Summary

  • The payload signature was computed over the gzip-compressed wire body, but the server verifies the HMAC after decompressing, so every request large enough to trigger compression was rejected as signature-invalid. The signature now always covers the uncompressed body, matching the server contract and all four agent ports (Go, PHP, Rust, TypeScript).
  • Fixes the version drift left by 3.0.1: pyproject.toml said 3.0.1 while guard_agent/_version.py (User-Agent + agent_version on every batch) was still 3.0.0. Both are now 3.0.2 and a new consistency test (tests/test_version_consistency.py) fails if they diverge again.
  • Widens the deprecated fastapi-guard-agent shim pin from guard-agent>=2.0.0,<3.0.0 to >=3.0.0,<4.0.0 (shim 1.3.0), so installs through the alias stop resolving to 2.x. Shim publishes manually via release-shim.yml after this release.

Test plan

  • New regression tests: signature equals HMAC over the uncompressed body when compression applies (unit + end-to-end through send_events), on both POST paths.
  • Full suite: 529 passed, 2 skipped, 100% coverage. ruff/mypy clean.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Fixed signature verification for gzip-compressed requests by signing the uncompressed payload.
  • Updates
    • Updated the agent to version 3.0.2 and the FastAPI compatibility package to version 1.3.0, which now supports agent versions 3.x.
    • Updated the documentation version listing to 3.0.2.

The payload signature was computed over the gzip-compressed wire body,
but the server verifies the HMAC after decompressing, so every request
large enough to trigger compression was rejected as signature-invalid.
The signature now always covers the uncompressed body, matching the
server contract and all four agent ports.

Also fixes the _version.py drift left by 3.0.1 (agent_version reported
3.0.0 on 3.0.1 installs) with a consistency test, and widens the
deprecated fastapi-guard-agent shim pin to guard-agent 3.x (shim 1.3.0).

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The 3.0.2 release changes payload signing for compressed requests, synchronizes package versions, updates the deprecated shim’s dependency range, and adds release notes and documentation version mappings.

Changes

Guard Agent 3.0.2 release

Layer / File(s) Summary
Sign the uncompressed payload
guard_agent/_transport_dispatch.py, tests/test_transport.py
_build_post_body signs the uncompressed payload before optional gzip compression. Both encrypted and unencrypted POST paths use it. Tests check the generated signature and the send path.
Synchronize package versions
pyproject.toml, guard_agent/_version.py, tests/test_version_consistency.py
The project and agent versions are set to 3.0.2. A test checks that the versions match.
Update shim compatibility
shim/pyproject.toml, shim/README.md
The shim version changes to 1.3.0, and its guard-agent dependency range changes to >=3.0.0,<4.0.0.
Publish 3.0.2 release metadata
CHANGELOG.md, docs/release-notes.md, .mike.yml, docs/versions/versions.json
The changelog and release notes document the release changes. The documentation version mappings add 3.0.2 and set latest to 3.0.2.

The release notes need a real heading, and encrypted compressed requests need a regression test for their signature. These are bounded follow-ups; no current request failure has been established.

Replace the placeholder release title.

TITLE (v3.0.2) is a placeholder. Replace it with a descriptive heading, such as Payload signatures now cover the uncompressed body (v3.0.2).

Cover signature verification on the encrypted send path.

The added test does not configure project_encryption_key, so it does not exercise encrypted routing. The existing encrypted tests do not assert X-Payload-Signature against the decompressed body. A regression limited to _post_encrypted could therefore pass.

Add an encrypted send_events test with compression enabled and assert the HMAC over gzip.decompress(content).
