Why

Launching mining on 8x RTX 5090 (Vast) hit three miner transport defects and a long manual chain.

Changes

fix(miner): src/hypertrain/miner/core.py, src/hypertrain/data/store.py

  • _put_object sends a bytes body (Content-Length). The previous one-shot iterator was sent chunked, which the miner token proxy rejects.
  • Object PUT/GET and Api.call GET now retry transport errors and 5xx (1+5 attempts, ~31 s backoff). 4xx fail at once, and signed POSTs are never replayed.
  • fetch_to(workers=N) fetches 1 MiB parts through a bounded sliding window (4N in flight). Parts are written in index order, with the same per-part and whole-object verification as before. Queued GETs are cancelled on error. The miner uses 16 workers for job inputs (~5.7 GB per island).

feat(scripts): scripts/launch_cuda_run.sh, an idempotent one-command launch:
preflight -> beacon -> Vast admit -> staging -> CUDA qualification -> rescue -> roots -> backend bootstrap -> POST /v2/admin/runs (asserts backend cuda) -> dispatch.json + master reload -> auditors -> relays -> miner host (8x RTX 5090, allowlisted driver, torch 2.14.0+cu130, HT_IMAGE_DIGEST) -> round open -> miner loop.

  • --dry-run makes no provider call.
  • Each stage writes a .done marker and prints FAIL <stage>: <reason> on failure.

Tests (targeted, CPU only, no new CI job)

  • tests/miner/test_client_network_v2.py: Content-Length on every attempt, retry on transport/5xx, no retry on 4xx, attempt bound, POST never replayed.
  • tests/data/test_parts.py: ordered reassembly despite out-of-order completion, and no temp file left or further GETs queued after a failing part.
  • tests/test_launch_cuda_run.py: an explicit mode is required, and preflight fails closed before spending anything.

Local: ruff format/check, the CI mypy command, the touched test files (49 passed) and tests/test_publish_exclusions.py all pass. The launcher dry-run on the real controller (run ef5350e3) passed preflight and built the miner bundle.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a staged launcher for 8-GPU CUDA runs, with a dry-run option and resumable stages.
  • Improvements
    • Large data objects can now be downloaded in parallel while preserving their original order.
    • Network requests for downloads and uploads now retry eligible temporary failures. Signed POST requests are not replayed.
    • Job input downloads now use parallel fetching for faster retrieval.

- _put_object sends a bytes body (Content-Length) instead of a one-shot
iterator (chunked): the miner token proxy and similar fronts reject
chunked uploads. Content-addressed PUT, so transport errors and 5xx
are retried (1+5 attempts, ~31 s backoff); 4xx propagate at once.
- _get_object and Api.call GET retry the same way; signed POSTs are
  never replayed.
- fetch_to(workers=N) prefetches a bounded sliding window (4N parts) of
1 MiB parts concurrently, written in index order with unchanged
per-part and whole-object verification; queued GETs are cancelled on
error. The miner uses 16 workers for job inputs (~5.7 GB per island).
scripts/launch_cuda_run.sh chains, for one TAG (manifest/job/prep set):
preflight -> beacon pusher -> Vast admit -> deps/seed staging -> CUDA
qualification -> rescue -> roots -> backend bootstrap -> POST
/v2/admin/runs (verifies the run froze on backend cuda) -> dispatch.json
+ master reload -> auditors -> relays -> miner host bundle/config ->
round open -> miner retry loop -> hold the host lease to the cutoff.

- --dry-run is read-only (no provider call): checks the inputs, the
8x RTX 5090 / 170 SM profile, Vast base_url, master health, the miner
proxy, refuses a run already frozen on cpu, and builds the miner
bundle (master code + this branch's transport fixes) to prove the
  patch applies.
- Each stage writes <state>/<stage>.done and is skipped on re-run; every
failure prints `FAIL <stage>: <reason>` with the log path.
- Miner host is checked for 8x RTX 5090, an allowlisted driver and torch
  2.14.0+cu130; loop.sh exports HT_IMAGE_DIGEST and retries run-v2 until
  d_assign, bounded by the cutoff.

📝 Walkthrough

The changes add a staged CUDA run launcher and update data retrieval and miner networking. The launcher performs preflight checks, run setup, miner deployment, and round startup. Indexed object parts can be fetched concurrently, and selected GET and PUT requests now retry transport errors and server errors.

Changes: CUDA Run Launcher

Layer / File(s) Summary
Launcher setup and preflight
scripts/launch_cuda_run.sh, tests/test_launch_cuda_run.py
Adds mode and input validation, runtime helpers, run and host checks, and a dry-run exit before provider interaction. Tests cover the no-mode response and a missing-input preflight.
Admission and run preparation
scripts/launch_cuda_run.sh
Adds cutoff-window persistence and admission, then dependency staging, qualification, rescue, and root materialization stages.
CUDA registration and service setup
scripts/launch_cuda_run.sh
Bootstraps and verifies the CUDA backend, registers the run, updates dispatch configuration, and configures the auditor and relays.
Miner deployment and round startup
scripts/launch_cuda_run.sh
Validates the miner host, deploys the miner bundle and loop, opens the round when needed, and waits until cutoff.

Data Transfer Reliability

Layer / File(s) Summary
Concurrent indexed-part retrieval
src/hypertrain/data/store.py, tests/data/test_parts.py
Adds the workers option to fetch_to. Indexed parts are fetched concurrently when configured, yielded in index order, and queued requests are cancelled on error or early close. Tests cover ordered reassembly and a failed fetch.
Miner request retries and fetch wiring
src/hypertrain/miner/core.py, tests/miner/test_client_network_v2.py
Adds retries for GET requests and object PUTs on transport errors and HTTP 5xx responses. API calls other than GET are not retried. Miner input fetching uses 16 workers. Tests cover retries, retry limits, and non-retry cases.

As written, the launcher can report a successful launch while no miner is training. A re-run can also proceed after its rented hosts are gone. Codec-v2 runs can fail repeatedly because a dependency is missing. Uploads may retry after the publication cutoff. Fix these issues before merging.

Validate the v2 codec before starting the miner.

run-v2 launches the island and validates its artifacts. For manifests with codec_version == 2, that validation imports zstandard. The current fallback check can pass before this lazy import, so a missing dependency can make the loop fail and retry until the cutoff.

A re-run after the parent process exits resumes without hosts.

The header (Lines 11-14) says the supervisor deletes the rented hosts when this process exits. The header also says a crash needs a fresh TAG. The code does not enforce this:

  • After admit.done exists, a re-run skips admit. The journal.jsonl guard at Line 147 never runs.
  • The re-run runs deps, qualify, rescue and later stages with a new --parent-pid "$$".
  • The re-run reuses the stale A/CUT from $STATE/window.

Hosts must stay up for master-side CUDA audit replay. If the crash happens after rescue, the re-run can complete every stage and log LAUNCHED with no hosts.

Fix: record the admitting parent PID. On any re-run where admit.done exists, fail closed unless that PID is still alive.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Check the publication cutoff before each PUT attempt.

When _bounded_put calls _put_object near its deadline, a 5xx response can trigger another PUT after the deadline or after cancellation. _bounded_put checks only before the first attempt. Make the deadline and cancellation check available to each retry attempt so publication stops at the cutoff.

…n out of retry logs

pgrep -f /opt/miner/loop.sh matched the remote bash -c running it, so the loop never started while the stage reported success; use [/]opt pattern and verify the loop runs. Retry warnings log the error type and status, not the URL (which carries the proxy token). The parallel-fetch test proves concurrency with an event instead of random sleeps.
