The app has no way to count usage, and any counting must collect no personal information.

  • Plausible is configured by PLAUSIBLE_DOMAIN. If it is unset, the script isn't loaded and no events are sent.
  • Pageviews and unique visitors come from Plausible's cookieless script, loaded by public/index.js via /api/analytics.
  • Import / Export (result: success|failure) and Persona Selected (persona: Lookup|Grieve|Manage) are sent server-side to the Plausible Events API (services/analytics.py). Payloads are built from an allow-list, so anything else (content, file names, user input) is rejected. The visitor's User-Agent and IP are passed through to Plausible for its rotating hash and are never logged or stored by the app.
  • Sends run in a background thread with a 2s timeout and every error is swallowed, so analytics never breaks or slows a user action.
  • PRIVACY.md gets an Analytics section; the app's Knowledge Base page already links PRIVACY.md.

What changes for the app: with PLAUSIBLE_DOMAIN set (e.g. as a Space variable), anonymous usage counts appear in Plausible. Without it, nothing changes.

Closes #796
Closes #797

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added optional analytics for page visits, conversation imports and exports, and persona or mode selections, including import and export outcomes. Tracking can be configured and does not send conversation content or referrers.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the privacy notice to explain how analytics uses IP addresses and browser information to generate a daily rotating hash. Page addresses exclude query strings; analytics data is hosted in the EU and is not stored by the app.

The change adds optional Plausible analytics configuration, pageview reporting, and allow-listed events for persona selections and session imports or exports. It also adds event call sites, tests, and a privacy-policy disclosure.

Changes: Plausible analytics

Layer / File(s) Summary
Analytics event validation and delivery
app/services/analytics.py, app/tests/test_analytics.py
Adds validation for supported events and properties, builds event payloads and visitor headers, and sends requests in background tasks. Tests cover payload restrictions, disabled tracking, failures, and background delivery.
Persona and session event call sites
app/main.py, app/services/persistence.py, app/tests/test_analytics.py
Records persona selections and session import or export outcomes. Persistence tests check success and failure events.
Browser configuration and privacy disclosure
app/middleware/cookies.py, app/public/index.js, PRIVACY.md
Adds /api/analytics to provide the configured domain, posts pageviews to Plausible when a domain is present, and documents analytics collection and data handling.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 95da6

Pageview delivery is improved, but visitor counts can still be distorted where forwarding headers are not sanitized. This is a bounded risk to confirm with the deployment owner.

Explanation

The changes satisfy the coding requirements in #796 and #797. PLAUSIBLE_DOMAIN disables all analytics when unset. The client sends cookieless pageviews without query strings or referrers. app/services/analytics.py allow-lists the required events and enumerated properties, forwards visitor headers without app storage, and sends events in a bounded background executor with a two-second timeout. Import/export and persona tracking are wired in the application. app/tests/test_analytics.py covers payload exclusions, disabled analytics, failure handling, nonblocking behavior, and event wiring. PRIVACY.md documents the counted data, anonymity limits, no app storage, and EU hosting.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The reviewed changes remain within #796 and #797. The route and client code implement optional Plausible pageviews. The analytics service and application wiring implement the required custom events. The tests and PRIVACY.md changes support those requirements. No unrelated change is demonstrated by the reviewed evidence.

🟡 Changes recommended

Browser tracking can transmit sensitive URL data, and analytics requests can delay chat retrieval through shared executor contention.

Track Persona Selected only when the persona changes.

on_settings_update runs when the user confirms the settings form. Confirming the form without changing Persona submits the same value, but the current handler records another selection. This overcounts persona selections. Compare the previous session value before tracking.
