Currently, the backUp() script is just that, a script, not a function. I'm sure I did this for some reason, but I don't recall what it was. Determine what the reason was, and decide if it should be converted to a function.

I vaguely recall that when I wrote the backUp script I had some reason why I wrote it as a script rather than a function, but I don't recall what it was. Figure this out and determine if it should be converted to a function.

Scope
This issue may involve code changes, however, an attempt should be made to not make code changes as a part of this issue. Rather, if it's determined that backUp should be converted to a function, then another issue should be written to complete said work.
If the result of this evaluation is that backUp should remain a script rather than a function, then the justification for this should be added to either backUp's README.md, the script document, or both, not really sure at time of writing.
Blockers
It's more important that unit tests exist and are run by a pipeline than that this feature is added, as a result, that issue #2 and #3 shale be worked first.
For the same reason, GitHub status badges shale be created first (issues #4 & #5).
Understanding the level of unit test coverage for each theoretically supported shell, and increasing that coverage is of grater importance than this issue, as a result, #7, and the issues produced by it, should be worked prior to this one.
