What

Real Chrome connector for Extensions > Local browser (replaces the permanently disabled "Unavailable" state).

  • packages/chrome-extension: MV3 extension (activeTab + scripting + loopback host only; never reads cookies/credentials). Popup: pair with code, share/stop sharing the current tab.
  • Host: main-owned loopback endpoint (127.0.0.1:47821-47825, extension Origin + literal Host checks), one-time pairing code (5 min, single use, burns after 5 wrong tries), bearer token, per-tab consent, revoke from either side, consent dropped on navigation. Native messaging not used (needs per-OS registration and a store extension ID); see docs/browser-connector.md.
  • Agent: browser_tabs / browser_read, offered only while a tab is shared; each read asks permission; unshared tabs refused before reaching the browser.
  • Page: connection status card, Install extension + pairing code (copy/new code), shared-tab list with Stop sharing, empty state, privacy note. English source copy, 8 locales.
  • Tests: packages/core/test/browser.test.ts, packages/desktop/test/browser-host.test.ts, tests/unit/chrome-extension.test.ts, E2E tests/e2e/browser-connector.spec.ts (screenshots dark+light in evidence/browser-connector/).

Not done

Chrome Web Store publishing (extension is loaded unpacked via the Install button); extension service worker is not exercised in a real Chrome here (host protocol is tested with the same HTTP calls).

Risk and rollback

New loopback listener (extension-origin only). Revert the PR to remove; state is memory-only.

Attestation

  • Rules read.
  • Error copy is product language.
  • Responsive and themed. Theme variables only; dark and light screenshots attached. Not checked below 1440 wide beyond a 720px wrap rule.
  • Security holds. No page text or secrets reach the renderer.
  • Docs updated in this PR.
  • I verified this carefully. Local lint/typecheck/unit/i18n/E2E for new spec run; full E2E left to CI.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Connect the Chrome extension to Cortex using a one-time pairing code that expires after five minutes.
    • Choose which browser tabs to share, review shared tabs, and revoke access or disconnect at any time.
    • Let Cortex list shared tabs and read visible text from a selected tab; only explicitly shared tabs are accessible.
    • Find extension installation and connection instructions in the browser screen.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on pairing, tab-sharing controls, and browser access limits.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds a Chrome extension that pairs with a loopback host, shares selected tabs, and provides tab-listing and text-reading tools. The desktop app exposes pairing and tab controls, and the UI and documentation describe the connection and its access limits.

Changes

Browser connector

Layer / File(s) Summary
Browser bridge and tools
packages/core/src/browser.ts, packages/core/src/index.ts, packages/core/src/session.ts, packages/core/src/tool.ts, packages/core/test/browser.test.ts
BrowserBridge manages pairing, authentication, consent, polling, and reads. browser_tabs and browser_read use the bridge, and sessions omit browser tools when no shared tabs are available.
Loopback host and desktop bridge
packages/desktop/src/browser-host.ts, packages/desktop/src/main.ts, packages/desktop/src/preload.ts, packages/desktop/test/browser-host.test.ts
The desktop host validates loopback requests and extension origins, then routes browser operations to BrowserBridge. The main process and preload expose browser controls and state changes through IPC.
Chrome extension pairing and tab sharing
packages/chrome-extension/*, electron-builder.yml, eslint.config.mjs, tests/unit/chrome-extension.test.ts
The extension pairs with the host, tracks shared-tab consent, and handles read and revoke commands. Its popup provides pairing and tab-sharing controls; the app package includes the extension resource.
App browser controls and guidance
packages/app/src/api.ts, packages/app/src/screens/extras/*, packages/i18n/locales/*/extras.json, docs/browser-connector.md, AGENTS.md, tests/e2e/browser-connector.spec.ts
The app displays connection status, pairing controls, and shared tabs with per-tab revocation. Localized strings and documentation describe the connection and tab-access scope; the end-to-end test exercises pairing, sharing, and revocation.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 13415

After a shared tab navigates, it can remain listed and browser tools can remain available even though reads fail. This is a bounded stale-state issue, but host consent should be revoked on navigation.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 13415

The connector adds useful access controls, but pairing can trust an impersonating local service, previously authorized requests can survive replacement of a connection, and navigation does not consistently clear sharing state. The principal exposure is the local user’s shared browser pages, rather than a remotely accessible service.

Retained concerns

  • High · security · inferred: Pairing does not authenticate the desktop endpoint. A local process able to occupy an earlier candidate port can receive the pairing code, return an arbitrary nonempty token, and become the extension’s command endpoint. After the user shares a tab, that endpoint can issue read commands and receive its visible content without passing through the genuine app’s per-read permission control. This requires local port-binding capability and user sharing; it is not a remote web-page-only attack, and extension consent still limits reads to shared tabs.
  • Medium · security · inferred: Bearer authentication is checked before awaiting the request body, but mutations are not bound to the authenticated session. A client holding the previous valid token can begin a request, delay its body across disconnect or re-pairing, and then mutate the replacement session. For example, an old /disconnect can clear the new token and grants. Token replacement and state reset protect later authentication attempts, but not these already-admitted requests. Independent extension consent remains a countercontrol against arbitrary browser reads.
  • Low · security · observed: The documented navigation-revocation contract is not maintained across both consent owners. There is no navigation cleanup listener. When a later read detects a changed URL, the extension removes its local grant without notifying the host and reports a failed result; core rejects that result without removing its grant. The old tab therefore remains listed and browser tools remain offered. Ordinary reads of the changed URL are blocked by the extension, so this state drift alone does not establish content disclosure.
  • Medium · security · inferred: Read authorization and result provenance are separated by an asynchronous scripting operation. The extension checks a tabs.get URL, executes the script, and labels the returned text with that earlier URL. Core’s URL comparison therefore does not independently establish which document produced the text. Navigation during this interval could bypass the intended page-specific consent boundary if Chrome permits execution on the replacement document. Actual disclosure is unverified; activeTab restrictions are material counterevidence, and browser scheduling behavior is not covered by the inspected helper tests.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The principal confidentiality scope is title, URL, and up to 50,000 characters of readable text per shared-tab read, including authenticated or intranet pages the user can already view. The grant resides in a shared core bridge and is available to sessions whose agent and bot tool policies permit browser tools. No remote listener, cloud IAM authority, or cross-tenant access is established by the inspected connector.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The strongest supported attack path is local endpoint impersonation: occupy a candidate port, answer pairing successfully, wait for the user to share a tab, then issue read commands and collect results. A separate authority-retention path requires an earlier valid bearer token and a request delayed across session replacement. Both arise from newly introduced connector behavior; neither requires a remotely exposed listener.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The genuine host rejects ordinary website origins and nonliteral loopback Host values. Its Origin check accepts any syntactically valid Chrome extension ID, not a pinned identity; the pairing secret and bearer token provide the substantive authorization. Codes expire after five minutes, burn after five wrong guesses, and are consumed on success. Core and extension independently check tab consent, while the genuine agent read invokes the permission service.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Revocation, abort, and timeout prevent pending reads from returning late results to the requester. Abort and timeout remove pending entries but do not remove already queued read commands, so browser-side extraction may still occur before its result is ignored. Separately, failed navigation results leave the host’s grant intact. Cleanup therefore protects result delivery more consistently than it stops browser work or synchronizes consent ownership.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Establish authenticated desktop identity before transmitting the pairing secret or accepting a command endpoint. A mutually authenticated pairing exchange or authenticated local transport would address impersonation; response shape and Origin syntax alone do not provide peer identity.
  • proposed — Bind admitted requests and commands to a session generation, and bind tab grants and read results to document identity. Synchronize navigation and invalid-consent cleanup with the host, and retire queued work when its grant or request ends. These changes would make replacement, revocation, and navigation explicit authorization transitions rather than loosely coupled state updates.

🟡 Minor · Remove host consent when navigation invalidates extension consent. · background.js:43-58

packages/chrome-extension/background.js:43-58
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Remove host consent when navigation invalidates extension consent.

When a shared tab navigates, read() rejects with tab_not_shared. The catch block then calls stop(cmd.tabId, false), which removes extension consent without notifying BrowserBridge. BrowserBridge.complete() rejects this { ok: false } result before its URL-mismatch cleanup runs. Therefore, BrowserBridge keeps the old tab in this.tabs, so browser_tabs still lists it and browser_read remains available even though each read fails.

Handle navigation cleanup in packages/chrome-extension/background.js and revoke the corresponding host consent. The cleanup must remove local consent and send the revoke notification.
