## Choose the request

- **Status or explanation:** read `<project>/research/STATE.md` and the
artifacts its recorded stage implies. Report the stage, gates passed,
attempts completed and remaining, and any expected artifact that is missing.
Then stop: do not create or repair STATE.md, advance a stage, run
experiments, or spend the attempt budget. Missing or corrupt state is a
finding to report, not permission to initialize a campaign.
- **Start, resume, or run a named stage:** follow Procedure below with the
user's existing choices and authorization. The stage gates still apply.
