Stacked on #871 — review this PR's own commits (listed under Commits below). The first 15 are #871's: "Add an in-process embedding engine to the inference patch", "Add conversation memory's encrypted store and engine", "Read memory sources from their local stores on this Mac", "Let suggestions use the earlier messages of the conversation", "Add Settings -> Memory and start memory with the app", "Document conversation memory", "Require a mail reply's whole quote header to be the thread's people", "Make an ambiguous expression explicit and give memory's main-actor classes a nonisolated deinit", "Split expressions that older compilers type-check too slowly", "Move the memory poll loop body out of its Task closure", "Keep deleted memory out of caches and stale writes, and starts in order", "Make the memory readers reconcile, retry and survive bad input", "Accept only an unambiguous client quote header, and close cache races", "Give mail no conversation scope from its body", "Fix the memory issues #872's review found in #871's files". The merge commit "Merge #871's latest memory fixes" only brings #871's newest fix into this branch; it adds nothing of its own. Proposal: #850

Summary

Two things that make a reply easier to write, both on this Mac only:

  1. Answer cards (off by default). When you open an empty reply to a message that asks you something ("How did the pilot go?", "Could you send the Q3 numbers?", "Are you free Thursday?"), Cotabby drafts an answer from your own conversation memory and shows it on a card under the caret, with the messages it came from. Click the card (or press Tab in an empty reply) and the draft is pasted at the caret for you to edit; Esc or just typing dismisses it. Nothing is ever inserted without that click or Tab.
  2. Mail reply context (always on, mail apps only). Suggestions in a mail reply now read the quoted thread below the caret: who said what, the thread's subject, and who you are answering. Before, a reply's prompt held only the quote's From/Date/To lines and was named after Outlook's mailbox window, the screen excerpt kept the message list (whose previews of other mail the model copied), and "Dear " often completed to the user's own name.

Answers: how it works

AnswerCoordinator (App/Coordinators/Answers) orchestrates; each rule lives in a pure type with tests.

  1. When. A focused, non-secure field that is still waiting for its body (ReplyFieldEmptiness: empty, only a signature above the quote, or only a salutation with the caret on a fresh line), only in a mail app (Mail, Outlook classic and new) or a chat app whose memory source is on (Teams, WhatsApp) (IncomingMessageResolver.answersIn; never a browser page or any other app's field, whose text after the caret a page could shape like a quoted mail), where Cotabby is on by exactly the rules suggestions use (SuggestionAvailabilityEvaluator: globally on, not paused, not off for Low Power Mode, not disabled for the app or site), with Answer Questions on, memory running, and Apple Intelligence or a local model available. Debounced 400 ms; every async step re-checks that the same field is still focused and still empty.
  2. What is being asked. IncomingMessageResolver takes the quoted original below the caret (Outlook replies), or the newest incoming messages of the chat the window names, read from memory (delta-synced first, at most every 20 s; exactly one conversation must match). Mail without its quote below the caret (Apple Mail) gets no answer. If the newest message is the user's own, they already replied: no card. QuestionDetector finds the asking sentences (English and Turkish questions, question particles, and requests such as "please confirm", "I would like", "lütfen").
  3. Facts. MemoryEngine.answerSearch searches any conversation of the sources the user turned Use for answers on for (none by default), plus, for a Teams chat, the chat Cotabby identified from the window (a mail answer has no conversation of its own, see below), never the question's own records, with a small recency boost. A question about the user's time (SchedulingQuestion: "are you free Thursday?", "yarın müsait misin?") also reads the calendar live from EventKit for the days it names, when the Calendar source is on.
  4. Draft. AnswerDraftEngine: Apple Intelligence when available (its own instructions and session, an abstain marker; its abstention is final, and its reply keeps its paragraphs), otherwise, only when Open Source is the selected engine (so answers never load a model unasked), the selected local base model with a transcript prompt that ends at You: and stop sequences at the next speaker. Never the OpenAI-compatible endpoint, whatever engine autocomplete uses.
  5. Card. AnswerCardController shows a non-activating panel under the caret line that takes the first click without taking focus. It says which message it answers ("Answering Deniz Kaya: How did the pilot go?") and lists every fact the draft was given (AnswerAttribution). TemporaryKeyTap holds Tab and Esc only while the card is up (AnswerCardKeyPolicy: any other key, Return included, passes through and dismisses it); SuggestionInserter.pasteAtCaret pastes, so a mail's quoted original below the caret is never replaced. One draft per message is cached, and only while memory's engine, data and settings are unchanged (AnswerDraftCache: turning a source's "Use for answers" off or forgetting something drops cached drafts); a dismissed or answered message is not offered again. A message is identified by its thread (when known), sender, subject, date line and body, so two mails saying "Any update?" are two messages. A focus flicker keeps a draft or card for at most 1.5 s; a field that had nothing to offer is not prepared again until it changes.

Answers: privacy and security

The question is written by someone else, remembered messages were written by others, and a draft puts words in the user's mouth to another person. Four guarantees, each pinned by tests, and their limits:

  1. An answer is only ever a card the user must actively insert. Nothing is typed, pasted or sent on its own. Only a click on the card, or a plain Tab in an empty reply, pastes the draft at the caret; Esc, Return and every other key pass through to the app and withdraw the card; the paste happens only while the focused field and the frontmost app are still the card's app (a lagging focus snapshot never pastes into another app); the pasted text never ends in a line break, and Cotabby never presses Return (AnswerCardKeyPolicy, AnswerOfferTests). Limit: once pasted, the text is in the user's reply like their own writing; sending it is the user's action.
  2. Every fact from another conversation is visibly attributed before inserting. The card lists every fact the model was given (not a sample), each with its sender, conversation (or "untitled conversation"), date and app, and as much of its text as the model saw (three lines on the card, the rest on hover), and marks each one from a conversation other than the one being answered as "Other conversation" (AnswerAttribution, AnswerOfferTests). Limit: the card shows where facts came from, not which words of the draft came from which fact; a short fact (a date, a price) from another conversation can appear in the draft, attributed on the card. A draft that copies 12 or more words of another conversation's message is dropped.
  3. Remembered text and the incoming question are data, never instructions. Apple Intelligence gets every fact, the question, and every sender name, conversation title and asker quoted (their own double quotes made single so nothing closes the quote), on one line, names and titles clipped to 40 characters, labeled with its author, with instructions never to follow instructions in either, never to list or copy facts wholesale, and to answer NONE rather than guess. The local base model gets them as a transcript in which nothing from someone else can open a turn of its own (line breaks are flattened, a sender named "You" becomes "Them"). On top, AnswerGroundingPolicy.looksLikeInstructions recognises injected instructions ("ignore previous instructions", "disregard the rules", "you are now…", "system prompt", "list/repeat/show all the facts/messages/notes", "include the user's …", "in your reply, include…", and Turkish equivalents): such a message (or the asker's display name) gets no answer, and such a remembered fact (its sender, title or text) never reaches the prompt. The existing guards still apply to every draft: relevance and named-subject gates, every number and name grounded in the facts or the question, at least one fact used, nothing the secret scrubber would remove, no copied passage from another conversation (AnswerRulesTests, one assertion per pattern). Limit: the pattern list is heuristic; a rephrased injection can get past it, which is why the grounding guards, the attribution (2) and the explicit insert (1) do not depend on it.
  4. Other conversations are opt-in and off by default. Without any opt-in, a Teams answer can draw only on the chat being answered, and a mail answer on nothing but, for a scheduling question, free/busy times. "Use for answers to questions" is off for every source until the user turns it on (MemorySourceCatalog.isAnswerSource, MemoryEngineTests). Calendar can never be an answer source (no toggle, and answerSearch refuses it): its remembered events hold what a meeting is and who is in it, and answers give only busy and free times.

One quote-header reader, never a scope. Every decision that reads a mail quote header — what an answer replies to, its sender, subject and date, whether a reply is still empty, and the subject and addressee suggestions use — goes through one strict reader (MailQuoteHeader, via QuotedReplyParser.quotedMessage): text normalized first (line breaks, NFKC so fullwidth "@" is "@", invisible format characters removed), nothing header-like above the caret, the first header-like line anchored at a quote boundary, exactly one sender address, no quoted-printable or HTML remnants, and no second header block right after it. What it reads is data about the message; it never chooses which conversation memory or an answer searches (#871 gives mail no memory scope at all). A looser reader remains only to reformat the condensed thread the prompt carries anyway; it decides nothing. Limit: headers the strict reader does not accept (a Turkish "Kimden:" block, an attribution without an address) give no answer and no addressee.

The sender never chooses the scope (IncomingMessageResolver, IncomingMessageSpoofingTests): the conversation an answer treats as its own is never picked by message content. A quoted mail is data only: it says what is asked and by whom (IncomingMessageResolver.quotedIncoming), and the answer has no conversation of its own, whatever the quote's subject, sender or text say. All of a mail answer's facts therefore come from the user's opted-in answer sources, each marked "Other conversation" on the card, or from busy/free times. A header written inside a message body is quoted text and is ignored. Mail without its quote below the caret (Apple Mail) gets no answer. A Teams chat keeps its scope: it must be the one conversation Cotabby identifies from the window title (ConversationScopeResolver, synced first so a lookalike chat makes it ambiguous). Limit: the sender named on the card ("Answering …") is the one the quote header shows, which its sender controls; it only labels the card and the cache, and never selects facts.

Other guards. Drafting starts only when the best fact is relevant enough (adjustable similarity threshold, or an exact keyword match) and the facts mention what the question names (a question about "Northwind" is not answered from facts about "Contoso"). Non-answers ("I'm not sure", "I'll check", a counter-question) count as abstentions. Availability facts say only when the user is busy and free within working hours, never what an event is or who is in it (who asks comes from the message, which its sender controls); invitations the user declined do not count as busy. The answers log category says why an answer was skipped; names and terms are logged only at debug level.

Mail reply context: how it works

MailReplyContext (Support/Context, pure, over a shared QuotedReplyParser) reads the field's trailing text in mail apps only (Mail, Outlook, Spark, Airmail):

  • the prompt carries up to 1500 characters after the caret (other apps keep 192), condensed to "Sender: message" per quoted message, newest first, without headers, addresses, signatures or footers;
  • the quoted header's subject names the surface in the prompt instead of Outlook's mailbox window title ("Inbox • All Accounts"); it never chooses memory's scope (the sender wrote it; Add on-device conversation memory (opt-in): Teams, Mail, Outlook, WhatsApp, Calendar, documents #871's resolver decides that);
  • the newest quoted message's sender becomes a To: line right above the draft (never the user, never a bare address); Apple's prompt states it as a sentence;
  • the screen excerpt keeps only the compose column;
  • typing-history examples come from the same kind of app: an email takes only earlier email, and terminal or code-editor text never stands as the style of prose.

What leaves the Mac

Nothing. Answers run only in mail apps and enabled chat apps, so no web page can pose a question and collect the draft; they are drafted by Apple Intelligence or the local model; the endpoint is never used for them, and memory never reaches it (unchanged from the memory PR). Calendar is read through EventKit on this Mac. Everything the mail reply context reads from the quoted thread (condensed thread, subject, addressee) stays off the endpoint, which keeps receiving no trailing text and the plain window title, as on main.

Settings and defaults

  • Settings → Memory → Answers: Answer Questions (off by default), "Offer an answer when memory is at least N% sure" (45%), and "Find Facts" to try a question (results in the Playground).
  • Settings → Memory → Sources: Use for answers to questions (other conversations too) per enabled source, off by default.
  • Settings search finds "Answer Questions".

Commits

  1. Give mail replies their thread, subject, addressee and compose column
  2. Add the rules and memory search answers are drafted from
  3. Offer drafted answers on a card at the caret
  4. Document answers and mail reply context
  5. Keep mail reply bodies, read each quote once, and condense for Apple too (review findings)
  6. Drop cached answers when memory changes, and fix review findings
  7. Merge Add on-device conversation memory (opt-in): Teams, Mail, Outlook, WhatsApp, Calendar, documents #871's latest memory fixes (merge only: Add on-device conversation memory (opt-in): Teams, Mail, Outlook, WhatsApp, Calendar, documents #871's own commit, nothing of this PR's)

Each commit builds (build-for-testing); Cotabby.xcodeproj is regenerated with XcodeGen in each.

Shared with the selection rewrite PR

TemporaryKeyTap, SuggestionInserter.pasteAtCaret, LlamaGenerationOptions.stopSequences and DecodeStopPolicy's stop-sequence check (with its tests) are byte-identical to the selection rewrite PR's, so whichever lands second merges them as no-ops. Their doc comments name rewrite as the example user.

Not included / follow-ups

  • Per-app and per-window answer switches in the field-icon popup: that popup is not on main. Answers follow Cotabby's per-app disable list instead.
  • WhatsApp chats: the conversation is found from the window title, and WhatsApp's is always "WhatsApp" on main (see the memory PR), so WhatsApp messages get no answer card yet. Outlook replies and Teams chats work.
  • Availability from every calendar: free/busy reads every calendar EventKit shows (shared, delegated and subscribed ones too), so someone else's calendar can count as the user's busy time. Limiting it to calendars the user owns is a follow-up.
  • Apple Mail replies: Mail exposes no quote below the caret, so there is no question to read and Mail gets no answer card. Mail's suggestions still get the mail reply context.
  • A mail's own thread as facts: a mail answer never draws on the thread it replies to as "this conversation" (only opted-in sources, marked as another conversation's), because nothing in a mail identifies its thread safely; Add on-device conversation memory (opt-in): Teams, Mail, Outlook, WhatsApp, Calendar, documents #871 gives mail no memory scope for the same reason.
  • Answer eval data: the eval's 17 cases were rewritten with neutral synthetic content for this PR, so its numbers below are not comparable with the ones quoted in Proposal: an optional on-device Memory & Answers module (local RAG) #850.

Test plan

  • Build Cotabby and Cotabby Dev (Debug, unsigned): succeeded. Each of the 4 commits passes build-for-testing on its own, and xcodegen generate leaves each one unchanged.

  • Full suite with Add on-device conversation memory (opt-in): Teams, Mail, Outlook, WhatsApp, Calendar, documents #871 at 535a4fd merged in: 3002 tests, 35 skipped, 1 failure: AXTextGeometryResolverTests.test_resolveCaretRect_returnsRealGeometry_forNativeTextField, an environment-dependent test that fails on some runs on this Mac, on main too, and that this branch does not touch. 76 new tests; the branch's own skips are the 2 model-backed answer suites, which need RUN_LLAMA_EVAL (the other skips are main's live Accessibility and model tests, environment-gated on this Mac).

  • New and changed tests:

    • AnswerRulesTests (25): a dotted date stays in the question and names its day, Apple replies keep their paragraphs, the local model drafts only without Apple Intelligence, one assertion per injection pattern, ordinary questions that must not trip it, quoting for Apple Intelligence, quoted/clipped/screened names and titles, no injected transcript turns.
    • AnswerOfferTests (5): every fact attributed, other conversations marked, only a plain Tab or a click inserts, Return never does, no key is taken without a card, a paste only into the card's app (focused and frontmost), no trailing line break.
    • IncomingMessageSpoofingTests (12): a quoted mail never names a conversation (and mail gets no memory scope), answers only in mail and enabled chat apps, a quote-shaped textarea in a browser gets no card and Tab passes through, two "Any update?" mails are two messages, the sender's address, the strict reader and the empty-reply check agree, a header above the caret, a second address, quoted-printable, a missing boundary, a second header block, invisible/fullwidth characters, and a fake header inside the body.
    • IncomingMessageResolverTests (1), CalendarAnswerTests (4), MailReplyContextTests (17, incl. short bodies and sentences with links, an "Original Message" quote read once, Apple Intelligence gets the condensed thread), AnswerDraftCacheTests (2: drafts are dropped when settings, data or the engine change, and a draft prepared during a change is not kept).
    • MemoryEngineTests (+4): answer sources off by default; Calendar events are never answer facts.
    • DecodeStopPolicyTests (+3, shared with rewrite), SurfaceContextComposerTests (+1), TypingHistoryIndexTests (+1), AnswerDraftEvalTests.test_answerCasesAreConsistent.
  • SwiftLint 0.63.2 --strict: no violations. Type-check timing build (-warn-long-expression-type-checking=80 -warn-long-function-bodies=200): no warning in this branch's own code.

  • Suggestion eval and recall suite, before (Add on-device conversation memory (opt-in): Teams, Mail, Outlook, WhatsApp, Calendar, documents #871 at a5f2ec1) and after (this branch), Release, RUN_LLAMA_EVAL, gemma-4-E4B Q5_K_XL, identical cases and seed:

    Suite Before After
    test_reportEvalSuite (117 cases) quality 0.853, precision 0.865, coverage 0.938, wrong-show 0.111, shown 96/117; [email] n=24 0.763 identical: 0.853, 0.865, 0.938, 0.111, 96/117; [email] 0.763
    test_reportRecallSuite (28 cases) quality 0.821, shown 26/28, 23 correct / 3 wrong / 2 missed; [memory] 0.800 identical, every case's shown text the same
    latency p50 / p95 (eval suite) 975 / 1809 ms 957 / 1865 ms (machine load)

The suites cannot move with this change, and they did not. None of their 53 mail cases has a quoted header or more than 192 characters after the caret, which is the only input the mail reply context changes; none carries typing-history examples, which is the only input mayExemplify changes. The change is pinned by MailReplyContextTests and TypingHistoryIndexTests instead. Adding Outlook-reply cases with a quoted thread to the shared suites is a good follow-up.

  • Answer eval (AnswerDraftEvalTests, Release, RUN_LLAMA_EVAL, the 17 rewritten cases scored as the app would show them, hardened prompts): Apple Intelligence 17/17 (answers 12/12, abstentions 5/5); local gemma-4-E4B Q5_K_XL 16/17 (answers 11/12, abstentions 5/5).

    • The local model's one miss is a vague "It went well" without the number.
    • All of its abstention passes come from the guards dropping invented drafts, for example "The SSO add-on costs an additional 1,000 EUR per month". That is what the guards are for.
  • Manual: turn on Memory and Answer Questions, open an Outlook reply to a mail that asks something memory knows; check the card, its sources, click to insert, Esc to dismiss, and that the quoted thread below stays intact.

  • Manual: "Are you free Thursday?" with the Calendar source on: free and busy times only.

  • Manual: Outlook inline reply: the suggestion after "Dear " names the sender of the quoted mail.

  • Manual: reply in Outlook to a mail that asks something: with no source opted in for answers there is no card unless it is a scheduling question; with one opted in, every fact on the card is marked "Other conversation".

Conversation memory embeds passages with llama.cpp, next to the
completion engine. The pending CotabbyInference patch gains
CotabbyEmbeddingEngine: its own model and context (embeddings on, the
model's pooling), texts packed into one decode per batch and the cells
cleared after each, so memory use is fixed by the batch size. Measured
with Qwen3-Embedding-0.6B Q8_0: about 38 mail-sized passages per second
at a flat ~880 MB with a 1024-token batch, and vectors within cosine
0.9996 of sentence-transformers.

llama.cpp's backend is process-wide, so both engines now share it
through a reference-counted guard; unloading one no longer frees the
backend under the other.

This needs the matching change in FuJacob/cotabbyinference; until then
it rides in patches/cotabbyinference-upstream-pending.patch like the
other pending APIs.

A cancel is a generation counter, noted before a call waits for the
lock, so a cancel issued while a call is still waiting is not lost.

The core of an optional, on-device memory of the user's conversations,
with no source and no UI yet:

- MemoryStore keeps messages, conversations, participants, sync cursors
and one vector per passage in SQLite. Text, names, titles, ids,
cursors and vectors are sealed with MemoryVault (AES-256-GCM, subkeys
from a 256-bit Keychain key that never syncs); lookups and record ids
use HMAC tags. Timestamps, sources and the settings file are plain.
- MemoryEngine is the ingest pipeline every source shares (exclusions,
retention, mail quote stripping, secret and one-time-code scrubbing),
background indexing (newest first, each vector persisted as it is
computed, so a run resumes), and the scoped search: the conversation
the window names, then only conversations with exactly the same
people; an unknown, partial or ambiguous title returns nothing, and a
scope can require the thread to have exactly given people (a mail
reply's quoted addresses, as far as memory knows them), which also
picks the right audience among a mail thread's conversations. A mail
sender's display name never becomes a participant. A stopped engine
  refuses further writes.
- Search is hybrid: an exact half-precision vector scan with Accelerate
(FlatVectorIndex, filtered before scoring, so a scoped search never
comes back short) fused with BM25 over HMAC-tagged terms.
- EmbeddingCore wraps the inference package's embedding engine;
queries jump ahead of background batches. EmbeddingSchedulePolicy
lets small deltas run anytime and keeps backlogs to a plugged-in,
idle, cool Mac outside Low Power Mode; nothing runs while a suggestion
  is generating.
- MemoryEngineController owns on/off, the pinned embedding model
download (Qwen3-Embedding-0.6B Q8_0, pinned to a repository commit,
size and SHA-256 checked) and the
key. The Keychain store of typing history gains a label so memory's
item is named for what it is.

One read-only reader per source, each paging after a cursor it defines,
driven by MemoryHistorySync (when a source is switched on, on demand,
and every 15 minutes on AC power). Nothing is fetched from a network
and no account API is used:

- WhatsApp: its ChatStorage database.
- Apple Mail: the Envelope Index plus .emlx files, parsed by
EmailBodyExtractor (charsets, quoted-printable, HTML-only mail). Mail
is attacker-controlled, so parsing is bounded and linear: message,
header, boundary, nesting and part limits, and HTML converted in one
pass instead of regular expressions that rescan from every unclosed
tag. Mail counts as the user's own only when it sits in a Sent
mailbox, and junk is skipped, so a spoofed From cannot put words in
  the user's mouth.
- Outlook: the classic database, and New Outlook's HxStore.hxd (LZ4
blocks and HxStoreRecordParser), including meeting invitations.
HxStore records have no thread id or recipients, so a conversation
there is one topic with one sender, never a subject alone; the user's
own mail and mail without a sender each stay a conversation of their
own. In Mail and classic Outlook a message without a thread id is its
own conversation, never a shared bucket. Mail clients join threads by
References/In-Reply-To and subject, which any sender controls, so a
Mail or classic Outlook conversation is one thread with one audience
(MailAudience): a stranger folded into a thread, or a reply with
someone new on it, is another conversation. Mail people are addresses,
never display names or Reply-To, and only Mail's Sent mailbox or
Outlook's outgoing flag makes a message the user's own.
- Microsoft Teams: the new client's cache, read natively in place
(Snappy, LevelDB, Chromium IndexedDB and V8 value readers, a Swift
port of parts of CCL Forensics' MIT-licensed ccl_chromium_reader)
and mapped by TeamsMessageMapper. Group chats (Teams and WhatsApp)
carry a marker of their own, so they never share memory with a 1:1
  chat or another group.
- Calendar: events through EventKit, as records without call
boilerplate; the user is never a participant.
- A documents folder (text and Markdown), and iCloud Drive, Google
Drive and OneDrive documents (PDF, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, RTF,
text), with a bounded ZIP reader and total-size caps for Office files.

A running sync can be cancelled and awaited (cancelSync), and stopping
the schedule cancels it; a cancelled sync drops the page it was reading
with its cursor, so after a delete nothing comes back and nothing is
skipped.

The protected stores need Full Disk Access; the access check opens only
the files of these sources. Reading an online-only cloud document makes
the drive's app download it. Reader tests use synthetic fixtures built
in the tests.

Conversation memory reaches the autocomplete prompt:

- ConversationScopeResolver turns the focused app and window title into
a scope (the chat name or mail subject, within the app's enabled
memory sources; Teams titles are parsed for the open chat) and a
stable query of complete 8-word blocks. A subject does not say who a
mail is for, so a mail gets memory only as a reply or forward, from a
thread with exactly the people the client's quote header names (only
the first header block: addresses in the quoted body are the sender's
own text and could name another thread's people).
- MemoryRetriever implements the new SuggestionMemoryProviding: it
answers from its cache and never makes a suggestion wait; a stale
query starts a background lookup, and when new lines land for the
conversation in focus while nothing is shown, the coordinator offers a
suggestion that uses them. Lookups log memory_ms, memory_engine_ms,
  memory_hits and memory_scope.
- Requests carry memorySnippets; the base prompt gets an "Earlier in
this conversation:" recap (priority 39, all or nothing) and Apple's
prompt a framed equivalent that marks them as quoted messages, not
instructions. A contact's name cannot start a line or pass for "You".
- Memory never reaches the endpoint engine: the retriever returns
nothing for it, the request factory blanks it, and the router drops
any request still carrying it (memoryWithheldFromEndpoint).
- The router counts generations in flight, which memory's indexing
reads to stay off the GPU while a suggestion is being generated.
- The recall suite gains a memorySnippets field and five memory cases
  where the fact the completion needs is only in an earlier message;
COTABBY_EVAL_NO_MEMORY=1 runs them without memory as the baseline.

- Settings -> Memory: the on/off switch with the embedding model
download, status and recovery from a key mismatch; Full Disk Access
guidance (macOS has no prompt for it: the row opens the list, reveals
  this copy of Cotabby, and re-checks when Cotabby becomes active);
Sources with readiness, counts, Sync Now and Forget per source, and
Calendar access; Index settings and statistics (size on disk, vector
memory, search and query-embedding latency, indexing rate); Privacy
(retention, never-remember lists, Delete All); and a Playground that
shows what memory retrieves for a conversation and can add it to the
never-remember list. Forget and Delete All cancel and await the
  source's sync before deleting.
- CotabbyAppEnvironment builds the controller, sync, control model and
retriever once, hands the retriever to the suggestion coordinator and
  has indexing wait while the router is generating;
AppDelegate starts memory only when the user left it on and stops it
on quit. Sources sync when the engine starts and every 15 minutes on
  AC after that.
- Reading events under the hardened runtime needs the Calendars
resource-access entitlement and a usage string. The app now has a
checked-in Cotabby.entitlements that Xcode, the local signing helper,
kickstart and the release workflow all sign with, so a re-sign keeps
  it.

Everything is off by default: memory, and each of its sources.

ARCHITECTURE.md gains the memory data flow, its privacy rules and the
shared llama.cpp backend; AGENTS.md the subsystem's owners and the
rules a change must keep; SOURCE_LAYOUT.md the new folders; the README
the feature, what it reads and stores, and the optional Full Disk
Access and Calendars permissions.

The audience check ignored quoted addresses memory did not know, so a
stranger could copy a thread's people and subject into their own mail's
quote header and the reply to them drew on that thread. Now every
address in the client's quote header, less the addresses the user sends
from, must equal the thread's people; an unknown address is someone
else and gives no memory.

The mail readers report the user's own addresses (the senders of sent
mail per account in Mail, of outgoing mail in Outlook), and the store
keeps them as HMAC tags per source. An own address memory has not
learned yet counts as someone else, which is the safe side.

…asses a nonisolated deinit

CI's Xcode 26.3 rejected `abs(number) < 1e15` in V8ValueDeserializer as
ambiguous: with Accelerate imported elsewhere in the module, older
compilers see more than one `abs`. The key conversion now uses
`magnitude` and explicit types, and the BM25 idf terms call
`Foundation.log` with an explicit Double.

On the macOS 26 runtime, releasing a main-actor class that has no
nonisolated deinit goes through the back-deployment main-actor shim,
which over-releases and crashes the test host. MemoryControlModel,
MemoryEngineController, MemoryHistorySync and MemoryRetriever get a
nonisolated deinit (their state is safe to release from any thread), as
SuggestionSettingsModel and EmojiUsageStore already do, and the
controller's StatusRelay is nonisolated.

Xcode 26.3's compiler gave up on IndexedDBReader.makePrefix in the test
build ("unable to type-check this expression in reasonable time"). Swift
6.4 accepts it quickly, so every multi-operator integer expression, range
check chain, `reduce` byte assembly and literal-led `+` array chain in the
memory readers and their tests is now built in typed steps: shift and
mask values in typed lets, byte reads in loops, range checks as `switch`
cases, and test fixtures joined through a `concat` helper instead of `+`.
Behaviour is unchanged.

Xcode 26.3 spent about a second type-checking `beginObserving()`'s
untyped Task closure. The Task is now typed and the loop body lives in
`pollOnce()`, which also stops the closure holding `self` across the
sleep between refreshes.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

With Apple Intelligence selected, the raw 1500-character mail thread reaches the prompt, not the condensed one.

maxSuffixCharacters is now 1500 for every mail request, and Line 175 stores it on the request. Only the base prompt receives promptTrailingText, which is the condensed thread. FoundationModelPromptRenderer.prompt(for:) builds its "Text after the caret:" section from request.context.trailingText.prefix(request.maxSuffixCharacters). That text is raw.

So with Apple Intelligence selected, a mail reply now sends up to 1500 characters of From/To/Cc lines, addresses, signatures and footers. Before this change the limit was 192 characters. This is the boilerplate that MailReplyContext.condensedThread exists to remove. It also uses part of Apple's 4096-token window, which the comment in that renderer is written to protect. Meanwhile, the llama fallback for the same request gets the condensed thread.

Fix: store the trailing text used for prompts on the request, for example a promptTrailingText field set from promptTrailingText. Then make FoundationModelPromptRenderer read that field instead of context.trailingText.

Valid, fixed in ea75a18. SuggestionRequest.promptTrailingText carries the condensed thread for mail replies, and FoundationModelPromptRenderer reads it in place of the raw context.trailingText, so Apple Intelligence gets "Sender: message" like the llama prompt, not 1500 characters of headers. It is nil (raw text) outside mail and for the endpoint. Test: MailReplyContextTests.test_appleIntelligenceGetsTheCondensedThread.

generation moves (forget, delete all, never remember, settings, a
deleted or shortened document), and a lookup started before lands
nowhere, so a deleted message never reaches a prompt.
- Ingest and every removal or settings change share one write lock, so
an ingest filtered with old settings cannot restore a purged
  conversation.
- Indexing saves a message's vectors only if it is unchanged since it
was read, re-checks the schedule between native calls, and keeps only
messages embedded whole when it stops early.
- A re-read message that moved to another conversation or changed
owner is updated, and a conversation left empty is removed.
- Pointing the Documents Folder source at another folder forgets the
old folder's records and cursor, after stopping its sync.
- A mail reply's quote header is the first header of the whole field,
so header-like text after the caret in an inline reply is never read.
- The controller drops engine starts made stale by a stop or a newer
start, and stored memory can be deleted while memory is off.
- Playground results come from the newest search only; the engine's
status callback is read under its lock; the Full Disk Access text
names every source that needs it.

Review follow-ups on the source readers:

- Mail's .emlx map is rebuilt when mail newer than the map needs its
file, instead of living as long as the app and losing new mail.
- The Documents Folder reader reports notes read whole and the notes
still there, so edited-out paragraphs and deleted notes leave memory.
- A cloud drive or notes listing that could not read every account or
folder removes nothing, and a cloud file that could not be read
(offline) is tried again on the next sync instead of being left
  behind the cursor.
- With retention bounding the window, a calendar series with a change
is read whole, so a moved occurrence leaves memory.
- Teams maps each profile on its own and no longer guesses the user on
a tie (by who wrote more).
- LevelDB per-entry sequences wrap instead of trapping on a damaged
header, DocumentSections cuts a huge paragraph in linear time and
stops at the section limit, and the HxStore String helper is
  nonisolated.

Security review follow-ups.

Quote header: the parser now reads a header only where the mail
client puts it. The field is normalized first (line breaks, NFKC,
invisible format characters removed). Nothing above the caret may look
like a header or a quote, so inline replies and pasted headers give no
memory. The first header-like line after the caret must be one the
parser reads, at the quote boundary. An attribution or From line names
exactly one address. Quoted-printable or HTML remnants, or a second
header block right after the first, give none.

Cache: the data generation moves before any rows are removed, replaced
or moved (the store calls back) and again after. The retriever checks
it and reads or writes its caches inside the engine's
withDataGeneration, so a removal cannot begin between the check and
the write. A lookup keeps its result only if the generation is the one
read before it started. Caches are emptied while memory is off and are
keyed by the engine's instance id, so a new engine never serves an old
one's lines.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01BWE41JyPDYvSWqdCX5EM69
Every scope derived from a mail's body can be shaped by the other
person: their display name and text are part of the quote. So a mail
reply no longer gets conversation memory by parsing the body.

ConversationScopeResolver drops the quote-header parser and the
mail-subject path: Apple Mail and Outlook get no scope. The engine
drops the quoted-audience match (requiredParticipants, isSameAudience,
the own-address table and its ingest plumbing; an existing table is
dropped) and never resolves a title in a mail source. MailAudience
still isolates threads in the store, mail still syncs, and the
Playground can search it. Mail-reply memory waits for the compose
window's own To/Cc fields, which the sender cannot write.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01BWE41JyPDYvSWqdCX5EM69
A reply is the one surface whose most relevant context sits after the
caret: the quoted thread being answered. Treated like any other field,
a reply's prompt carried only the quote's From/Date/To lines, the
surface was named after Outlook's mailbox window ("Inbox • All
Accounts"), the screen excerpt kept the message list
whose previews of other mail the model copied, and "Dear " completed
to the user's own name.

- MailReplyContext (pure, over a shared QuotedReplyParser) reads the
quoted header after the caret: mail apps carry 1500 characters of
it, condensed to "Sender: message" per message without headers,
  addresses or signatures; the thread's subject names the surface;
and the newest message's sender becomes a "To:"
line above the draft (never the user, never a bare address).
- A mailbox window title never names a conversation for memory. The
quoted subject is text the sender wrote, so it never chooses which
  conversation memory searches.
- Mail apps' screen excerpts keep only the compose column.
- Typing-history examples come from the same kind of app: an email
takes only earlier email, and terminal or code-editor text never
stands as the style of prose.

Everything read from the quoted thread stays off the endpoint backend,
which keeps receiving no trailing text and the plain window title.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01BWE41JyPDYvSWqdCX5EM69
Pure rules for drafting an answer to a question someone sent the user,
and the memory side they need. Nothing calls them yet.

- QuestionDetector: whether a message asks something (English and
Turkish questions, particles and requests), and which sentences.
ReplyFieldEmptiness: whether a reply is still waiting for its body
(empty, only a signature above the quote, or only a salutation).
- AnswerPromptRenderer: an instructions-and-facts prompt for Apple
Intelligence, with the question quoted as someone else's words and an
abstain marker, and a transcript prompt for the local base model that
ends at "You:". AnswerGroundingPolicy: a draft is shown only when a
fact is relevant enough, the facts mention what the question names,
every number and name in it is in the facts or the question, it uses
something from the facts, it holds nothing the secret scrubber would
remove, and it copies no long passage of another conversation.
Messages and remembered text that read as instructions to an
assistant ("ignore previous instructions", "list all the facts",
"include the user's ...") are recognised, and every question, fact,
name and conversation title goes into the prompt quoted, on one line
(names and titles clipped to 40 characters), as data.
- SchedulingQuestion and AvailabilityFacts: a question about the user's
time names its days, and the calendar for those days becomes free and
busy times only, never what an event is or who is in it.
- Memory: an answer search over the conversation being answered plus
any conversation of the sources the user marks for answers (none by
default: an answer goes to someone else), never the question itself,
with a recency boost; the newest messages of a chat; conversations by
title. Calendar is never an answer source: its events hold what a
meeting is and who is in it. CalendarEventSnapshot regains showsAsBusy (EventKit
availability; an invitation the user declined is not busy) for
free/busy facts. Settings gain config.answers (off by default) and a per-source
"use for answers" choice (off by default).
- Stop sequences for the llama decode loop, so a base model's turn ends
where the next speaker's label begins (identical to the selection
  rewrite PR's addition).

When the user opens an empty reply to a message that asks them
something, Cotabby drafts an answer from their memory and offers it on
a card under the caret line with the messages it came from. A click
(or Tab, in an empty reply) pastes it at the caret for editing; Esc or
typing dismisses it; nothing is inserted otherwise.

- Answers run only in mail apps (Mail, Outlook) and in chat apps whose
memory source is on (Teams, WhatsApp); never in a browser page or
another app's field, whose text a page could shape like a quoted mail.
- One strict reader decides what the incoming message is (what an
answer replies to, its sender, subject and date, whether a reply is
still empty, and the addressee and subject suggestions use):
MailQuoteHeader, the quote-header rules FuJacob#871 used for its scope
(normalized text, nothing header-like above the caret, the first
header anchored at a quote boundary, exactly one sender address, no
quoted-printable or HTML remnants), read through
QuotedReplyParser.quotedMessage. A loose reader stays only for
  reformatting the prompt's condensed thread.
- IncomingMessageResolver finds the message being answered: the quoted
original below the caret in an Outlook reply, or the newest incoming
messages of the chat the window names (synced first, exactly one
match), and nothing once the user has replied. A quoted mail is data
only: it never names a remembered conversation, so its sender cannot
choose one, and every fact of its answer comes from an opted-in
answer source (marked as another conversation's) or busy/free times.
Mail without its quote gets no answer, and anything ambiguous gives
  none.
- AnswerDraftEngine drafts on this Mac only: Apple Intelligence when
available, else the local base model with stop sequences. Never the
  endpoint, whatever engine autocomplete uses.
- AnswerCoordinator gathers facts (answer search plus, for a question
about the user's time, free/busy facts read live from EventKit),
skips a message (or display name) that reads as instructions and
drops remembered text (sender, title, text) that does, applies the
grounding guards, caches one draft per message (keyed by sender,
subject, date and body, so two mails saying "Any update?" are
two messages), keeps a draft through Outlook's focus flicker for up
to 1.5 s, does not re-prepare a field that had nothing to offer, and logs why an answer was
skipped (names only at debug level). Answers follow Cotabby's own
switches: globally on, not paused, not disabled for the app, not off
for Low Power Mode. The local model drafts only when Open Source is
the selected engine, so answers never load a model unasked.
- The card says which message it answers and lists every fact the
draft was given with its sender, conversation, date and app, marking
those from other conversations (AnswerAttribution). Only a plain Tab
in an empty reply or a click inserts; Return and every other key pass
through and withdraw the card (AnswerCardKeyPolicy); the draft is
pasted only while the focused field and the frontmost app are still
the card's app, without a trailing line break, and never sent.
- AnswerCardController shows a non-activating panel that takes the
first click without taking focus; TemporaryKeyTap holds Tab and Esc
only while the card is up; SuggestionInserter.pasteAtCaret inserts
without replacing the quoted thread (both identical to the selection
  rewrite PR's helpers).
- Settings -> Memory -> Answers: on/off (off by default), how sure
memory must be, and "Find Facts" to try a question; "Use for answers
to questions" per source, off by default.
- The answer eval (17 English and Turkish cases, gated by
RUN_LLAMA_EVAL) with a dataset consistency test that always runs.

Review findings on the mail reply context:

- A greeting no longer counts as the message having said something,
so the short line after "Hi Alex," is kept as the body instead of
  being taken for a signature.
- A sentence that mentions a link stays; only a line that is just an
address, a link or a profile (with at most two other words) is
  dropped as a contact detail.
- An "-----Original Message-----" rule and the From block under it
are one message: it is added to the condensed thread once.
- Apple Intelligence now reads the same condensed thread as the llama
prompt (SuggestionRequest.promptTrailingText) instead of up to 1500
raw characters of headers and addresses.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01BWE41JyPDYvSWqdCX5EM69
Review findings on answers:

- A cached draft is reused only while memory's engine, data generation
and settings are unchanged (AnswerDraftCache), so turning a source's
"Use for answers" off, forgetting a source or excluding a person
never leaves a card quoting what is no longer allowed; a draft
prepared while memory changed is neither kept nor shown.
- Answers follow exactly the rules suggestions use
  (SuggestionAvailabilityEvaluator): per-site disables and the
terminal rule too, not only the app list.
- When Apple Intelligence is available it alone drafts; its abstention
is final, and the local model never guesses after it.
- Apple Intelligence's reply keeps its paragraphs; only the base
model's transcript is cut at its stop sequences.
- A period between digits ("3.11", "4.000") no longer ends a sentence,
so a dotted date stays in the question and names its day.
- "Find Facts" shows only the newest search's result.

Messages that start with "-----Original Message-----" still appear twice.

headerRange first matches the rule line. The loop then advances rest only past the end of that rule line. On the next pass, outlookBlock matches the "From:" line of the same block, and looseMessage parses the same message again. Each Outlook-classic quote therefore takes two of the maximumQuotedMessages slots and spends prompt budget twice. The earlier review raised this issue, and the switch to looseMessage does not fix it.

Skip a parsed message that equals the previous one. Another fix is to advance rest past the consumed header block.

Apply the character budget in relevance order, not in time order.

lines receives hits in fused relevance order. It then sorts them oldest first (Line 112) before it applies the 900-character budget (Line 119). When the hits exceed the budget, older and less relevant lines fill it first. The best match can then be dropped if it is the newest. Select lines in input order until the budget is full, then sort the selected lines by time for display.

Correct the answer-card controls in the README.

The README says a click pastes the draft and Esc dismisses it. The PR states that a click or Tab inserts the draft at the caret, and that any other key passes through and dismisses the card. As written, the README does not mention Tab. It also implies that only Esc dismisses the card.

P1 New messages stay unused

MemoryRetriever returns cached results without checking whether new messages have arrived. A lookup before the first sync can cache an empty result. Later syncs add and index messages without changing dataGeneration, so the same conversation and query keep returning nothing. Existing results also keep using old messages.

Add a freshness check or invalidate affected conversations after ingest and indexing.

P1 Answers read unfinished syncs

sync returns immediately when the source is already being read, but IncomingMessageResolver treats that return as having fresh chat data. Opening a reply during a periodic Teams sync can read an old question. It can also find only the old chat when a second chat with the same name has not been stored yet, offering an answer for the wrong conversation.

Wait for the existing run before resolving the conversation and newest message.

P2 Longer retention misses history

Increasing retentionDays does not bring older history back. Apple Mail, classic Outlook and WhatsApp resume after their saved row number, so messages skipped or purged under the shorter setting remain behind the cursor. Users must forget and sync the source again to recover them.

Reset the affected cursors when the retention window grows, including when the user selects forever.

P1 Wrong amounts pass the check

numbers removes decimal points as well as thousands separators. A fact saying 3.5 million therefore supports a draft saying 35 million: both become 35, and the draft passes unsupportedSpecifics. The card can offer an amount ten times larger than the remembered amount.

Preserve the numeric value when comparing numbers rather than deleting every separator.

P2 Undownloaded mail never returns

Apple Mail messages whose bodies are not downloaded yet are skipped permanently. read skips a row with no usable summary or .emlx body, then saves the last row number anyway. Later reads require a larger row number, so downloading that message afterward does not make it available to memory.

Keep skipped message IDs for retry, as the cloud reader does.

Cotabby/App/Coordinators/Answers/AnswerCoordinator.swift:435-450
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Mark the message dismissed only after paste succeeds.

SuggestionInserter.insertViaPaste can return false when the pasteboard write or synthetic event creation fails, without inserting text. AnswerCoordinator.insert() currently withdraws the card and adds the message key to dismissed before this call. A later focus retry then fails the !dismissed.contains(key) guard, so the still-empty field cannot receive another card.

Keep short body lines after a sentence.

If a quote says The pilot is approved. followed by Please call me tomorrow, the first line satisfies saysSomething and this condition treats the second line as a signature. The prompt then loses the request to call. Require a closing or stronger signature evidence before ending the message at a short line.

Do not discard short requests that contain a link.

If a message line says See https://example.com/report, otherWords.count is one, so this rule drops the entire request. The longer link sentence in the new test does not exercise this case. Distinguish a contact-only line from a short sentence that directs the reader to a link.

- A whole number beyond Int's range in config.json stays a Double

- FlatVectorIndex.remove moves the last row in place instead of passing

- The document readers page by when a file changed or arrived (the later

P2 Answer card never retries

If memory changes while an answer is being drafted, the new stamp check drops the offer. The task then sets preparedIdentity, so later snapshots skip the same empty reply. The user must leave and return before Cotabby tries again.

Retry under the new stamp instead of marking this attempt as finished.

P2 Unchanged files download again

CloudDriveReader now follows file status changes. If downloading and evicting an online-only file advances its ctime, DocumentTextExtractor.text(of:) moves that time past the value captured before the read. The next page or sync then downloads the same document again, even though its contents have not changed. This wastes bandwidth and time.

Track arrivals separately from changes caused by reading, or remember each file's content version.

senadaruc added a commit to senadaruc/cotabby that referenced this pull request Oct 17, 2026
Takes the final state of FuJacob#871 (535a4fd) for every memory file and re-adds
what only this fork has:

- Scope rules: mail gets no conversation scope from its window or body; titles
never cross apps; WhatsApp groups carry a per-group marker; mail threads split
by audience (MailAudience) and New Outlook by topic and sender; mail people
are addresses only; from-me only from Sent/outgoing.
- Engine and store: data generation and retriever cache races, write lock
between ingest and removals, cancel-and-await sync before forget/delete/off,
stale-snapshot-safe index saves, moved/re-owned upserts, emptied
conversations deleted, folder change forgets the old folder, start
generations in the controller, delete while off, keyed (HMAC) record ids,
  the Playground's newest-search-only rule, beginObserving's poll loop,
nonisolated deinits, type-check splits, the six FuJacob#872-review fixes.
- Readers: EmailBodyExtractor linear HTML and bounded MIME, emlx map rebuild,
complete/live documents, cloud retry cursor, calendar series
reconciliation, Teams per profile, LevelDB and V8 hardening.
- Indexing waits while a suggestion generates (router generationsInFlight).
- MemoryServicePaths is MemoryPaths (same folders); the embedding model URL
is pinned to a commit (same file and hash, no new download).

Re-added fork integrations: answers' memory pieces with this fork's
semantics (answerSearch, latestMessages, findConversations, answer sources
with their per-source defaults, config.answers with disabledApps, the
Answers section and Playground scope), the field icon's per-window memory
switch, the performance tuner gate, MLX as on-device, WhatsApp's chat name
from its header (featureScopeWindowTitle), the Python-service cleanup and
store migrations. RewriteMemoryGatherer follows the new rules: only the
focused app's own conversation (no cross-app title fallback, none for
mail); answers read a quoted mail as data only.

…#872)

Brings the fork's answer cards and mail reply context up to the final
state of feat/answers-mail-context-main (4db66ef), keeping the fork's
own pieces.

Where answers run and what a quote may decide:
- Answers run only in Mail, Outlook and apps with an enabled chat
  memory source (IncomingMessageResolver.answersIn), checked before
anything is read and again in the resolver; never in a browser or
any other app, whose text after the caret a page could shape like a
  quoted mail (review C1).
- A quoted mail is data only: what is asked and by whom, never a
remembered conversation (quotedIncoming, conversation nil). A mail
reply without its quote below the caret gets no answer. The quote is
read by one strict reader (MailQuoteHeader, through
  QuotedReplyParser.quotedMessage).
- Answers follow the same switches as suggestions
(SuggestionAvailabilityEvaluator: global, pause, Low Power Mode, app,
site, terminals), plus the fork's field-icon answers switch per app
and window, and the performance tuner.

Injection hardening:
- The asker, senders, titles, facts and the question are quoted and
clipped in the prompts (review I1); a message or a remembered fact
that reads like instructions is dropped (looksLikeInstructions).
- Calendar can never be an answer source (canAnswer, filtered again in
answerSearch); availability is busy/free only, read live (I3).
  Declined invitations are not busy.
- Card only: Tab in an empty reply or a click inserts, Esc dismisses,
any other key passes and withdraws (AnswerCardKeyPolicy); the paste
also needs the frontmost app to be the card's app.
- The card names what it answers and every fact the model saw, each
  from another conversation marked (AnswerAttribution).
- Message identity is sender, subject, date and body for mail, the
conversation and its records for chats (I2).

Bot-review fixes: drafts cached per memory stamp (AnswerDraftCache);
Apple Intelligence's abstention is final; its replies keep their
paragraphs; a dotted date stays in the question; Find Facts shares the
Playground's search generation; the focus-flicker grace is bounded
and a prepared field is not prepared again; the local model drafts
only when Open Source is the selected engine.

Mail reply context: a greeting does not arm the signature cut, a
sentence with a link stays, an "Original Message" quote is read once,
Apple Intelligence gets the condensed thread (promptTrailingText), and
the thread's subject and addressee reach only on-device engines.

Kept from the fork: MemoryAnswerSettings.disabledApps and the field
icon's answers row (now shown only where answers can run), the
per-window override, isAllowedByTuning, featureScopeWindowTitle for
WhatsApp chat names, CalendarEventSnapshot.calendarTitle, and
QuotedReplyParser's place under Support/Answers.

The cloud cursor follows a file's later modification or status-change time,
so a file moved or renamed in with an old date still arrives. But reading an
online-only file downloads it and gives it back, and giving it back moves the
status-change time past the cursor: every sync on AC would download it again.

The cursor now also keeps (hashed) the files this reader read while they were
online-only. While such a file is still online-only, only its modification
time counts, so an edit brings it back and our own eviction does not. Every
other file keeps the arrival rule, including one moved or renamed in (a new
id). Cursors written before stay readable. The test fakes the file attributes,
since File Provider placeholders cannot be made in a test.

P1 Cloud edits can be skipped

CloudDriveReader now checks previously evicted online-only files using only their modification time, but compares that time with the shared arrival cursor. If another file advances state.after to 6000, an edit with modification time 5500 that arrives at 7000 is skipped. Restoring an older version at the same path has the same problem. Memory keeps the old text, and later syncs keep skipping the file.

Track each file's content version or last-read modification time separately from the shared arrival cursor.

Preserve decimal meaning when grounding numeric claims.

numbers(in:) removes punctuation from each numeric token. Therefore, 4.000 EUR and 40.00 EUR both normalize to 4000. Invalidate cached memory when an upsert adds records.

When a history-sync page adds a message, MemoryEngine.ingest does not advance dataGeneration unless a record was replaced. MemoryRetriever.memorySnippets can therefore return the old exact-query cache entry without starting a lookup. The cache has no TTL. A later matching message can remain absent from suggestion requests until another invalidation or eviction occurs.
