What does this PR do?

There are two ways to get altimate-code's data tools into another agent today, and both are poor fits:

  • The Claude Code plugin hands the whole task to altimate-code run. That pays for a second model and replaces the client's own reasoning loop.
  • The tools themselves can only be used inside an altimate-code session. altimate-code is an MCP client only.

This PR adds altimate-code mcp serve, a stdio MCP server. Any MCP client, such as Claude Code, can call the data tools directly while its own model does the reasoning. The server never calls a model, so an MCP client's subscription covers the whole LLM cost.

What it exposes: five data tools, reusing the existing implementations, each with a short description:

  • warehouse_list
  • schema_inspect
  • sql_execute
  • sql_check
  • sql_materialize

Added since the first revision:

  • answer_commit (MCP only). The client's model commits its final answer through this tool. It runs the same requested-item and number-provenance checks as the native analyst, and returns a FINAL ANSWER: line for the model to reply with. It returns plain text only: Claude Code shows structuredContent to the model in place of the text, and the model then rewrote the answer as prose.
  • Server instructions: the analyst method, 723 characters, sent in the initialize response.
  • analyze prompt: interactive clients show it as a slash command.
  • Reading question (elicitation): when a commit lists two readings and the client supports elicitation, the server asks once which reading the user meant. If the user picks the other reading, the commit is rejected and the model recomputes under it. The question times out after 20 s and follows the tool call's abort signal, so a client that never answers cannot stall the commit. Decline, cancel and timeout all keep the commit accepted.
  • resource_link: when sql_execute spills a large result to a file, the result also carries a link to that file.

Behaviour:

  • Read-only by default. Writes request the sql_execute_write permission, which the server denies unless it was started with --allow-write. Reads are auto-allowed. sql_materialize still requires a read-only source query and writes only to the server session's temporary scratch warehouse, which is removed on exit.
  • Clean results. A local session is bound at start-up, so results no longer carry the "Not routed through the bound workspace" notice.
  • Cancellation. An MCP request's abort is forwarded into the tool call.
  • Client-neutral hints. Spill-file hints say "open this path with any file reader" instead of naming the agent-only read tool. This applies only on the MCP path, through a context flag, so normal agent output is unchanged.
  • Connections. --connections <file> points at a connections file; without it, the server uses normal connection discovery.
  • Clean protocol. stdout carries only MCP protocol messages; logs go to stderr. The CLI's start-up middleware (banner, telemetry, agent init) is skipped for mcp serve only. Cold start is about 1.5 s.

Shared files touched:

File Change
cli/cmd/mcp.ts new serve subcommand (marked)
index.ts middleware skip for mcp serve only (marked)
workspace/precedence.ts bindLocalSession / releaseLocalSession helpers
sql-execute.ts, sql-result-format.ts the mcpClient hint flag

Normal agent behaviour is unchanged.

Docs: a new "Use Altimate Code tools from another MCP client" section in docs/docs/configure/mcp-servers.md.

How did you verify your code works?

  • Unit and integration: bun test on test/altimate/mcp-server plus every suite that references the shared files touched: 2,696 pass, 0 fail. The MCP tests run a real in-process MCP client and a stdio client against a temporary database. They:
    • list the 5 tools;
    • run warehouse_list, schema_inspect and sql_execute;
    • check a mutating sql_execute is refused by default and allowed with --allow-write;
    • check the routing notice is absent;
    • check cancellation works.
  • Typecheck and markers: bun run typecheck is clean, and the marker check script/upstream/analyze.ts --markers --base main --strict passes.
  • End to end with the real Claude Code CLI (2.1.302, Sonnet):
    • Setup: claude -p with --mcp-config pointing at altimate-code mcp serve from this branch, --strict-mcp-config, and Bash disallowed. The database was a 60-row SQLite orders table.
    • The server reported connected.
    • Claude called warehouse_list, schema_inspect and sql_execute, and answered correctly: 30 paid orders totalling 12,555, checked by hand.
    • A requested DELETE was refused with Permission denied: sql_execute_write. Restart with --allow-write to enable writes.
    • Cost: $0.09.
  • Not run: Postgres, Snowflake and other remote warehouses through the MCP path. They reuse the same tool implementations and connection registry.

Note

Medium Risk
New SQL execution surface over MCP with read-only defaults and permission gating, but it reuses core query paths and misconfiguration or --allow-write could allow mutations against configured warehouses.

Overview
Adds altimate-code mcp serve, a stdio MCP server so external MCP clients can call Altimate’s five warehouse tools (warehouse_list, schema_inspect, sql_execute, sql_check, sql_materialize) without starting an agent or calling a model. A thin adapter wires the existing tool implementations with a local session, MCP-specific permissions, and client-neutral truncation/spill hints.

Safety and behavior: Source SQL writes are denied unless --allow-write; otherwise reads propagate forceReadOnly through dispatch so Postgres/SQLite/DuckDB get database-level protection, with stderr/warehouse_list caveats for classification-only engines. Optional --connections loads an isolated connections file via Registry.loadFile. Stdio keeps protocol on stdout; CLI middleware (telemetry/heap) is skipped for mcp serve. Scratch materialization and private spill directories are torn down on shutdown; MCP abort signals cancel in-flight queries.

Supporting changes: Truncate.makeLayer for per-server output dirs; docs for client setup; CI runs MCP server tests in a separate process with real drivers (ALTIMATE_MCP_E2E).

Summary by cubic

Adds altimate-code mcp serve, a stdio MCP server that exposes altimate-code's data tools to MCP clients without calling a model, so the client's own model does the reasoning and its subscription covers LLM cost.

  • Exposes exactly warehouse_list, schema_inspect, sql_execute, sql_check, sql_materialize, and answer_commit, reusing existing implementations. schema_inspect without a table lists schemas with table counts (capped at 200) via one bounded catalog aggregate, then up to 500 tables per schema through pushed-down catalog queries; MongoDB uses scalar dbStats counts and a bounded listCollections cursor. Row counts are local SQLite/DuckDB only (at most 50 tables under a 3-second budget); remote engines show catalog estimates, never COUNT(*).
  • warehouse_list adds local tables with columns and a one-row sample (SQLite and local DuckDB base tables only), bounded by table budgets and a 4-second deadline; remote connections run no queries.
  • sql_execute accepts up to 8 read-only queries per call as one labeled block each with a shared byte/line budget and full_text_columns forwarded per query; a failing item does not stop the rest. A result too large to show inline becomes a scratch table result_N (typed like sql_materialize, sequential names) with a 10-row preview and a SELECT ... FROM result_N hint; the full rows spill to a CSV file with a single header row (NULL empty, "" kept), described as a CSV copy since CSV text cannot preserve binary, JSON, or base64: values byte-for-byte.
  • answer_commit requires every requested item to map to its own field (at most two rejections per turn) and, once per commit, rejects a fields result with fewer fields than the request asks for; an unchanged recommit is accepted. MCP commits skip the number-provenance warning, which the server cannot verify for numbers computed in the client; native sessions keep it. Calls without asked behave as before. The user's question is passed verbatim as an MCP-only request argument, stripped before parsing; the compact description tells clients not to collapse a compound request into one field ('the repository and the most copied file' needs two). Complete commits (a rows commit, or a fields commit covering every requested item) return the basis as context above an answer-only FINAL ANSWER: <text> line without structured content; under-asked commits keep the earlier rendering. When a commit records two possible readings it asks once per session which reading was meant, with a 20-second timeout (elicitTimeoutMs) that follows the tool call's signal so a silent client cannot stall the commit; declining, an unsupporting client, or a timeout leaves the commit accepted.
  • Read-only by default; writes need --allow-write. Without it, source queries request database-enforced read-only on Postgres, SQLite, and DuckDB; other engines are classification-only, so the server warns at startup and in warehouse_list to use a read-only database user. sql_materialize reads the source read-only and writes only to a session-local scratch warehouse removed on exit.
  • Spill output goes to a private per-process directory deleted on close; the original file stays as a copy and fallback, with client-neutral hints (no agent-only read or lineage_check text) and a resource_link beside the result. Tool output drops rule separator lines, sql_materialize receipts omit the echoed SQL, and usage hints are shown once per session.
  • Forwards MCP cancellation to tool calls, binds a local session so results lack the routing notice, and sends analyst-method instructions in the initialize response, including an analyze prompt for interactive clients. Advertised tool schemas are compacted for the client (filler unions collapsed, parser-enforced keys dropped) while keeping sql_check.join allowed values, the query_from rule, and the answer_commit compound-request guidance, without changing parsing. Writes only MCP frames to stdout with logs on stderr; --print-logs/--log-level apply and telemetry startup is skipped.
  • --connections <file> is the sole source of connections and rejects the reserved scratch name; otherwise normal discovery applies.
  • The stdio server is driven over raw JSON-RPC in tests so MCP SDK client mocks cannot leak in.
  • The analyst requests high reasoning effort on adaptive-thinking models when neither the request nor agent config chooses one; ALTIMATE_ANALYST_EFFORT overrides it or turns it off.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a standalone MCP server that gives MCP clients access to five Altimate tools for warehouse discovery, schema inspection, SQL execution, SQL checks, and materialization.
    • Supports an optional connections file. SQL writes are disabled by default; enabling them remains subject to safety checks. Materialization uses a read-only source query and a temporary scratch destination.
    • Large results can be opened from a local file path, with temporary output cleaned up when the client closes.
  • Documentation
    • Added setup instructions, connection-source details, tool descriptions, write-permission guidance, output limits, and notes on read-only enforcement.

Update: answer_commit over MCP (stacked on #native commit 15d2766)

This branch now merges 15d2766115 (the native feat/analyst-commit-slots-effort commit, no PR of its own) so the server reuses answer-commit-checks.ts instead of a copy. Until that commit lands on main, this PR's diff includes it; the MCP-specific change is the last two commits.

  • New sixth tool answer_commit: asked-item coverage (at most two rejections per turn), one-time number-provenance warning, canonical FINAL ANSWER: <text> result. The adapter keeps session history (tool outputs and rejections) in the shape the shared checks read, and starts a new turn after an accepted commit.
  • The 400-character basis limit is not enforced over MCP: longer text is trimmed to 400 characters instead of rejected. The native tool is unchanged.
  • Server instructions step 7 now points at answer_commit.
  • Help snapshot updated for mcp serve.

Tests: ALTIMATE_MCP_E2E=1 bun test test/altimate/mcp-server 33 pass, 0 fail ("Ran 33 tests across 2 files"); typecheck clean; marker check ok. Full package run: 20221 tests, 19335 pass, 18 fail, 790 skip, 78 todo; after the snapshot fix, the remaining failures (mcp.headers, HttpApi status/experimental, --time-budget run tests, and a few environment-dependent suites) fail identically on the native branch without these commits. Codex read-only review of the MCP diff: no P0/P1.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Add `altimate-code mcp serve`, a stdio MCP server that lets any MCP client
(e.g. Claude Code) call altimate-code's data tools directly while the client's
own model does the reasoning. The server never calls a model.

- Exposes `warehouse_list`, `schema_inspect`, `sql_execute`, `sql_check` and
`sql_materialize`, reusing the existing implementations with short tool
  descriptions.
- Read-only by default: the `sql_execute_write` permission is denied unless
`--allow-write` is passed; reads are auto-allowed.
- Binds a local session at start-up so results do not carry the
  workspace-routing notice; forwards MCP cancellation to tool calls;
  `sql_materialize` keeps a session-local scratch warehouse.
- Spill hints tell MCP clients to open the spill path with any file reader
instead of naming the agent-only `read` tool.
- `--connections <file>` or normal connection discovery; stdout carries only
MCP protocol messages; no telemetry start-up.

📝 Walkthrough

Adds a standalone stdio MCP server for five Altimate tools. The CLI accepts an optional connections file and disables SQL writes by default. The server handles tool calls, applies read-only controls, and closes active work and local resources during shutdown.

Changes: Altimate MCP server

Layer / File(s) Summary
Connection and query controls
packages/opencode/src/altimate/native/connections/*, packages/opencode/src/altimate/native/query-execution.ts, packages/opencode/src/altimate/tools/*
The server can load and validate an explicit connections file. MCP context can force read-only execution through SQL, schema, and materialization tools. Warehouse listings include caveats for connection types without database-enforced read-only protection.
MCP adapter and server lifecycle
packages/opencode/src/altimate/mcp-server/*, packages/opencode/src/altimate/workspace/precedence.ts, packages/opencode/src/tool/truncate.ts, packages/opencode/src/altimate/tools/sql-result-format.ts
The adapter creates a local session for five tools, applies write permissions, and tracks active calls. Output limits and spill hints can be configured for MCP. Server shutdown aborts active calls and releases session and temporary output resources.
CLI integration and validation
packages/opencode/src/cli/cmd/mcp.ts, packages/opencode/src/index.ts, docs/docs/configure/mcp-servers.md, packages/opencode/test/altimate/mcp-server/*, .github/workflows/ci.yml
The CLI registers mcp serve with optional connection and write settings. Middleware skips remaining startup work for that command. Documentation and integration tests cover configuration, tool behavior, write controls, output handling, and shutdown.

- Without `--allow-write`, every source query from the MCP tools requests
database-enforced read-only where the engine supports it (Postgres read-only
transaction, SQLite `query_only`, DuckDB read-only open). Engines without
  database-level read-only are still served, but `warehouse_list`, a stderr
notice at start-up and the docs say plainly that stored functions with side
effects are not blocked and a read-only database user is recommended.
- Spill output goes to a private per-process directory that is removed when
the server closes, through the shared truncation service (user output
  limits and failure wording preserved).
- MCP-facing text names only the exposed tools: no `lineage_check` tip from
  `schema_inspect`, and client-neutral `full_text_columns` guidance.
- `--connections` uses the registry's path resolution and rejects the
reserved `scratch` name at start-up; docs state the file replaces
  discovery. `--print-logs`/`--log-level` now apply to `mcp serve`.
- Tests: in-process MCP server tests need real drivers, so they run in a
dedicated CI step (`ALTIMATE_MCP_E2E=1`); the allow-write read-back and
middleware-skip regressions now fail when the behaviour regresses.

Run the MCP E2E tests for MCP changes.

The driver-e2e job runs only when needs.changes.outputs.drivers == 'true'. The drivers filter does not include the MCP server source or test paths. A change limited to those paths can skip the only step that sets ALTIMATE_MCP_E2E=1, so the MCP-specific tests remain skipped.

Add the MCP paths to the drivers filter, or move this step to a job that runs for packages/opencode changes.

WARNING: driver-e2e path filters omit MCP server paths, so PRs touching only mcp-server skip server.test.ts entirely

server.test.ts gates all 15 tests on ALTIMATE_MCP_E2E === "1" (test/altimate/mcp-server/server.test.ts:18), so the main typescript job skips them. The driver-e2e job only runs when needs.changes.outputs.drivers == 'true', and the drivers path filter (ci.yml:89-112) does not include packages/opencode/src/altimate/mcp-server/** or packages/opencode/test/altimate/mcp-server/**. As noted at ci.yml:97-100 for duckdb-open-e2e.test.ts, add those paths to the drivers filter so PRs modifying only MCP server files still run server.test.ts.

WARNING: Nested altimate_change markers inside makeLayer break flat marker parsers in bridge-merge.ts and analyze.ts

Opening // altimate_change start on line 57 and closing on line 164 wraps two existing marker blocks (lines 72–92 and lines 113–149). While computeMarkedLines tracks nesting depth, extractMarkerBlocks in script/upstream/bridge-merge.ts:122-161 and findMarkers in script/upstream/analyze.ts:503-520 use a flat boolean state—pairing line 57's start with line 92's inner end and leaving lines 93–112 and 150–164 unmarked during bridge merges. Remove the inner altimate_change start/end markers (keeping the upstream_fix: comment text) so the block is not nested.

WARNING: outputLimits ignores documented ALTIMATE_CLI_* env aliases and reverses .json vs .jsonc precedence

Config.Service (src/config/config.ts:545-601, src/config/paths.ts:54-56) resolves Flag.OPENCODE_CONFIG, Flag.OPENCODE_DISABLE_PROJECT_CONFIG, Flag.OPENCODE_CONFIG_DIR, and env("OPENCODE_CONFIG_CONTENT") (which read ALTIMATE_CLI_CONFIG* first), and loads ["altimate-code.json", "altimate-code.jsonc", "opencode.json", "opencode.jsonc"] so .jsonc overrides .json in the same directory. Here, reading process.env.OPENCODE_* directly ignores ALTIMATE_CLI_* variables, and lines 35 and 42 load .jsonc before .json so .json overwrites .jsonc. Additionally, readFile on line 18 only catches ENOENT, so an unreadable ancestor directory (EACCES/EPERM) or directory collision (EISDIR/ENOTDIR) while walking up to / will throw and abort server startup.

P3: Within one directory, this order gives altimate-code.json precedence over opencode.jsonc, the reverse of the agent loader. Use the same file order as config.ts so the same config resolves to the same tool_output values in both paths.

…ts on MCP-only changes

- `schema_inspect` without `table` (missing or empty) lists the
warehouse's tables/collections with schema and type, plus row counts
where cheap and safe (local SQLite/DuckDB, catalog statistics), capped at
500 entries. The with-`table` path is unchanged. Goes through the same
dispatcher, permission and precedence checks and the MCP read-only
  enforcement.
- CI: the driver-e2e path filter now includes the MCP server and
schema tool paths, so the dedicated MCP test step runs for MCP-only PRs.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- No `table` and no `schema_name`: one catalog aggregate (`GROUP BY table_schema`, `sqlite_master`, BigQuery `INFORMATION_SCHEMA`) returns schemas with table counts, capped at 200; falls back to `listSchemas()` without counts
- `schema_name` only: catalog query ordered by name with `LIMIT 501` pushed down; `connector.listTables` is used only for drivers without catalog SQL
- MongoDB: `dbStats` collection counts and a `listCollections` cursor that stops at 501
- Row counts: local SQLite/DuckDB only, at most 50 tables under a ~3 s budget, rest marked "not counted"; remote engines show catalog estimates only, never `COUNT(*)`
- Tests: 2,000,000-table fake catalog, schema aggregate, slow-count budget, real SQLite/DuckDB, MongoDB cap

Claude Code includes MCP server instructions in the model context, so the
method (profile before choosing keys, compute in the database, materialize
for cross-connection joins, sql_check, report only requested values) now
reaches the model without relying on a skill.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…`; default analyst effort to high

- `answer_commit` takes an optional `asked` list (the requested items, in
order). With more than one item, every item must map to its own non-empty
field or `rows` column; otherwise the call is rejected with the missing
items named. At most two such rejections per user turn, then accepted.
Filler values (`[]`, `""`, `null`) are ignored; calls without `asked`
  behave as before.
- Committed numbers are compared with numbers in this session's earlier tool
output and the user's request, allowing rounding, truncation and x100 / /100
  conversions. An unsourced number gets one warning-style rejection per turn;
the next commit is accepted. Skipped when no SQL tool has produced output
and for integers up to 10.
- Rejection counts come from the turn's `answer_commit` error parts in
`Tool.Context.messages`, so no extra session state is kept.
- `readings` description and the analyst prompt ask for one entry naming the
chosen and rejected reading when the wording is ambiguous; readings stay in
  metadata only.
- The analyst requests `high` reasoning effort (adaptive thinking, summarized
display) on adaptive-thinking models when no variant or agent effort option
is set. `ALTIMATE_ANALYST_EFFORT` selects another level or `off`. The
run-budget effort downgrade still applies afterwards.

…ng rejections, bind supplied definitions

- `basis` over the bound is trimmed with an ellipsis instead of rejecting the whole commit (saves a retry turn)
- add a once-per-turn reading check when `readings.decided_by` rejects an alternative only because it returns few or trivial rows
- analyst prompt and tool description: a definition or policy in the request is binding, items listed alongside the entity are asked, and rules are tested per line in SQL

…nce checks

Merge the native answer_commit checks (15d2766) and expose the tool over MCP.
The server records tool output and rejections as turn history so the same check
code runs unchanged; an over-long basis is trimmed instead of rejected, and an
accepted commit returns canonical FINAL ANSWER text.

A definition or policy in the request binds the metric, date column, threshold and eligibility it defines, but the requested entity still comes from the object the metric is about.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ompt

It pushed the analyst toward the eligibility object's owner when the metric belongs to another object. Keep only the rule against rejecting a reading for returning few rows.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The text result keeps the preview, row count and saved-file path; a resource_link
to the file is added beside it.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The text result remains the fallback.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…a elicitation

- `analyze` prompt carries the analyst method (slash command in interactive clients).
- `answer_commit` asks once per session which reading was meant, only when the
commit records two readings and the client supports elicitation. Decline, cancel
or no elicitation support leaves the commit accepted (headless clients cancel).

Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…nt cannot stall the commit

`elicitInput` had no deadline and ignored the tool call's abort signal, so a client that
advertises elicitation but never answers (common headless) held `answer_commit` until the
client's tool-call timeout and the accepted answer never arrived. The question now times out
after 20s (configurable via `elicitTimeoutMs`) and follows the tool call's signal; any timeout
or abort keeps the commit accepted. Adds a regression test with a client that never responds.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
… structured output

Claude Code shows the model `structuredContent` in place of the text content, so after
an accepted commit the model saw `{"answer":"..."}` instead of `FINAL ANSWER: ...` and
went on to restate the answer in prose, which can drop requested items. Drops the
`outputSchema` and `structuredContent` added for `answer_commit`; the text result is
unchanged. The test now asserts that neither is returned.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ks cannot leak in

CI runs every test file in one Bun process. `test/mcp/*.test.ts` replace
`@modelcontextprotocol/sdk/client/index.js` with a mock that is never
restored, so `stdio.test.ts` got a no-op client whose `listTools()` returns
no tools. The test now spawns the server with `Bun.spawn` and speaks
newline-delimited JSON-RPC itself; cases and assertions are unchanged.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
`answer_commit` over MCP now returns the basis as context above an
answer-only FINAL ANSWER line (rendered as `answer_only` would), so a
client that copies the FINAL ANSWER text never includes the explanation.
Callers that already set `answer_only` get the answer line alone.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
… one-time requested-items check

- `answer_commit` over MCP takes the user's question verbatim as an MCP-only `request` argument (the server never sees the user message); the adapter strips it before the strict parser.
- A one-time conjunction check rejects a `fields` commit whose field count is below the number of items the request asks for ("the X and its Y"); an unchanged recommit is accepted.
- The FINAL ANSWER line drops the basis (basis rendered above it) only for a complete commit: a `rows` commit, or a `fields` commit covering every requested item. Under-asked commits keep the previous rendering, so a second item named only in the basis is not lost.
- Tests: final-answer rendering branches, MCP server conjunction path, detector unit tests.

…les in `warehouse_list`

- `sql_execute` `queries`: up to 8 read-only queries per call, one labeled block each; a failing item does not stop the rest; one shared byte/line budget.
- MCP `warehouse_list` adds local tables with columns and a one-row sample (SQLite/local DuckDB base tables), bounded by table budgets and a 4 s deadline; remote connections run no queries.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ext_columns` to batched queries

Review follow-ups for the batch and discovery commit.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Over MCP the server sees only its own tool output, so the one-time number-provenance rejection fired on correct values computed in the client's shell or code. MCP commits now skip it; the requested-items, reading and one-time conjunction checks and the answer-only FINAL ANSWER rendering are unchanged. Native sessions keep the number check.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Tool definitions are re-sent with every model request. The adapter now collapses optional-property filler unions, drops keys the parsers already enforce and uses short property descriptions; parsing is unchanged. Declarations total 5,757 chars (was 12,012), `answer_commit` 1,988 (was 5,755), instructions 681 (was 723).

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…le in the compact schema

Review follow-up: the short descriptions dropped the only allowed-value guidance for `join` and the requirement that `query_from` needs a top-level `warehouse`.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ow a short preview

Over MCP a result too large to show inline now becomes scratch table `result_N` (typed like `sql_materialize`, sequential names), with a 10-row preview, 160-byte cells and a `SELECT ... FROM result_N` hint instead of a file to read whole. The file stays as a copy and the fallback. Native output is unchanged.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…per session

- Spill files are CSV with one header row (NULL empty, "" kept), named result-N.csv in the private dir.
- No `---|---` rule lines in sql_execute, schema_inspect, warehouse_list.
- sql_materialize receipt omits the echoed SQL; usage hints appear once per session.
- A cancelled spill store propagates. Native output unchanged.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Review follow-up: CSV text cannot tell a `base64:` string from bytes or JSON text from an object, so the hint now says "CSV copy". The scratch table stays the typed source.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…mmit` description

The compact description dropped the guidance and worked example for requests that name an entity and a related item, and clients then committed a single field. Restore it in short form (+221 chars): never collapse a compound request into one field ('the repository and the most copied file' needs two), and an item that only selects the answer is not asked.

Tests: `server.test.ts` (ALTIMATE_MCP_E2E=1) asserts the rule is advertised; size caps raised to 2,250 (`answer_commit`) and 6,250 (all tools).
