Summary

Repair independently reproduced desktop permission, native-session and UI
recovery defects. Preserve parent deny rules, per-file read and symlink boundary
checks, PATCH omission semantics, MCP/desktop consent and skill discovery.
Correct call ownership, credentials recovery, UTF-8 request decoding, SSE/Code
reconnect, missing-ID history and failed-deletion feedback. Include AGENTS.md and
the audit report; adopt SDK 0.4.9/API types 0.3.8.

Related backend PR

Companion: https://github.com/CortexLM/backend/pull/525. Both PRs remain unmerged.
Backend fixes shared voice/stream contracts and product-runtime defects.

Verification

  • Source: 509 passed, one optional skip; typecheck/lint/i18n audit clean.
  • Actual built Electron: 239 end-to-end tests passed. Later targeted checks
    covered Code-watch, skill-schema and failed-deletion changes.
  • Actual Electron corrupt-store boot preserved raw bytes; real loopback auth
and call regressions passed. Forced DELETE 500 restored the Chat with an error.
  • Current build Chat redirects inspected at 960x640/1440x900 in light/dark after
fonts and animations settled; no blank/overlap/overflow or Back trap.

Boundaries

No merge/deployment. Linux runtime checks are not signed macOS/Windows package
acceptance or the user's real provider/device/farm acceptance. Undo deletion
remains pending until the toast closes. Foreign pairing screenshots and unused
intermediate archives are excluded; existing tracked provenance archives stay.
The backend refuses live Stripe keys. Provider reconciliation uses its existing
60-second scheduler tick without a separate cadence gate. CI is green on
2e614159406bde06ae33cc8f157a076792a931bc: workflow 37748727589, all four
Linux Electron shards, all six Windows build/package/launch shards, all four
macOS build/package/launch shards and lint/typecheck/unit/i18n passed. CodeQL
also passed. This PR stays draft with the real-installation acceptance limit.
Latest head: 2e614159406bde06ae33cc8f157a076792a931bc. The follow-up fixes
register destination navigation before the image-draft handoff and constrain
Code diff header/grid width. Assertions are unchanged; macOS/Windows CI confirmed
the overflow correction. The acceptance question expired unanswered;
delivery proceeds with controlled evidence, not a claimed user waiver.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

This pull request updates tool permissions and skill exposure, desktop authentication and native call handling, renderer event recovery and Chat navigation, PATCH parsing, and locale checks. It also updates vendored SDK and API-type archives and records audit and release-status information.

Changes

Core tool permissions and session rules

Layer / File(s) Summary
Canonical paths and search permissions
packages/core/src/tool.ts, packages/core/test/session.test.ts, packages/core/src/session.ts, AGENTS.md, docs/engine.md
Filesystem targets resolve through existing ancestors and symlinks. glob and grep check read permission on search roots and eligible files. Tests cover denied reads and symlink escapes.
Session rules, skills, and tool classification
packages/core/src/session.ts, packages/core/src/computer-use.ts, packages/core/test/session.test.ts, packages/core/test/services.test.ts, packages/core/test/computer-use.test.ts, AGENTS.md, docs/engine.md
Sessions add MCP approval rules and inherit parent-agent denials. The skill schema lists enabled skills. Computer-use classification recognizes observation verbs at the start of tool names. Tests cover these rules and schemas.

Desktop runtime and native sessions

Layer / File(s) Summary
Browser request body handling and connector tests
packages/desktop/src/browser-host.ts, packages/desktop/test/browser-host.test.ts, tests/e2e/browser-connector.spec.ts, docs/browser-connector.md
Loopback request bodies are limited by byte count and decoded once as UTF-8. Tests cover multibyte payloads. Connector screenshots use per-test output paths.
Remote restore and credential handling
packages/desktop/src/main.ts, packages/desktop/src/remote-session.ts, packages/desktop/test/persistent-auth.test.ts, tests/e2e/remote-restore.spec.ts, docs/connection-modes.md, AGENTS.md
Restore distinguishes credential-read failures from completed reads and preserves credentials for transient identity-provider failures. Native logout accepts 200 or 204. Tests cover retained credentials and later restore.
Native call ownership and start fencing
packages/desktop/src/main.ts, packages/desktop/src/remote-call.ts, packages/desktop/test/remote-call.test.ts, AGENTS.md
Call startup tracks a pending renderer and assigns ownership after startup succeeds. Generation checks reject invalidated starts. Tests cover cancellation and superseded starts.
Code watch reconnect and selected archives
packages/desktop/src/remote-code.ts, packages/desktop/test/remote-chat.test.ts, packages/desktop/package.json, packages/app/package.json, vendor/AGENTS.md, vendor/README.md, AGENTS.md
Code watch uses SDK reconnect behavior and refreshes state on subscription response. The selected SDK and API-type archives change to 0.4.9 and 0.3.8.

Renderer recovery and Chat navigation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Chat deletion and navigation history
packages/app/src/screens/chat/live-chat.tsx, packages/app/src/shell/nav.tsx, tests/e2e/chat-missing.spec.ts, tests/e2e/navigation.spec.ts, AGENTS.md
Failed Chat deletion returns to the Chat and displays an error. Missing-ID Chat routes redirect home without retaining the invalid history entry. End-to-end tests cover both behaviors.
Event-stream refresh and reconnect
packages/app/src/state/live.ts, packages/client/src/index.ts, packages/client/test/client.test.ts, tests/unit/live-events.test.ts, AGENTS.md
Event errors trigger registered query and message refresh callbacks, then reconnect while listeners remain. The client reports unexpected active-stream closure. Tests cover refresh and cleanup.

PATCH input semantics

Layer / File(s) Summary
Bot and task partial updates
packages/schema/src/index.ts, packages/schema/test/schema.test.ts
Bot and task update schemas make selected fields optional without create-time defaults. Tests verify that parsing partial inputs preserves omitted fields.

Audit and release-status records

Layer / File(s) Summary
Correction notes and verification boundaries
docs/audit-2026-10-08.md, AGENTS.md, docs/engine.md
The audit and engineering notes record reported corrections, verification results, and acceptance boundaries.
Native updater feed status
AGENTS.md
The release-status notes describe the validated update-feed URL conditions and state that production signing and publishing remain unconfigured.

Locale catalog parity

Layer / File(s) Summary
Locale keys and catalog entries
tests/unit/locales.test.ts, packages/i18n/locales/fr/workBot.json
The locale test requires matching top-level keys across catalogs. The French workBot catalog removes two entries.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 9667a

The permission hardening still leaves gaps. A dangling project symlink can let a write land outside the project without approval, and denied filenames can appear in search errors. Native calls can start for a closed window. Live views can miss updates or keep showing a deleted chat after reconnecting. Resolve these before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 9667a

The changes strengthen permission enforcement and recovery, but file-access safeguards still have limitations, and denied requests can reveal private path metadata. The remaining exposure depends on the desktop user's permissions and enabled tools; broader access across accounts or services has not been established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Canonicalized filesystem checks feed full resolved paths into an unchanged denial-to-model channel. PermissionService includes the denied pattern in its error, SessionService retains that message, and history replay includes it as tool output. Base glob already exposed ordinary relative filenames, so that exposure is not attributed to this PR. The narrower introduced exposure is resolved-target metadata, particularly for an in-tree symlink whose external target was not supplied by the caller. Blocking file contents does not block this metadata disclosure.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated filesystem authority is that of the process executing an enabled local tool in a directory-bearing session. A containment bypass can reach OS-accessible paths outside the project, subject to applicable tool approval and process permissions. Race exploitation additionally needs mutable filesystem components; dangling-link writes still pass the write gate. Anonymous remote access, cross-account reachability, elevated OS privileges, or fleet-wide exposure were not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The retained pathname-race and ENOENT/dangling-symlink traversal findings remain relevant residual conditions, but their authority and basic execution paths predate this PR. Base already used pathname-based reads and writes with lexical containment. Head improves the existing-symlink case, including an existing external ancestor followed by a missing ordinary suffix; it does not establish descriptor-bound access or fail-closed handling of every unresolved symlink.
  • observed — The retained information-disclosure finding is supported by the denial message and history-replay source. The new read checks stop denied file contents, but their errors retain path metadata. The search regression test excludes PRIVATE_SECRET contents, not filenames or canonical paths; it therefore does not rebut metadata disclosure. Ordinary filename enumeration existed at base, while additional resolved-target exposure is the narrower PR concern.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Credential recovery retains identity-validation gates: saved origin must match, refresh precedes promotion, and successful identity validation checks account continuity. Rotated credentials are preserved during transient identity-read failure only when a prior account binding exists; the failed refresh invalidates the active lifetime rather than granting usable authority. Call authentication checks the active identity again after refresh.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Credential writes are serialized and identity-bound writes check cancellation before execution. Restore now distinguishes credential-read failure from invalid saved data, preserving unread credentials for recovery. Logout removes the active binding, aborts chat activity, and retries credential deletion in terminal cleanup even when remote logout fails. Local teardown does not prove successful server-side revocation.
  • observed — Native call starts now reserve a generation before authentication and reject stale completion after authentication and session start. Main assigns renderer ownership only after start completes and permits the pending owner to cancel. Code-watch reconnects retain account-lifetime cancellation and guard callbacks before notification. These wrapper safeguards are supported, but complete dependency admission, retry, and cleanup transitions remain only partially covered.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Separate model-facing denial text from detailed local permission diagnostics. Preserve actionable paths in trusted consent or audit views, but avoid returning previously unknown canonical targets through tool errors and history replay.
  • proposed — For stronger filesystem containment, bind approval to the object actually opened and adopt a fail-closed policy for unresolved symlink components. This would address the pre-existing gap between pathname approval and filesystem access rather than treating canonicalization as an atomic sandbox.

Review comments at @packages/app/src/screens/chat/live-chat.tsx:
- Line 351: Update the delete failure handler in `onClose` to check whether the
current route is still the Chat screen for this session before calling
`go("chat", { id })`. Always show the error toast, but do not navigate if the
user has moved to another screen while the DELETE request was pending.

Review comments at @packages/app/src/state/live.ts:
- Around line 17-18: Update the recovery flow around connect and resync so
refreshes run only after the replacement subscription is established, closing
the gap between the snapshot and stream. Retry any refresh that fails so queries
or messages are refreshed after an outage.
- Line 108: Update the rejection handler in refresh so it preserves existing
behavior for transient fetch failures, but when the live session receives a
not_found error, clear records and settled, reset status to idle, and publish
the updated state.

Review comments at @packages/core/src/tool.ts:
- Line 141: Update the search permission-check flow around ctx.ask(abs, ...) so
permission_denied errors do not expose denied candidate paths; apply the same
handling to grep. Keep checking read permission before returning names or
reading contents, and update the denied-file test to verify the filename is
absent from tool errors.
- Line 57: Update candidate-file handling around the realpath resolution so
pathname validation and reading cannot be separated by a symlink replacement.
Open the candidate without following replacement symlinks, validate the opened
file through its descriptor, and have grep read from that same descriptor rather
than reopening abs by pathname.
- Around line 57-60: Update the `target()` path resolution flow so an `ENOENT`
from `realpath(parent)` does not treat a dangling symlink as a missing path
component; detect and reject or safely resolve dangling symlinks before
reconstructing the pathname, preserving the existing missing-component behavior
for ordinary paths.

Review comments at @packages/desktop/src/remote-call.ts:
- Around line 53-54: Update the start flow in remote-call so owner cancellation
is registered before awaiting auth(origin). After authentication completes,
reject the start if the initiating WebContents was lost, preventing creation of
a server call for a destroyed renderer.

Backend #525 repacked api-types 0.3.8 after merging #524 so it keeps turn_error. Copy the archive byte for byte from backend main apps/web/vendor and update the lock integrity and vendor README hash. SDK 0.4.9 bytes are unchanged.
File tools follow dangling symlinks before external-directory checks and read approved paths through one descriptor, refusing a link swapped in after approval. Per-candidate glob/grep refusals no longer reveal the denied filename. The live bus resyncs only after the replacement stream opens and keeps a failed reopen pending; a deleted session clears its messages on resync. A delete failure no longer pulls the user off a screen they opened. A Bot call start refuses an owner window lost during authentication.
