- Around line 409-420: Replace both direct provider-file writes with a shared
atomic replacement helper, adding a function such as write_provider_file near
ProvidersGuard that writes to a temporary file, renames it to the target, and
removes the temporary file on failure. Use this helper in ProvidersGuard cleanup
and the main write path around the existing std::fs::write error handling,
preserving the current error reporting and return behavior.
- Around line 257-275: Update ProvidersGuard::drop and the corresponding editor
coordination to perform cleanup only if providers.json is unchanged since the
initial read, using a write-if-unchanged mechanism or shared coordination
honored by the editor. Preserve the existing cleanup decisions and
manual-cleanup reporting, and do not rely on atomic replacement alone.
- Around line 376-408: Protect the complete provider installation
read/merge/write sequence around parse_existing and with_our_provider from
concurrent edits that do not hold the Wally run lock. Add coordination or
conflict detection that verifies providers.json has not changed since it was
read before committing the merged document, and preserve concurrent edits by
aborting or retrying rather than writing stale bytes; ensure cleanup does not
restore a snapshot over a detected conflict.

Limited review of current head 0c2999a, including the provider-config atomic-write fix and setup/cleanup failure-path tests. The fix addresses partial-write loss and preserves observed intervening edits. The final compare/rename race with an uncooperative external writer remains; users should avoid concurrent provider-configuration changes during a Wally session. This approval does not claim that race is eliminated or that a released runtime has been tested. At review time, six checks passed and macOS CI remained in progress. No local builds or model/runtime calls were performed for this review.

🔒 Security & Privacy | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Keep the target file's permissions and symlink when staging the replacement.
The rename puts a different file in place of providers.json. That has two effects that last after cleanup:
- Permissions get wider.
std::fs::write(&staged, …)creates the staged file with the default umask mode, usually0644. If the user'sproviders.jsonis0600, setup replaces it with a world-readable file. Cleanup restores the original bytes through another rename, so the file stays0644. Other providers in this file can contain literalapiKeyvalues, so local users can then read those secrets. The oldstd::fs::write(path, …)kept the existing mode. - Symlinks are lost. If
providers.jsonis a symlink, for example from a dotfile manager,std::fs::rename(staged, path)replaces the link with a regular file. Cleanup writes the original bytes into that regular file. The symlink is gone, and the real dotfile never gets the restore.
To fix this, resolve the symlink first. Then stage, compare, rename, and remove against the resolved target. Give the staged file the target's permissions before you write any content to it.

wally command-code -m <model>, which opens Command Code (npmcommand-code, https://commandcode.ai/docs) against a local or hosted RunAnywhere model.Command Code reads custom providers only from
~/.commandcode/providers.json. Nothing moves that file, and it reloads live. So a launch merges arunanywhere-wallyprovider into the person's file and takes it out when the tool exits. Adds
wally command-code -m <model>, which launches Command Code (npmcommand-code) against a local or hosted RunAnywhere model.Because Command Code reads custom providers only from
~/.commandcode/providers.json, the launch merges arunanywhere-wallyprovider into that file and takes it out when the tool exits. The file is written atomically (staged beside it and renamed into place) and only when its bytes are unchanged, so Command Code never reads a torn or overwritten merge; if the file changed in between, the merge is re-planned from what is there now. On exit, the original bytes go back if the file was untouched, or only our provider comes out if it was edited mid-session. A lock in~/.commandcode/keeps it to one run at a time, and the file references the key via$WALLY_COMMAND_CODE_API_KEYinstead of holding it.For people without a Command Code sign-in, a placeholder
COMMAND_CODE_API_KEYplusCMD_LOCAL_ONLY=1gets past the login screen without reaching Command Code's backend; local models always run local-only.--skip-onboarding --no-auto-updateare passed and-tis left to the person. Command Code's own subcommands (-- status,-- login) run untouched, while-- acpgets the wired provider.Notes
