Why

Player suggestion (Estienne, backed by miss nuance): bring back duels so people can spar OOC or IC without it costing health or hunger. Health regenerates slowly, and nonlethal PvP still uses up health and hunger. Last season's duel plugin isn't anywhere we can find, so this adds duels to RPCharacters, which already owns PvP, knockouts, graves and strikes.

What it does

  • /duel challenges the player you're looking at; /duel <player> works too. The target gets [Accept] / [Decline] buttons in chat. /duel cancel withdraws, /duel yield gives up. If you challenge someone who already challenged you, theirs is accepted.
  • After a 3-second countdown, only the two duellists can hurt each other.
  • A blow from the opponent that would kill ends the duel instead: no death, nonlethal knockout, grave, dropped items or strike.
  • When the duel ends, each duellist gets back the health the other took. Hunger, saturation, MMOCore mana/stamina, burning and potion effects go back to how they were at the start.
  • Nearby players (24 blocks) see who started a duel and who won. Names go through DisplayIdentityService, so masks hold, and tab completion never suggests player names.

Issues the suggestion didn't cover

  • No free heal. Only the opponent's damage is given back. It is added to current health, not reset to a snapshot, so fall damage, lava or anything else stays real. Burning counts as the opponent's only if they set you alight (fire aspect, a flame arrow). Poison and wither count only if they arrived on the same tick as the opponent's hit, tipped arrow or thrown potion. Any other ignition or effect takes that back, so lingering damage of unknown origin stays real and can kill.
  • No cleansing. Debuffs that came from the duel are removed. Ones the player already had come back with the time they had left.
  • No shield. A hit from a third player or a mob interrupts the duel at once. Interrupted duels only give back the duel's own damage: no hunger, mana or effects.
  • No free mana. A duellist hitting a mob also interrupts the duel, so spells cast at mobs mid-duel aren't refunded. Armour stands (often furniture) and dropped items don't count.
  • Bystanders are safe. Duellists can't hurt other players, e.g. with stray arrows or AoE skills.
  • Real fights win. /pvp start ends the duels of everyone in its radius before it begins. You can't duel while in a /pvp start fight, a started SimpleFactions battle, while knocked out, without an active character, or outside survival/adventure.
  • Clean endings (draws). Logging out (the quitter is mended before being saved), dying another way, leaving survival, a battle starting, moving more than 32 blocks apart, the 10-minute limit, or a server stop all end the duel as a draw and mend both players.
  • Spam. One open challenge per challenger, each lasting 30 seconds, and the target must be within 16 blocks.
  • Regions. Duels obey WorldGuard's pvp flag like any fight; they don't override it.

Known small trade-off: hunger used while duelling, for up to 10 minutes, is given back even if it was spent walking around.

Config

The new duel.yml (created on first start, so no manual config step) holds the ranges, timings and every message. It reloads with /rpcharacter reload.

Code

  • pvp/Duels holds the challenges and duels and the damage rules. pvp/Duel is the per-duel state and damage ledger. pvp/DuelSnapshot restores the start state. pvp/DuelCommand is the command plus listeners (HIGH screen, MONITOR ledger, quit, death). loaders/DuelLoader reads duel.yml.
  • PvpKnockoutManager.onLethalDamage calls Duels.settleLethalBlow before any knockout logic, so a duel's lethal blow never reaches knockouts or strikes.
  • PvpCommand ends duels for /pvp start targets. PvpSituations.involves is new.

Tests

Dev bot test (~/duel-test/test.js on the host, two seeded characters, attacker in nonlethal mode): 23/23 pass. It covers challenge and accept from chat, the lethal duel blow (no death, no knockout, no strike prompt), the opponent's damage given back while generic damage stays, a zombie hit interrupting, duel debuffs removed while an older slowness stays, /pvp start ending the duel, the opponent's tipped arrow of strong poison being given back in full while console-applied poison is not, logging out mid-duel, and no RPCharacters exceptions. That run found the "Unknown left" naming bug, now fixed: names are kept from the start of the duel.

DuelsTest (12 tests) covers challenge flow, countdown, the lethal blow through the real PvpKnockoutManager, the damage ledger, interruptions, bystanders, projectiles/damage sources, restore rules, every draw reason, quitting, death, /pvp start and command routing. Locally mvn verify passes all 1726 other tests, with 100% line coverage on the new code. The usual Windows-only POSIX-permission tests were excluded locally; CI runs them.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Players challenge whoever they look at (or name) with /duel; the target
accepts or declines from chat. After a countdown only the two duellists can
hurt each other. A blow from the opponent that would kill ends the duel
instead, so there is no death, knockout, grave, item drop or strike.

When it ends, each duellist gets back the health the other took, plus
hunger, saturation, mana, stamina, burning and potion effects as they were
at the start. Debuffs they already had stay, so a duel never heals or
cleanses more than it cost.

Anything outside the duel stays real: a third player or a mob hitting a
duellist, or a duellist fighting a mob, interrupts it and only the duel's
own damage comes back, so it can't be used as a shield, free heal or free
mana. Duellists can't hurt bystanders. /pvp start, a SimpleFactions battle,
logging out, dying, leaving survival, moving apart or the time limit end it
as a draw. Settings and messages live in the new duel.yml.

This adds friendly duels with restoration and interruption rules. Nothing in the supplied review evidence points to a concrete merge-blocking problem. Checking event timing on a live server would still be sensible.

Burning, poison and wither with no attacker now count as duel damage only
within 30 seconds of the opponent's last hit, and burning stops counting
once the duellist steps in fire or lava, so lava can still kill.

Ending messages use the names from the start of the duel: a player who
logs out has no character left to name ("Unknown left" on Dev).

@coderabbitai review

Addressed: lingering damage (fire tick, poison, wither) is now attributed — it counts only within 30 s of the opponent's last hit, and fire tick stops counting after the duellist touches fire/lava themselves (tests in lingeringDamageCountsOnlyWhenTheOpponentCanAccountForIt). Also fixed duellist names on logout found in the Dev bot test.

Instead of a time window, the duel now records the origin of lingering
damage. Burning counts as the opponent's only when they set the duellist
alight (EntityCombustByEntityEvent with the opponent or their projectile
as combuster); any other ignition takes it back. Poison and wither count
only when the effect is applied on the same tick as the opponent's hit
or a splash/lingering potion they threw; any other application or removal
takes it back. Lingering damage of unknown origin stays on the normal
damage path and can kill.

Poison and wither now count as the opponent's only when the effect's cause
matches the opponent's action on the same tick: ARROW needs their
projectile hit, ATTACK or PLUGIN (skills) needs their hit, POTION_SPLASH
or AREA_EFFECT_CLOUD needs a potion they threw. Commands, food, drinks and
all other causes never count, so console poison on the same tick as an
ordinary hit stays real.
