Summary

Stacked on #69. Merge that first; this PR then retargets to main.

  1. Settings Fleet doesn't return disappeared from the plan. If a configured key isn't in Fleet's response at all, fleet-plan skipped it without saying so. That can be a rename on Fleet's side, like VPP's teams → fleets, or a control Fleet only applies globally but the repo sets in a team file. Either way it never showed up anywhere.
  2. Settings fleet-plan couldn't compare were blamed on the token. They were listed under "Token lacks read access to: …", even though the usual cause is a key Fleet doesn't support or has renamed.

Changes

  • internal/diff
    • diffFlat now returns the keys Fleet doesn't report (section.key), and they go into SkippedConfigSections.
    • Keys that are present but empty are still skipped without a note, as before.
    • lookupNested replaces getNestedValue, so a missing key can be told apart from an empty one.
  • internal/output: these settings now get their own markdown note: ℹ️ Not diffed (Fleet does not report these, or the token cannot read them): …. It's deduplicated across teams and sorted.
    • The permission warning now covers only software, profiles and label host counts.

Against live Fleet, the note lists 8 keys:

  • 4 global-only controls set in team files: android_enabled_and_configured, apple_require_hardware_attestation, enable_turn_on_windows_mdm_manually, windows_migration_enabled
  • 3 certificate_authorities.ndes_scep_proxy settings
  • mdm.end_user_license_agreement

Test plan

  • go build ./...
  • go vet ./...
  • go test -race ./...
    • New markdown test, written first and failing before the change.
    • The team-settings test that pinned the old silent skip now expects the key to be listed.
  • golangci-lint run reports no issues
  • Coverage did not regress (92.5% total)
  • Live run against a copy of fleet-gitops shows the note with the 8 keys above, and no permission warning

Invariants

  • API client still issues GET only — no Fleet state is mutated
  • HTTPS still enforced (FLEET_PLAN_INSECURE=1 remains the only escape hatch)
  • No secrets in code, logs, output, fixtures, or CI comments (only key names are listed, never values)
  • No platform-specific code

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • Diff reports include a “Not diffed” note for configured sections the API does not report, without treating missing sections as permission errors.
    • Empty configuration values continue to be skipped silently.

A configured setting whose key Fleet does not return was skipped without a
word, so a rename on the Fleet side (like VPP's teams -> fleets) or a key
Fleet only honours globally simply vanished from the plan. diffFlat now
returns those keys and they join SkippedConfigSections.

Those used to be folded into "Token lacks read access to: ...", which
blamed permissions for what is usually an unsupported or renamed key. They
now get their own note: "Not diffed (Fleet does not report these, or the
token cannot read them): ...". The permission warning keeps software,
profiles, and label host counts.

Against live Fleet the note lists 8 keys: 4 global-only controls set in
team files, the NDES CA settings, and the EULA path.

Walkthrough

The diff engine now records configured keys that the API does not report. Markdown output lists skipped config sections in a separate informational note. Present-but-empty keys remain silently skipped.

Track unreported keys
internal/diff/differ.go, internal/diff/differ_test.go, docs/Architecture.md
Diff functions collect and propagate API-unreported key paths. Tests and documentation describe the skipped-key behavior.

Plans now show the not-diffed note even when no changes are detected, and current no-team controls remain reportable. No actionable merge risk remains.

- Line 2067: Update diffControls so when mdm is nil and rest is nonempty, it
returns "controls" as a skipped section instead of empty results; preserve the
existing behavior for other inputs. Locate the change at the return in
diffControls.

Review comments at @internal/output/markdown.go:
- Line 196: Update HasChanges so non-empty SkippedConfigSections count as
output-bearing results. This lets RenderDiffMarkdown render the not-diffed note
instead of returning the matching-state message when skipped sections are the
only result.

- diffControls reports "controls" as skipped when the no-team file
configures controls but global MDM config was not fetched, instead of
  dropping them silently.
- The not-diffed note also renders under "No changes detected". HasChanges
is deliberately unchanged: the same keys are skipped on every run, so
counting them would make every plan post a comment and exit 2 under
  --detailed-exitcodes.
