Bug fix.

What this PR does / why we need it:

Adds a platform-side, Pod-aware reconciler for vNPUs left behind when container creation fails. The implementation is independent of Ascend Docker Runtime changes.

  • Adds a node-scoped Kubernetes Pod snapshot with direct API validation, informer synchronization, and kubelet checkpoint checks.
  • Treats unknown data as fail-closed; checkpoint entries protect healthy or unknown Pods, while explicit container failure states remain candidates behind the grace period. Terminal Pods are not kept alive by stale checkpoint entries, and stale checkpoint protection is filtered to Ascend resources and scoped to cards when device IDs can be mapped.
  • Reclaims only idle vNPUs on a card with no protected or unknown Pod claim.
  • Requires a 10-minute grace period and three consecutive confirmations by default.
  • Tracks container failure timestamps when available; unknown OCI create-failure timestamps use the reconciler's stable first observation.
  • Uses the same safe reconciler for startup, kubelet restart, SIGHUP, and periodic cleanup.
  • Removes the old unscoped manager cleanup path.
  • Preserves retry progress when only part of a card's orphaned vNPUs are destroyed.

Which issue(s) this PR fixes:

Fixes #138

Special notes for your reviewer:

  • The first implementation is deliberately L0/card-scoped. L1 count-overage heuristics and exact VDevID ownership are not enabled because the current allocation metadata cannot safely identify which same-template VDevID belongs to which Pod.
  • Ascend Docker Runtime is outside this repository's modification scope; this PR provides the device-plugin-side recovery path without requiring runtime rollback.
  • The periodic cleanup flag now defaults to enabled, while remaining available as an emergency disable switch.
  • The reconciler is covered by regression tests for unknown failure timestamps, stale candidate timestamps, grace-period enforcement, protected Pods, and partial destroy retry.

Validation:

  • go build ./cmd/... ./internal/... ./version/...
  • go vet ./internal/cleanup/... ./internal/server/... ./cmd/...
  • TMPDIR=/tmp/t go test ./cmd/... ./internal/... ./version/...
  • The cleanup logic is resource-name and driver-interface generic across Ascend 310P, 910A, 910B2/B3/B4, and 910C configurations; real hardware validation for each available family remains pending because no local NPU test environment is available.

Does this PR introduce a user-facing change?:

Yes. The device plugin now enables the safe periodic orphan-vNPU reconciler by default. Users can disable it temporarily with --enable_periodic_idle_vnpu_cleanup=false.

AI Disclosure:

Codex assisted with the implementation, tests, documentation, and this pull request description. The final code and validation results were reviewed before submission.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Idle vNPU cleanup is enabled by default, with a 10-minute grace period and three consecutive safe observations required before reclaiming devices.
    • Cleanup checks Kubernetes pod and device allocation state to protect active workloads and uncertain allocations.
    • Checkpoint-only allocations remain protected until confirmed stale.
    • Cleanup confirmation state resets when the plugin server starts or restarts.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Cleanup failures are reported while allowing other eligible devices to be checked.

📝 Walkthrough

Periodic idle-vNPU cleanup now uses Kubernetes Pod allocation snapshots and confirmation-gated reconciliation. Startup enables cleanup by default, configures a 10-minute grace period and three confirmations, and resets cleanup state on restart.

Changes: Pod-aware idle vNPU cleanup

Layer / File(s) Summary
Cleanup contracts and device operations
internal/cleanup/types.go, internal/manager/manager.go, internal/manager/manager_test.go, internal/server/fake_manager_test.go
The cleanup package defines claim, snapshot, reconciliation, and hardware contracts. The manager lists virtual-device state and destroys a specified virtual device instead of performing bulk idle cleanup. Tests cover cleanup filters and updated fake-manager hooks.
Kubernetes allocation snapshot
internal/cleanup/snapshot_kubernetes.go, internal/cleanup/snapshot_kubernetes_test.go
KubernetesPodSnapshot combines node Pod data with kubelet checkpoint data, maps allocations to cards, and classifies claims. Tests cover Pod mapping, checkpoint handling, stale entries, and resource recognition.
Confirmation-gated reconciliation
internal/cleanup/confirmation.go, internal/cleanup/reconciler.go, internal/cleanup/reconciler_test.go
The reconciler validates snapshots, skips protected, ignored, or used virtual devices, and destroys eligible idle devices only after confirmation and grace-period checks. Tests cover timing, resets, retries, errors, and Pod classification.
Startup and plugin-server integration
cmd/main.go, internal/server/server.go, internal/server/server_test.go
Startup creates the Kubernetes snapshot and reconciler, attaches the reconciler to PluginServer, enables periodic cleanup by default, and resets cleanup state on restart. PluginServer invokes the reconciler and reports its results.
Go toolchain download retries
Dockerfile
The Go archive download adds retry, wait, timeout, and selected HTTP-status retry options.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to e16d4

The previously identified cleanup and startup risks are addressed at the reviewed head. No outstanding issue prevents merging after normal checks.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 89784

The change substantially strengthens ownership checks before reclaiming shared accelerator resources. However, automatic cleanup becomes enabled by default, and a timing gap remains between validation and deletion that could affect recovering workloads. The underlying deletion safeguards are not established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Default-on reclamation retains a non-atomic observation-to-destruction boundary. Hardware-idle candidates are cached before the final ownership snapshot, then destroyed without rechecking hardware use or synchronizing with allocation. A concurrent retry or recovery could therefore lose its device if the native driver does not independently reject destruction. The race class predates this PR, but periodic exposure is newly enabled by default.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The destructive path targets locally enumerated devices by logical ID and vNPU ID. A reclamation error could affect workloads sharing the affected cards on that node. Conversely, an unmappable relevant Pod record blocks cleanup across the node, not merely its presumed card. Cluster-wide Pod read authority does not itself make destruction cross-node.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The unresolved availability path is concurrent workload recovery or allocation after candidate observation or final ownership validation, followed by destruction using cached IDs. Workload activity can influence this timing, but native acceptance of an active-device destroy, ID reuse, and deliberate exploitation are not verified. Ownership appearing before the final snapshot is explicitly blocked by the inspected regression test.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Pod metadata and status cross into privileged hardware-reclamation decisions through UUID-to-card resolution. Direct node-scoped API listing, informer synchronization, checkpoint validation, protected/unknown claims, and repeated ownership checks constrain that authority. Checkpoint interpretation filters Ascend resources and scopes stale protection to mapped cards when possible.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Unknown initial or final snapshots abort destruction and clear reclamation progress. Newly observed vNPUs receive their own grace period. Constructor and lifecycle resets discard prior in-memory eligibility, preventing restart from immediately inheriting old confirmations.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Establish and document a conditional destruction contract coordinated with allocation, including expected device identity and usage state. Define retry behavior for ambiguous outcomes and ID reuse. If the native driver already enforces these guarantees, verify that contract before relying on default-on cleanup.

Explanation

The PR meets the coding requirements in [#138]. KubernetesPodSnapshot validates node Pods through the API, informer state, and kubelet checkpoint data. Unknown mappings and unavailable snapshots fail closed. Reconciler requires idle driver state, no protected or unknown card claim, a 10-minute grace period, and three confirmations before destruction. It rechecks ownership before destruction and preserves retry progress after partial destroy failures. Startup, restart, SIGHUP, and periodic cleanup use the reconciler. OCI runtime rollback is outside this repository's scope.

Addressed the two outstanding P1 findings in commit b39d1eb:

  • Added a second Pod/checkpoint snapshot immediately before destruction.
  • Added per-(logicID,VDevID) first-observation tracking so newly created vNPUs require a fresh grace period and cannot inherit stale card confirmations.
  • Accepted valid empty ; post-allocation annotation placeholders without poisoning the node snapshot.
  • Added regression tests for the ownership race, fresh vNPU grace, and empty annotation placeholders.

Validation passed locally: go build ./cmd/... ./internal/... ./version/..., go vet ./internal/cleanup/... ./internal/server/... ./cmd/..., and TMPDIR=/tmp/t go test ./cmd/... ./internal/... ./version/....

@maverick-woo Follow-up for the two inline findings:

  • P1: ownership race: fixed in b39d1eb. Cleanup now rechecks Pod/checkpoint ownership immediately before destruction and tracks first observation per (logicID, VDevID), so newly created vNPUs require a fresh grace period.
  • P1: empty ; annotation placeholder: fixed in b39d1eb. Empty post-allocation segments are accepted; non-empty malformed segments still fail closed.

Added regression tests for both cases. Local build, vet, and full TMPDIR=/tmp/t go test ./cmd/... ./internal/... ./version/... pass.
