Review size (size:exception, agreed with @barbatdev): this slice adds 1154 changed lines on top of #1922: 377 module, 530 unit tests, 247 tests against a real SessionManager session file. GitHub's Files tab shows the cumulative diff with #1918/#1919/#1922 until they merge; review only commit f48770f61.

Why it is not split further: quarantine of failed appends cannot be separated from the authority read. The authority read must exclude quarantined IDs to be correct, so a split would ship a reader that can adopt a failed "ghost" entry. The tests stay with the code because they pin the contract agreed in #1064. Lifecycle seams (fork capture / detach / attach) ship separately as slice 4b.

Summary

Part of #1064, slice 3b-i, PR 4a (append controller). Uses readSessionProfileDisk (#1922) to decide what an explicit bind/clear actually achieved.

  • createSessionProfileAppendController(source, appendEntry, options) returns bind, clear and refresh. Each returns persisted, not-persisted, append-failed-preserved or indeterminate, plus the observed state.
  • Honest preflush: an explicit operation that Pi has not flushed yet (custom-only session, no conversation, missing file) is reported as not-persisted. A later refresh upgrades it only after the exact record is on disk. Refresh never restores older unwritten branch entries.
  • Append failure: never reported as success, never adopts the failed entry. The controller keeps the last disk-corroborated state (append-failed-preserved) or reports indeterminate.
  • Quarantine: IDs of failed appends stay excluded through the reader's known-failed-ID seam, even if they reach disk later. Quarantine is scoped per session/file and survives branch changes.
  • Recovery: a new explicit bind/clear recovers only through a new, independently corroborated record. Whole-record certificates reject same-ID mutation after ambiguity.
  • Out of scope: fsync durability, history repair, external-writer/TOCTOU guarantees, lifecycle seams (4b), and UI/status/launch/Enter wiring.

Commit Change
f48770f61 lib/session-profile-append-controller.ts, tests/session-profile-append-controller.test.ts, tests/session-profile-append-controller-pi.test.ts.

Follow-up fix

Commit Change
0a681d91f An append reported as append-not-corroborated was adopted as persisted once the disk recovered, silently changing routing after Enter (#1992) reported failure. The controller now marks the scope uncertain, so only a fresh explicit, corroborated bind or clear recovers. Regression tests cover five disk faults (raised by CodeRabbit on #1992).
b6d3e8a9b Test for the post-append catch: a throwing stability recheck after a successful append is never adopted later (CodeRabbit follow-up).

Test plan

Verified on top of #1922 (4d56f74b5):

  • tests/session-profile-append-controller.test.ts + tests/session-profile-append-controller-pi.test.ts: 64 pass, 0 fail, 0 skipped. The Pi file runs against a real SessionManager from @earendil-works/pi-coding-agent in a temp directory, including EISDIR append failure, reopen and recovery.
  • node scripts/check-types.mjs: 186 recorded diagnostics, no regressions.
  • Native review (RDD): not run on this slice.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Session profile selections and cleared states can now be restored from the active session branch.
    • Persistence checks distinguish confirmed saved profiles from missing or uncertain records, and follow the selected branch when sessions are reopened or refreshed.
    • Profiles that cannot be verified against session data are reported as uncertain rather than treated as saved.
    • A profile can be confirmed as saved after session data is flushed; failed or unreadable writes remain unconfirmed until corroborated.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on session profile formats, replay behavior, and how persistence checks handle unavailable or inconsistent session data.

Part of Gentleman-Programming#1064 (slice 3b-i, codec). Standalone decoder for the
gentle-pi.session-profile/v1 custom entry: closed origin set, own-property
checks, one invalid route invalidates the whole snapshot, unknown fields
ignored, prototype keys kept as own data. No Pi API, disk access, Enter,
startup or routing changes.

Chain: main -> [this] decoder -> encoder + active-branch replay (next).
Out of scope: encoder, replay, disk-reader corroboration, Enter wiring.
…dicate

Export isSafeAgentName from model-routing-authority and use it in the
session profile decoder instead of probing normalizeModelConfig. Assert
constructor and prototype keys stay own data in the hostile-keys test.
Addresses the two CodeRabbit comments on Gentleman-Programming#1918.
Part of Gentleman-Programming#1064 (slice 3b-i, codec). Adds createSessionProfileBind and
createSessionProfileClear (explicit user selections only, typed undefined
model/thinking omitted, effort stays strict) and replaySessionProfileBranch:
the newest profile-family entry on a caller-supplied, already disk-corroborated
active branch is terminal, including invalid and unsupported, and never revives
an older binding. Still no disk access, Pi API, Enter or routing changes.

Chain: main -> decoder (previous) -> [this] encoder + replay.
Depends on: feat/1064-3b-i-1-codec-decoder.
Out of scope: disk-reader corroboration, Enter wiring, guards.
Part of Gentleman-Programming#1064 (slice 3b-i, disk reader). readSessionProfileDisk reads the
session's public active branch and JSONL file, selects the newest
profile-family entry (excluding known failed append IDs) and admits it only
when the record on disk is byte-identical; otherwise it returns one
indeterminate reason without record contents. No writes, fallback, cache,
ancestry repair or fsync; a missing file never restores a memory-only
profile. Verified against a real SessionManager session file.

Chain: main -> decoder (Gentleman-Programming#1918) -> encoder + replay (Gentleman-Programming#1919) -> [this].
Depends on: Gentleman-Programming#1919.
Out of scope: append controller, authority publication, Enter wiring.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds a v1 session-profile codec and active-branch replay helper, a read-only disk corroboration reader, and a controller for bind, clear, and refresh outcomes. Tests cover validation, persistence evidence, append failures, recovery, and branch selection.

Changes

Session profile persistence

Layer / File(s) Summary
Profile codec and branch replay
lib/session-profile-persistence.ts, lib/model-routing-authority.ts, tests/session-profile-persistence.test.ts, docs/session-profile-format.md
Adds v1 bind and clear payload encoding, validation and decoding outcomes, and replay of the newest non-absent profile-family entry on a supplied branch. Exports isSafeAgentName for shared name validation. Documents the codec and replay behavior.
Disk corroboration reader
lib/session-profile-disk-reader.ts, tests/session-profile-disk-reader.test.ts, tests/session-profile-disk-reader-pi.test.ts, docs/session-profile-format.md
Adds a synchronous reader that checks the selected branch record against session JSONL data. It returns semantic profile results when corroborated, absent when no eligible entry exists, and indeterminate when evidence is incomplete or inconsistent.
Append outcome controller
lib/session-profile-append-controller.ts, tests/session-profile-append-controller.test.ts, tests/session-profile-append-controller-pi.test.ts
Adds bind, clear, and refresh operations. The controller tracks branch and scope evidence, handles append failures, and reports persisted only when disk state corroborates the selected record.

Comment thread lib/session-profile-append-controller.ts Outdated
Address CodeRabbit review on Gentleman-Programming#1948: the controller, disk reader and
persistence codec each kept their own copy of the session-profile family
prefix check, and the controller re-implemented the reader's own-key
candidate metadata check. Export isSessionProfileFamilyEntry from the
codec and hasSessionProfileCandidateMetadata from the reader, and use
them everywhere.

Solid work on slice 4a @noxsystems. The failure quarantine modeling for ghost entries (like the EISDIR case) and the honest preflush distinction for unwritten Pi sessions are very well thought out. Running the test matrix against real SessionManager instances in temporary directories gives high confidence in the integration.

A few architectural notes to keep in mind for slice 4b:

  1. Deep branch serialization overhead in large sessions:
capture() and stable() currently perform JSON.parse(JSON.stringify(branch)) and isDeepStrictEqual(c.branch, now.branch) over the full branch. In active sessions with hundreds of turns and large tool outputs (multi-megabyte branches), running multiple synchronous deep clones and comparisons on the main thread during profile binding could cause UI frame drops. Scoping deep serialization to profile family entries and validating branch stability via leaf ID and branch length/shallow IDs would be significantly lighter.

  2. Parity between noConversation and Pi's _hasConversation():
In lib/session-profile-append-controller.ts, noConversation checks !branch.some(entry => entry.type === "message"). In Pi's SessionManager, the condition that triggers file creation is specifically:
    e.type === "message" && (e.message.role === "user" || e.message.role === "assistant").
Aligning the check to the same roles ensures not-persisted preflush state does not degrade to indeterminate if non-user/assistant message entries exist before the first prompt.

  3. scopes map lifecycle:
The module-level scopes map retains failed IDs and certified records per session without eviction. Tying cleanup to session shutdown/teardown in slice 4b will keep memory clean in long-running daemon sessions.

The core append and quarantine contracts are clear and thoroughly pinned. Approved from my side.

Labels applied: size:exception and type:feature. The cut is agreed: the quarantine cannot ship apart from the authority read without a reader that could adopt a ghost entry, and the tests pin the contract agreed on #1064, so they stay with the code.

Same call for 4b: ~376 lines of code are under budget and the fork tests are the direct evidence that makes the slice independently reviewable, so the exception covers that one too. Please carry the justification in its description like you did here.

One note for anyone reading the Files tab: the cumulative diff includes #1918/#1919/#1922 until they land, so the slice to review is commit f48770f.

An append reported as append-not-corroborated was adopted as persisted once
the disk recovered, silently changing routing after Enter reported failure.
The controller now marks the scope uncertain so only a fresh explicit,
corroborated bind or clear recovers.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Add coverage for the final append-not-corroborated catch.

The existing tests cover the non-throwing branch. The throw-oriented tests either fail before append, throw from appendEntry, or enter the failed-append branch. No test makes authority(after, s) or stable(after) throw after a successful append. Add that case, then assert that a later refresh() does not adopt the record after disk recovery. Without this test, the catch can regress without detection.

Covered in b6d3e8a. The new test makes the post-append stability recheck throw after a successful append while the disk stays sound, checks that the result is append-not-corroborated and that a later refresh() does not adopt the record, and that a fresh explicit bind still recovers. Removing s.uncertain = true from the catch makes it fail.
