Add a native permutation of one-dimensional variable-length entries that keeps the stored capacity static and is faster than cuDF take on CUDA, eager and compiled.
Description of the change
_permute_entries reorders entries within the input's stored capacity; elements after the final offset are zero. The CUDA string sort in #1272 uses it to reorder sorted strings. Public indexing is unchanged, and stride-zero views keep ordinary indexing.
Compiled and non-CUDA execution: non-empty entries are ranked so their ends strictly increase, which bounds the candidates of each 64-element window. Seven binary-search steps then find each element's entry. Inductor fuses this into one kernel with no host synchronization, and the graph is reused across input sizes.
Eager CUDA: 32-element output tiles are copied from the entry owning their first element, entries of at least 32 elements rewrite their first 32 elements, and shorter entries are copied element by element. This reads entry counts from the device once, as ordinary indexing already does. Inputs averaging fewer than 32 elements per entry use element-wise copying only.
The two paths stay separate: a single tiled path for both was 2.7x slower in eager execution on 1M URLs and used up to 2.9x the memory.
Validation
One NVIDIA L4, PyTorch 2.14.1+cu130, cuDF 26.10.02. Random permutation, warm medians, compilation excluded, compiled with dynamic shapes. Peaks are per call and include the output (Torch allocator for native, RMM for cuDF). Strings have 5% nulls. All outputs match cuDF exactly.

At 40k rows, cuDF takes 1.8–2.0 ms, native eager 0.5–1.2 ms and native compiled 0.2–0.3 ms. Randomized checks (empty and null entries, int32 and int64 offsets, sliced and strided views) match ordinary indexing in eager and compiled execution.
Additional details
Native peaks exceed cuDF by 2–6 MiB for byte-heavy inputs; this is per-entry search state when compiled and bounded copy blocks in eager. Larger search windows saved at most 3 MiB at a 10–25% compiled time cost, so they are not used.

Variable-length string tensors can now select entries using negative, repeated, and empty index lists, including across sliced, strided, and broadcast layouts.
Selection preserves validity information and supports empty payloads and entries with payload bytes marked as null.
Bug Fixes
Selection now handles bounded storage capacity limits and retains compatibility across CPU and CUDA devices.
The change adds _select_entries for variable-length tensors. It normalizes negative indices, gathers selected values into bounded storage, and falls back to indexed selection when the computed capacity exceeds the offset dtype’s maximum. Tests cover device, layout, metadata, compilation, and payload edge cases.

Summary
Selection implementation and validation sdm/tensor/var_len.py, test/tensor/test_var_len.py
Adds _select_entries with bounded storage, zero-padding, validity-mask selection, and a fallback for capacity overflow. Tests compare results with indexed selection across devices and layouts, and check compilation, metadata, empty payloads, and null entries.
Selection of bool-valued tensors can change their dtype and increase memory use. Fix and test this bounded case before merging.

where(used, 0) changes the output dtype for torch.bool payloads.
VarLenTensor.from_arrow and from_list accept torch.bool data. Tensor.where(cond, 0) with a Python int scalar uses type promotion. A bool tensor combined with an int scalar promotes to torch.int64.
For bool input, _select_entries therefore builds the output with int64 data. VarLenTensor.ALLOWED_DTYPES is None, so the constructor does not reject this. The result has a different dtype from inp[index]. The output also uses 8x the storage per element.
The new tests only cover uint8 string payloads, so this path is not exercised. Use masked_fill, which preserves dtype. Add a bool VarLenTensor case to the tests.
Proposed fix
- data = inp._data[source].where(used, 0)+ data = inp._data[source].masked_fill(~used, 0)

Update _select_entries to zero unused entries with a dtype-preserving masked
operation so bool payloads retain their dtype, and add a bool VarLenTensor test
that verifies the selected output dtype and values.
