What this does

Graduation ceremonies use classrooms that the occupancy data still lists as free, so on those days a campus's rooms may be taken whatever the schedule says. This ports PoliAule's graduation day notice. It warns the user when a selected campus has graduation on the selected day. That covers today and days picked ahead in the date strip.

Backend

The data comes from PoliMi's "Periodi di lezione e sessioni di laurea" PDF, linked from https://www.polimi.it/studenti/calendari-e-scadenze. It has three parts, all carried over from PoliAule:

  • Scraper (scripts/fetch_graduation_sessions.py): finds the PDF links on the page and reads the "Sessioni di laurea" table. It doesn't rely on file names, page numbers or column order, because PoliMi changes them without notice.
    • Each row is classified by content: the date cell, the level cell, the campus cell.
    • The campus cell is split on + ("Milano + discussione Design"). Each part is resolved against the primary campuses in data/classrooms.json, so a new campus there is picked up without touching the scraper.
    • Validation: weekdays must match the printed dates, dates must fall in the academic year, and each document needs a minimum number of rows. If anything fails, it exits non-zero and leaves the last good data/graduation-sessions.json untouched.
    • Upcoming sessions of an academic year the page no longer links are carried over from the previous output until they pass.
  • Workflow (fetch-graduation-sessions.yml): runs monthly, since the PDF changes once or twice a year. It restores the previous output from R2, scrapes, uploads to the stable and beta buckets, and purges the API cache. It notifies Telegram only on anomalies.
  • Route (/v1/graduation-sessions): the API worker serves graduation-sessions.json from R2 like the other data files.

Output shape, one entry per graduation day:

{
  "date": "2026-10-21",
  "levels": ["magistrale"],
  "campuses": ["MIA01", "MIA06", "MIB01", "MIB02"],
  "campus_parts": []
}

The client only reads date and campuses.

pdfplumber is added to requirements.txt, and data/graduation-sessions.json is gitignored like the other generated data.

The client still reads PoliAule's hosted endpoint, which already serves this data. The new route and workflow take effect once the backend is detached. The workflow reuses PoliAule's R2 bucket names and Cloudflare zone, and needs the same secrets.

Client

  • state/graduation.ts: fetches the sessions once at startup, in parallel with occupancy and without blocking it. It keeps only upcoming days, indexed by date and campus. A failed fetch is logged and nothing is marked, and reloadOccupancy retries it. The store has a graduationRevision counter so components re-render when the data arrives.
  • Banner on the results pane: an info notice appears when any selected campus graduates on the selected day (Graduation day at Leonardo). It names the campuses and says rooms may be taken even if they show as free. It uses a new info tone on Notice in the app's accent colour.
  • Date strip: a small laurel marks days where a selected campus graduates, with a tooltip and screen-reader label.
  • Campus picker: a laurel after the campus name marks campuses graduating on the selected day, through a new optional badge on menu options.
  • Classroom page: a note under the room's status lists the graduation days at its campus among the days the schedule shows.
  • English and Italian strings are included.

Screenshots

A banner is displayed in the main page, above the available classrooms results, since classrooms appear free without occupations on that day:

An icon is displayed near each campus in the Campus Picker, showing where the graduation is on the selected day:

A small laurel icon is also displayed on the date picker's cell if any of the selected campus has a graduation event on that date:

Another banner is also displayed in the details page for a classroom if its campus has a graduation within the displayed dates. This is shown for the entire week prior to the graduation date, so the layout doesn't shift when changing the date displayed in the occupation graph. Because of that, the banner also displays the date in which the graduations will occur:

Walkthrough

The change adds a pipeline to collect and publish graduation-session data, an API endpoint and client state to retrieve it, and localized graduation indicators in date, campus, results, and classroom views.

Changes

Graduation sessions

Layer / File(s) Summary
Scrape and validate sessions
scripts/fetch_graduation_sessions.py, requirements.txt, .gitignore
The scraper discovers graduation-session PDFs, parses and validates their contents, carries forward future sessions, and writes JSON. The dependency and ignore rule support this output.
Publish and serve session data
workers/api/src/routes/graduation-sessions.ts, workers/api/src/index.ts, .github/workflows/fetch-graduation-sessions.yml
The API serves session JSON from R2. The workflow restores prior data, runs the scraper, uploads results to production and beta buckets, notifies on scrape failures or non-ok status, and purges both API caches.
Load sessions into application state
src/app/state/graduation.ts, src/app/state/store.ts, src/app/boot.ts, src/app/state/graduation.test.ts
The application loads sessions, indexes them by date and campus, excludes past dates, and exposes lookup helpers. Startup triggers loading, and tests cover matching and campus filtering.
Display graduation indicators
src/app/home/*, src/app/classroom/classroom-page.tsx, src/app/ui/notice.tsx, src/app/ui/popup.tsx, public/locales/en.json, public/locales/it.json
Date and campus controls mark graduation days. Results and classroom views show localized notices when applicable. Notice styling and accessible menu badges support these indicators.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 4844d

A transient failure when restoring the previous graduation data could cause the monthly job to publish a file missing carried-over sessions, so some graduation notices would disappear. The workflow also leaves git credentials on disk during dependency installs. Both are small fixes to make before or soon after merge. The rest of the change looks sound.
