Fixes #67

Adds dependabot.yml and the shared auto-merge workflow from HappyHackingSpace/actions@v1. Majors stay for review.

Replaces the old Dependabot auto-merge workflow.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • Dependency update pull requests now have a three-day cooldown, and minor and patch updates are grouped together. The weekly update schedule remains unchanged.
    • Dependabot pull requests receive automated handling when opened, updated, or reopened.

Walkthrough

Dependabot update settings now use three-day cooldowns and group minor and patch updates. A pull request workflow calls the reusable auto-merge workflow when the PR author is dependabot[bot].

Layer / File(s) Summary
Dependabot update policy
.github/dependabot.yml
The gomod and github-actions configurations add three-day default cooldowns and group minor and patch updates. The weekly schedule remains unchanged.
Dependabot pull request workflow
.github/workflows/auto-merge.yml, .github/workflows/dependabot.yaml
The prior auto-merge workflow is removed. The new workflow runs for opened, synchronized, or reopened pull requests and calls the reusable auto-merge workflow only when the author is dependabot[bot]. It grants the specified checks, statuses, contents, and pull requests permissions.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to c3bf8

Pin the external workflow ref; the potential impact of a changed tag depends on the repository’s Dependabot token setting.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to c3bf8

The new workflow introduces an external dependency into automated merging. Its inspected implementation has meaningful safeguards, including actor verification, separated permissions, major-version exclusion, and head-commit matching. Effective write access depends on repository settings, which were not established.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · inferred: Merge execution now depends on externally maintained code selected by @v1. An unauthorized upstream ref or workflow change could execute with repository contents and pull-request write authority when repository settings permit those permissions. The prior local workflow did not delegate this authority to that external reference.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated authority at risk concerns the caller repository's contents and pull requests, not demonstrated organization-wide or deployment authority. Requested writes are not proof of effective writes: earlier documentation inspection identified Dependabot token restrictions, and the repository's write-token setting remains unknown.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The retained mutable-reference finding introduces an upstream-authority attack path: control over the selected upstream code could replace merge-policy enforcement or misuse the available token. This requires upstream compromise or equivalent ref-update authority and effective caller permissions; it is not evidence that an arbitrary pull-request author can obtain write access.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The caller retains the base's two write-permission categories and adds checks/statuses reads. Although its local condition checks only PR authorship, the inspected upstream metadata job additionally requires the Dependabot event actor. That downstream guard counters the apparent expansion to human-triggered unattended merges, but remains dependent on the externally selected implementation.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The inspected job dependencies, waiter failures/timeouts, and head-match guard constrain failed or stale merge attempts. However, the waiter checks only returned checks/statuses and can accept an empty set when compatibility checking is reported complete; it does not enforce an expected check roster. No explicit concurrency or post-merge recovery is defined in the inspected workflow. Required-check enforcement, merge-queue behavior, and interruption or repeated-run outcomes remain unverified rather than established vulnerabilities.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Pin the reusable workflow and its security-sensitive transitive actions to reviewed immutable commits. Independently enforce the intended repository checks through branch protection so merge-policy guarantees do not depend solely on upstream workflow code or the checks visible to its waiter.

Explanation

Issue #67 requires Dependabot updates and auto-merge of patch and minor updates after compatibility checks. .github/dependabot.yml enables weekly Go module and GitHub Actions updates and groups minor and patch updates. .github/workflows/dependabot.yaml calls HappyHackingSpace/actions/.github/workflows/dependabot-auto-merge.yaml@v1 for Dependabot pull requests. The repository evidence does not establish whether that reusable workflow waits for compatibility checks or leaves major updates for review.

Pin the reusable workflow to a full commit SHA.

The @v1 reference can select changed workflow code. This workflow runs for Dependabot pull requests and grants contents: write and pull-requests: write. Pin the reference so a tag change cannot replace code that receives these permissions.
