scan and the multi-line comment blanking — a single-line
regex applied to SQL whose meaning spans lines. The comment on the detector says
so, because a fourth is likely.
Cumulative on `altimate review --all --no-ai` over the 215-model project, across
the three commits:
critical 30 -> 0 warning 225 -> 86
total 1,518 -> 952
No rule's count increased.

…nd a review schema-lag lane
- `altimate dbt-impact`: impact of a model change through dbt models,
loaders and served tables. Compiled-SQL diff mode from
`--base-manifest`/`--head-manifest` or an offline compile of each side
(no UNCLASSIFIED on `{% set %}`/var-only Jinja). `--jobs jobs.json` /
`--jobs-from selectors` (resolved with `dbt ls`) enable the
`schema_lag` check; `--live` reads deployed columns.
- `altimate dbt-optimize`: rewrite proposals with proof status, cost-gate
verdict and apply.
- `altimate dbt-factor`: factor shared logic into one model, multi-file
apply.
- `altimate dbt-parity`: before/after row parity for a model.
- Review: `schema_lag` lane (runs when a job map is supplied) and
schema-gap error handling.
- `native/dbt/runner.ts`: `dbtLs`, `dbtCompileOffline`.

… map The lane compared raw Jinja base SQL against a stale compiled head (one `target/` holds at most one side), so it never saw the real change, and `altimate review` had no way to take a job map or a dbt profile, so cross-job lag was always skipped, silently. - Compile base and head on first use (`compileSides`), or take `--base-manifest` / `--head-manifest`; pass the head manifest to the core so `materialized` / `on_schema_change` come from the head DAG. - `--jobs` / `--jobs-from selectors` override config `schemaLag`. - `--dbt-bin` / `--profiles-dir` / `--dbt-target` for `dbt ls` and the compile; the project's `profiles.yml` is used when present. - Job-map read and `dbt ls` failures are printed instead of dropped. SUGGESTION: Escape regex metacharacters in newModelName and validate model names used in file paths
newModelName from engine proposals is interpolated directly into new RegExp(...) here and into path.join(..., ${newModelName}.sql) in buildPatchPlan / buildFactorPlan. Escaping newModelName (or validating /^[A-Za-z0-9_]+$/ up front) avoids accidental regex metacharacter matching or path traversal if a proposal name contains unexpected characters.

isSingleRowCte treats window aggregates as row-collapsing aggregates.
The aggregate regex matches anywhere in the body. That includes sum(x) over (...) and aggregates inside nested subqueries. select id, sum(amt) over (partition by id) as s from t returns one row per row of t, but this function treats it as provably single-row. A CROSS JOIN to that CTE is therefore suppressed silently. The docstring promises a guarantee "of the SQL standard, not heuristics", so this is a false negative on a real cartesian product.
Reject bodies that contain a window. Also require the aggregate to appear at the top level.

A pure directory move can produce a critical lineage_breakage:external-sink finding.
lineageImpactEvidence asks dbtImpact for kind: "drop" on every renamed file. That includes renames that keep the model name. lineageBreakageLane (Lines 394-396) treats a same-name rename as "not a break", because dbt resolves ref() by name.
Such a move skips the first branch. If a loader or served table reads the model, the analyzer reports it as BREAKING for a drop. The new branch at Lines 429-446 then emits a critical finding. lineage_breakage is in blockOn, so moving models/a/x.sql to models/b/x.sql returns REQUEST_CHANGES in gate mode.
Request drop evidence only when the model is actually removed.

The schema-lag lane can still compare a compiled side with a raw side.
The comment says compiled sides are preferred so that the two sides do not mix. However, each side falls back to engineOldSql or engineNewSql on its own. Suppose findModel returns compiled_code for the head manifest only. This happens when the base compile failed, which compileSides reports only as a note. The lane then sends raw Jinja as the base and compiled SQL as the head to schemaLag, together with both manifests. That is the mismatch this block is meant to prevent.
Use the compiled pair only when both sides resolve.

An unknown dialect reaches this gate as "snowflake", so the "unknown dialect runs every rule" rule does not hold.
The comments here and in RuleInput.dialect say an undetected dialect leaves dialect undefined. run.ts (Line 425) instead sets config.dialect = (await detectDialect(manifestAbs)) ?? "snowflake". orchestrate.ts passes that value to detectModelPatterns. Consider a run with no manifest or no adapter_type, which is the lint-only case. The new gate then drops every bigquery, redshift and databricks rule, which is the silent suppression the comment rules out.
Pass the detected dialect without the Snowflake default to the catalog. For example, keep detectedDialect in run.ts and forward it as a separate catalogDialect input. Another option is to make detectModelPatterns receive undefined when config.dialect was not set explicitly and was not detected.

Make --fail-on fail when changed models are unclassified.
changesForFile and changesFromManifests report unclassifiable models so that they are not treated as safe. The exit gate only reads worst, and worst is computed from results. It ignores unclassified. A modified model that dbt could not compile, and that uses Jinja beyond ref/source/config, is printed as UNCLASSIFIED. With --fail-on breaking or --fail-on risky, CI still exits 0. The command did not analyse that change, so the gate passes without evidence.

Restore the production schema.inspect handler in afterEach.
Dispatcher.register overwrites the shared handler map. The test replaces the production schema.inspect handler, while the current afterEach only restores console, process, and temporary-directory state. afterAll(() => registerAll()) restores only altimate_core.* handlers. A later test using the same dispatcher instance can therefore receive the fake producer columns.
Add a scoped handler snapshot or a production registration function, then restore schema.inspect in afterEach. Do not use Dispatcher.reset() alone because it removes all registered handlers.

Update the test’s afterEach cleanup to restore the production schema.inspect
handler replaced by Dispatcher.register, using a scoped handler snapshot or the
production registration function; preserve the other registered handlers rather
than resetting the dispatcher.

Build the relation before using describe.
dbt compile refreshes the manifest but does not materialize the edited model. If the fallback uses describe <relation>, it can inspect the old relation and report a false match. Run dbt build or dbt run before describing the relation, or use dbt show to inspect the current model query.

Update the dbt command sequence in the schema verification instructions so the
fallback cannot describe a stale relation: use dbt build or dbt run to

the current model query. Keep dbt compile only for refreshing the manifest.

P1: The preflight uses dbt parse, which produces a manifest without compiled_code. The engine's AST and equivalence lanes then return nothing for those models, so the verdict looks clean when it was not checked.
