fix(merge-driver): keep published ids when a branch merges the default branch in (0.31.1) - #34
The merge driver always kept OURS's ids and renumbered THEIRS's new records onto the end. That is right when the default branch merges a feature branch in. When a feature branch merges the default branch in (git merge origin/main), OURS is the feature branch, so records already published on main got new ids and every citation of them (code comments, docs, other branches) pointed at the wrong record. This shuffled d4-d18 and swapped q1/q2 in nimble-fox-ai/nimblefox #176 and #177, and shifted f12-f16 in features.jsonl.
Rule
When the commit being merged is reachable from the default branch and HEAD is not, the driver swaps roles: THEIRS's records keep their ids, OURS's new records are renumbered after them with citations rewritten, and the result is written to the OURS path. The docket: old -> new lines on stderr still name the records that moved.
The merged commit comes from the GITHEAD_<sha> variable that git merge sets for drivers. MERGE_HEAD is not written until after the drivers run.
The default branch is origin/HEAD, then origin/main, origin/master, main, master.
With none of those, or under rebase, cherry-pick or an octopus merge, behaviour is unchanged: OURS keeps its ids.
Tests
New git-level tests cover a branch merging main in (main's ids kept, branch records renumbered with supports rewritten), main merging a branch in (unchanged), a second merge of main, the stderr report, and the no-default-branch fallback, for the ledger and for features.jsonl. just test passes (the web suite was skipped: no node_modules), and ruff and pyrefly are clean.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Merging the default branch now preserves IDs for records and features already on that branch. New records and features from the merging branch receive fresh IDs, with linked record references updated accordingly.
Repeated merges preserve the default branch’s IDs. When a default branch cannot be identified, the current branch’s IDs remain unchanged.
Documentation
Updated branch-merging guidance to describe how IDs are handled during these merges.
…t branch in
The driver always kept OURS's ids and renumbered THEIRS's new records. For a branch merging the default branch in, that renumbered records already published on the default branch and broke every citation of them. When the merged commit is reachable from the default branch and HEAD is not, the driver now keeps THEIRS's records, renumbers OURS's new ones after them, and writes the result to the OURS path. Without a findable default branch, or outside git merge, behaviour is unchanged.

Walkthrough
The merge driver detects when an incoming commit is reachable from the default branch while HEAD is not. For that merge, it processes the incoming side first and copies its bytes before appending the merge tail. Tests and documentation cover ID handling and fallback cases.

Summary
Detect and apply published-side ordering docket/merge_driver.py
The merge driver checks merge metadata and ancestry. When the incoming commit is published on the default branch and HEAD is not, it processes THEIRS first for feature and ledger data, then copies THEIRS’ bytes to the OURS path before appending the merge tail.
Verify merge ID handling tests/test_merge_driver.py, docs/maintenance.md, CHANGELOG.md
Integration tests cover ledger and feature IDs, linked-record references, repeated merges, and cases without a detected default branch. The documentation describes the ID behavior and fallback cases.

Resolve the published-ID mismatch and unsafe copy paths before merging. A merge can leave citations identifying different records or produce an unreadable ledger. Feature references also require an explicit remap after renumbering.

Add a test for a branch that merges a non-tip commit from main.
The new merge tests only merge main's tip. A branch that merges an earlier commit reachable from main is not covered. A change that accepts only the tip, in _on_default, would pass the current suite. Add a case that merges such a commit and asserts the IDs the driver keeps.

Add a ledger-cited feature to the branch-merges-main feature test.
test_a_branch_merging_main_in_keeps_main_feature_ids asserts only feature IDs and slugs. Its diverge_features helper creates no ledger claim and no include. The stale-citation path after a ledger renumbering is therefore untested in this direction. Mirror the existing check in the main-merges-branch test: add a topic claim that the feature includes, then assert docket check reports c2 -> c3 and that docket feature remap yields ["c3"].

Clear GITHEAD_ inherited values before the operation check in _merged_commit.
_merged_commit treats any single GITHEAD_<sha> variable as proof of a plain git merge. The variable is inherited, and nothing removes it. A cherry-pick or rebase that runs inside a parent git merge process can therefore inherit one. If the commit it names is on the default branch and HEAD is not, run() swaps the sides. The current branch's new records are then renumbered and their citations rewritten. The docs say this must not happen under rebase or cherry-pick. Confirm that the operation is a merge before reading GITHEAD_*, or reject a variable that the operation did not set.

Limit the published-ID swap to commits whose file carries published IDs.
Reachability from the default branch does not show that the merged file has published IDs. A feature commit that main already merged can predate main's renumbering. The swap then keeps its stale IDs and renumbers this branch's records, so c3 names a different record than on main.

Rewrite feature references when a merge renumbers the records they cite.
When a feature branch merges the default branch, its records are renumbered (for example c2 to c3). The feature store keeps the old include and exclude ids. The merge exits 0. docket feature show then prints the id of the default branch's record until docket feature remap runs.

Strip a torn final line from the swapped copy before appending.
When a feature branch merges the default branch in, run() copies the default-branch ledger to the OURS path with shutil.copyfile(theirs, ours). That copy keeps any torn final line. If the merge also appends OURS's new records, the append adds a newline after the fragment. The fragment becomes an interior line that ledger.read rejects as invalid JSON. run() still returns 0, so Git stages the broken file.
Write the prefix that ledger.read keeps, without the torn fragment, instead of copying the raw bytes. Apply the same fix to the OURS-side path, which already has this defect.

Build the swapped result in a temporary file before replacing OURS.
When swap is true, shutil.copyfile(theirs, ours) truncates OURS before it writes. A write error leaves OURS with partial THEIRS content and without its own records. The new sentence states that default-branch records keep their IDs. The driver finds the default branch only from origin/HEAD, origin/main, origin/master, main or master. With a trunk default branch and none of these refs, the driver can renumber its records. Name the refs in this paragraph.

The driver leaves a conflict when both sides superseded the same record, when a cherry-picked record cites one the target lacks, or when a file does not read. A clone without the driver registered also gets an ordinary conflict. Combining the lines by hand does not resolve it; use `docket rebase` to give the incoming records new IDs and update their links.

Problem
The merge driver always kept OURS's ids and renumbered THEIRS's new records onto the end. That is right when the default branch merges a feature branch in. When a feature branch merges the default branch in (
git merge origin/main), OURS is the feature branch, so records already published on main got new ids and every citation of them (code comments, docs, other branches) pointed at the wrong record. This shuffled d4-d18 and swapped q1/q2 in nimble-fox-ai/nimblefox #176 and #177, and shifted f12-f16 infeatures.jsonl.Rule
When the commit being merged is reachable from the default branch and HEAD is not, the driver swaps roles: THEIRS's records keep their ids, OURS's new records are renumbered after them with citations rewritten, and the result is written to the OURS path. The

New git-level tests cover a branch merging main in (main's ids kept, branch records renumbered with
