feat(stream): Add implementation of Java 8 Stream - #12
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
This change adds generic collection interfaces and implementations, a lazy stream API with intermediate and terminal operations, parallel collection, and collectors. It also adds stream documentation, removes the MapEntry-specific configuration path, adds an internal string helper, and updates the Codecov test command.
Changes: Collections and Streams
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Collection contracts and nil handling pkg/core/collection.go, internal/utils/is_nil.go, internal/utils/is_nil_test.go
Adds generic collection, list, and set interfaces. Adds IsNil for nil interfaces, pointers, maps, and slices.
Abstract list and set behavior pkg/util/internal/abstract_list.go, pkg/util/internal/abstract_set.go, pkg/util/internal/*_test.go
Adds slice-backed list and map-backed set operations, iteration, equality, JSON, and SQL support, with tests for normal, empty, and invalid inputs.
ArrayList and HashSet pkg/util/array_list.go, pkg/util/hash_set.go, pkg/util/*_list_test.go, pkg/util/hash_set_test.go
Adds public list and set wrappers with constructors, delegated operations, streams, JSON, and SQL methods.
Stream sources and lifecycle pkg/util/stream/stream.go, pkg/util/stream/stream_test.go, pkg/util/stream/stream_test_helpers_test.go, pkg/util/stream/stream_example_test.go, docs/content/docs/5-language-helpers/3-streams.md, docs/content/docs/5-language-helpers/_index.md
Adds stream constructors, range and concatenation behavior, parallel-mode controls, single-use checks, close handlers, and examples.
Terminal and parallel operations pkg/util/stream/terminal.go, pkg/util/stream/terminal_test.go, pkg/util/stream/parallel_test.go, pkg/util/stream/stream_example_test.go, pkg/util/stream/stream_suite_test.go, docs/content/docs/5-language-helpers/3-streams.md
Adds traversal, matching, finding, reductions, min/max, parallel operations, and tests for results, ordering, early termination, and panic propagation.
Collectors and summary statistics pkg/util/stream/collector.go, pkg/util/stream/statistics.go, pkg/util/stream/collector_test.go, pkg/util/stream/collector_example_test.go, docs/content/docs/5-language-helpers/3-streams.md
Adds collector factories and adapters, grouping and partitioning, map collection, summary statistics, examples, and tests.
Adds the core Map interface and removes the old util Map and MapEntry APIs. Struct elements in configuration slices now receive their element maps directly; the prior MapEntry special case and test are removed.
Adds UTF-8-aware Uncapitalize and uses it to derive the default Beam qualifier.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 6ce50
The PR is mergeable with a documentation correction: the parallel Collect guide should accurately describe accumulator ownership and which pipeline stages run in workers, so custom collector authors can rely on the right contract.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 6ce50
The changes primarily affect library contracts and application-owned resources. One failure-containment concern remains: a panicking stream cleanup hook prevents later cleanup hooks from running. Compatibility also changes for users of the removed utility APIs. No new privileged or remotely exploitable path was established in the inspected code.
Retained concerns
Medium · reliability · observed: The new stream cleanup protocol does not isolate failures between resource owners. Close marks the stream closed before invoking its hooks sequentially. If one hook panics, later hooks—including hooks inherited from another concatenated input—are skipped, and calling Close again on that stream cannot resume cleanup. This weakens failure containment for resources whose release depends on those hooks; no security-sensitive resource consumer was established.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The retained cleanup concern affects application-owned resources attached to a stream, including resources belonging to separate concatenated inputs. Broader tenant, service, credential, or data-store exposure depends on downstream application use and was not established by the inspected source.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The stream API accepts application-supplied iterators, suppliers, and callbacks and invokes them as ordinary in-process Go functions, including on worker goroutines. These extension points are not sandbox or credential-isolation boundaries.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Parallel ForEach contains worker panics by recording the first panic and draining queued input; the producer closes its internal channel before waiting for workers. This supports traversal-failure containment but does not protect the subsequent cleanup-hook dispatch from a hook panic.
observed — Close invokes hooks without waiting for active traversal or signaling cancellation. FromChan waits on its producer-controlled channel. Consequently, idempotent Close does not itself provide an active-traversal cancellation or completion guarantee.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Make cleanup dispatch failure-isolated so every registered hook is attempted before propagating a recorded panic. Define whether concurrent Close merely runs hooks or also guarantees traversal completion, and distinguish stream lifecycle synchronization from synchronization of mutable collection sources.

Explanation
The title "feat(stream): Add implementation of Java 8 Stream" matches the main change. The changeset adds a Go pkg/util/stream package modeled on Java 8 Streams, including stream construction, intermediate and terminal operations, collectors, and parallel execution. The PR objectives also name the Java 8 Stream port as a primary goal. The title omits the List and Set collection types added in the same changeset, which is an acceptable omission for a concise title.

Clear reslices to [:0] and RemoveAt shifts elements left. Neither call zeroes the vacated slots. For a pointer, interface, map, or slice element type, the backing array keeps references to removed values. The garbage collector cannot free them until a later Add overwrites the slot. A long-lived list that is cleared often can retain large objects.
slices.Delete zeroes the tail slots. clear zeroes the slots before Clear reslices.

- Around line 148-157: Update the matching example so each terminal
operation—AnyMatch, AllMatch, and NoneMatch—uses its own StreamOf instance
instead of reusing the consumed stream s.
- Line 256: Update the “Combining Partial Results” description for parallel
Collect to state that encounter order is not preserved; remove the claim that
merging is deterministic while retaining the explanation of Collector.Combiner
and Collector.Finisher.

- Around line 441-452: Update the collectors returned by GroupingBy and
PartitioningBy so their Combiner is nil whenever downstream.Combiner is nil;
otherwise preserve the existing merge behavior. This allows Collect to select
its sequential fallback for downstream collectors without a combiner.
Review comments at @pkg/util/stream/intermediate.go:
- Line 110: Update the comparability check in Distinct to use
reflect.Value.Comparable instead of reflect.Type.Comparable, so values with
dynamically uncomparable fields use the DeepEqual fallback rather than panicking
during map insertion.
Review comments at @pkg/util/stream/statistics.go:
- Around line 28-37: Update IntSummaryStatistics.Accept and
Float64SummaryStatistics.Accept to initialize Min and Max to the accepted value
when Count is zero, before updating the count, sum, and extrema. Preserve the
existing aggregation behavior for non-empty statistics.
Review comments at @pkg/util/stream/stream.go:
- Line 260: Update `Stream.Close()` to mark the stream as consumed by storing
true in `consumed` when it is non-nil, before the existing close logic. Preserve
the current closed-state handling.
Review comments at @pkg/util/stream/terminal.go:
- Around line 25-29: Update the parallel worker flow in the terminal operation
around wg.Go so callback panics are captured and the first panic is rethrown in
the calling goroutine after wg.Wait(); keep draining the channel after a worker
recovers. Also defer closing the producer and batch channels so they close if
this.seq panics.

A list with 500 entries can pass these assertions while it duplicates an unchecked value and omits another. Check that res contains every integer from 1 through 500. The existing size assertion will then also rule out duplicates.

Test concurrent execution, not only the callback count.
goroutines records x%16, not goroutine identity, and the test never checks the map. The count also reaches 1000 if ForEach runs sequentially. Use a synchronization barrier in the callback to confirm that two callbacks can run at the same time.

Review comments at @pkg/util/internal/abstract_list.go:
- Around line 236-246: Update AbstractList.Equals to use isNil for nil operands,
then require the collection to satisfy List[T] before comparing sizes and
iterating over its sequence. Keep returning false for non-list operands,
including sets, and add a test in abstract_list_test.go asserting that an
AbstractList does not equal an AbstractSet with the same elements.
- Around line 127-129: Update ContainsAll, AddAll, RemoveAll, and RetainAll to
use isNil for checking collection operands, so typed-nil values follow the same
handling as nil; add a regression test for a typed-nil list operand.
Review comments at @pkg/util/stream/stream.go:
- Line 251: Update Stream.OnClose to wrap each non-nil handler with
sync.OnceFunc before storing it, so copied handler slices across derived streams
share a single execution guard; keep per-stage closed flags unchanged. Add a
test that closes both a source stream and a derived stream and verifies the
handler runs once.

Set[T] accepts any Collection[T], including lists.
Set[T] adds no methods to Collection[T]. Every List[T] therefore satisfies Set[T]. var s Set[int] = NewArrayList(1, 1) compiles and gives a set with duplicates.
This hole is why AbstractSet.Equals needs the runtime c.(List[T]) rejection. It also lets callers pass a list to any API that takes a Set.
Add a marker method that only sets implement. Remove the runtime list check after that.

Preserve the removed public methods.
Existing calls to ValueType() and SetAnyValue() no longer compile. Keep them as deprecated wrappers around Type() and the dynamic setter so existing clients can upgrade. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

zero value works as an empty list, including through Size, Add, and Seq; update
NewArrayList and NewArrayListWithCapacity to initialize the embedded value, and
remove obsolete nil-embedded-list checks from methods that handle this state.
Review comments at @pkg/util/hash_set.go:
- Around line 16-18: Change HashSet to embed AbstractSet[T] by value so its zero
value can use promoted methods; lazily initialize the elements map before writes
in AbstractSet.Add, AbstractSet.AddAll, Scan, and UnmarshalJSON.
Review comments at @pkg/util/stream/terminal.go:
- Around line 30-37: Update the panic recovery handlers in the parallel stream
operations to keep draining their input channels after setting the panic state,
so blocked producers can stop and close the channels. Apply this to the handler
shown and the corresponding handlers in AnyMatch, AllMatch, and Collect,
draining Collect’s batch channel.

- Around line 440-441: Update the parallel Collect description and the repeated
worker-accumulator wording to state that Stream.Collect creates a fresh
accumulator via Collector.Supplier for each 64-element batch, stores results by
batch index, and combines them in encounter order via Collector.Combiner.
Clarify that upstream stages such as Map, Filter, and FlatMapSlice run
sequentially on the producing goroutine; only accumulation runs on workers, so
Recipe 1 tokenization is not parallel. State that Supplier must return a fresh
accumulator on each call and Combiner must be associative.

Introduce a functional Streams API inspired by Java 8, complete core
collection interfaces and implementations with JSON/SQL serialization,
and consolidate internal utilities.
- Sequential and parallel stream execution (`Stream[T]`, `Parallel()`, `Sequential()`)
using Go 1.23+ iterators (`iter.Seq[T]`).
- Source constructors: `StreamOf`, `StreamOfSlice`, `StreamOfCollection`,
`StreamOfSeq`, `StreamRange`, `StreamRangeClosed`, `StreamConcat`,
`StreamGenerate`, `StreamIterate`, and `StreamEmpty`.
- Intermediate operations: `Filter`, `Map`, `FlatMap`, `Distinct`, `DistinctBy`,
`Sorted`, `SortedBy`, `Limit`, `Skip`, `TakeWhile`, `DropWhile`, and `Peek`.
- Terminal operations: `ForEach`, `ForEachOrdered`, `ToSlice`, `Collect`,
`Reduce`, `Count`, `Min`, `Max`, `AnyMatch`, `AllMatch`, `NoneMatch`,
`FindFirst`, `FindAny`, and `OnClose` handlers with `sync.OnceFunc` guards.
- Concurrent/parallel safety: Worker pool with panic propagation, shared panic
flags to stop upstream producers, and channel draining to prevent goroutine leaks.
- Collectors: `ToList`, `ToSet`, `ToMap`, `Joining`, `GroupingBy`,
`PartitioningBy`, `Counting`, `SummarizingInt/Long/Double`, `Mapping`,
`Filtering`, and `Reducing`.
- Define `Collection[T]`, `List[T]`, and `Set[T]` in `pkg/core/collection.go`.
- Relocate `Map[K, V]` from `pkg/util/map.go` to `pkg/core/collection.go` to unify
the collection hierarchy.
- Provide `ArrayList[T]` and `HashSet[T]` backed by `AbstractList[T]` and
`AbstractSet[T]`.
- Implement `json.Marshaler` and `json.Unmarshaler` on `ArrayList` and `HashSet`
with zero-value lazy initialization and `null`/empty handling.
- Implement `driver.Valuer` and `sql.Scanner` on `ArrayList` and `HashSet` for
seamless SQL/database persistence (PostgreSQL JSONB, MySQL JSON, SQLite TEXT).
- Introduce `internal/utils` package with centralized `IsNil` and text utilities.
- Add comprehensive documentation and Go test examples (`Example...`) covering
stream operators and collectors.
