A start request could resume a GameServer while a destructive wipe worker still held its volume. Keep the workload fenced until wipe Jobs and live or terminating worker pods drain, including after cancellation, request replacement, or operator restart. Record successful wipes before cleanup so a restart cannot repeat the wipe or lose automatic resume.

Reuse one worker inventory per reconciliation, refreshing it when the live GameServer identity or resource version changes. Retain uncached legacy-orphan discovery and live guard checks before workload mutation. Restore claims, foreign Jobs, and failed-worker logs keep their existing safety checks. Once the current owned wipe Job has failed and its workers have drained, remove the extra five-second retry while preserving graceful-stop deadlines and ordinary status refreshes.

Regression coverage includes concurrent starts, request replacement, orphan cleanup, restore exclusion, durable success, status preservation, inventory read counts, and failed-wipe polling.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Reliability
    • Wipe requests now suspend the GameServer and wait for active workers and pods to stop before proceeding. Failed wipes retain their status and logs for troubleshooting.
    • Restore operations wait until wipe activity is complete, reducing the risk of conflicting operations.
    • Wipe cleanup preserves the GameServer’s requested suspend or resume state.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the operational guide with the wipe and restore workflow and recovery behavior.

Walkthrough

Wipe reconciliation now uses durable guards to coordinate GameServer suspension, StatefulSet scaling, worker cleanup, and restore exclusion. The change also updates capture-status patching and related controller tests.

Changes

Wipe and restore lifecycle

Layer / File(s) Summary
Guard acquisition and workload fencing
operator/internal/controller/gameserver_controller.go, operator/internal/controller/gameserver_wipe_guard.go, operator/internal/controller/gameserver_wipe_guard_test.go, operator/internal/controller/gameserver_wipe_inventory_test.go
Reconciliation recovers wipe ownership, inventories workers, and keeps the StatefulSet at zero replicas while guards or workers remain. Tests cover identity checks, inventory reuse, guard acquisition, recovery, and concurrent StatefulSet updates.
Wipe execution and completion
operator/internal/controller/gameserver_wipe.go, operator/internal/controller/gameserver_wipe_guard_test.go, operator/internal/controller/gameserver_wipe_ownership_test.go, operator/internal/controller/gameserver_wipe_test.go
Wipe execution validates the live request before launch, labels worker resources, uses foreground Job deletion, and records success before completion acknowledgement. Tests cover cancellation, replacement, failure, worker draining, restart, and cleanup.
Restore exclusion and stale-marker recovery
operator/internal/controller/restore_lifecycle.go, operator/internal/controller/restore_release_test.go, operator/specs.md
Restore acquisition waits for wipe guards or busy workers. Tests cover stale StatefulSet markers, live blockers, and replaced identities. The specification documents guarded wipe execution and recovery.

Controller status handling and test setup

Layer / File(s) Summary
Capture status preservation and test setup
operator/internal/controller/gameserver_controller.go, operator/internal/controller/gameserver_capture_status_test.go, operator/internal/controller/gameserver_template_retry_test.go
The capture status patch uses a deep copy. Its test checks that concurrent idle-clock and heartbeat updates remain present. The template retry test registers batch API types in its fake-client scheme.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~60 minutes

Change: Bug fix

Suggested labels: type: test, type: docs

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 2cad5

The guarded wipe lifecycle appears sound. One bounded efficiency issue remains: a failed wipe keeps polling the cluster API every 5 seconds until someone cancels or replaces it. This can be addressed before or shortly after merge.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 2cad5

The change strengthens safeguards around destructive data operations. Reviewed paths preserve ownership checks, block competing operations, and delay restart until workers drain. No introduced security weakness was established, but deployment and cross-version rollback behavior remain unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — Each generated wipe Job empties the contents of the target GameServer's same-namespace, server-name-data PVC. This is destructive asset-level authority: an ownership or ordering error can destroy that server's data. The reviewed change does not expand the Job's volume selection or worker privileges relative to the supplied base.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Request tokens and power intent are inputs, not sufficient authority to start a destructive worker or resume a workload. Live GameServer UID, workload controller ownership, guard state, current request identity, and worker observations constrain those transitions. StatefulSet updates reject replacement GameServer identities and honor live guards despite stale requested replicas.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Inventory reuse is restricted to one reconcile and an exact GameServer key, UID, and resource version. Uncached worker discovery includes terminating and legacy orphan pods, preventing Job deletion alone from hiding a still-present worker. Release removes the workload marker while the durable GameServer guard is still held.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Validate mixed-version handover and downgrade with an in-flight wipe, or require wipe Jobs and workers to drain before rollback to a controller without the new guard protocol. This is a compatibility precaution, not an observed production defect.

The repeated CI failures came from the new test's scheme import colliding with the envtest suite's package-level variable. Fixed in 2cad5d52 by using clientgoscheme.

Also addressed the new polling review in fa23541f: a failed wipe drops the extra five-second retry only after the current owned Job and request token match and all workers have drained. A stale failure condition alone cannot suppress polling.
