Merge Risk: Moderate · up to e2061

The Clack 1.x upgrade requires Node 20.12 or newer, but the CLI still advertises Node 20 or newer. Users on Node 20.0 through 20.11 could hit install warnings or runtime failures. Raise the engines.node range to >=20.12.0 before merging, or accept the narrower support.

Explanation

The title "chore: upgrade clack to 1.x" matches the main change. The changeset and package.json update the @clack/prompts dependency in @tanstack/cli from ^0.10.0 to ^1.8.1, and the PR objectives state the goal is the Clack 1.x upgrade. The title is concise and specific. It uses the Conventional Commits "chore:" prefix and the short name "clack" for @clack/prompts, which is clear enough for a teammate scanning history.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

No eligible functions found in the changed files. Skipping docstring coverage check. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 0 functions across 0 files. Major · Stability & Availability · Quick win

Align the CLI engine range with @clack/prompts@1.8.1.

packages/cli/package.json declares Node >=20, while the resolved @clack/prompts@1.8.1 metadata declares Node >=20.12.0. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Node 20.0 through 20.11 is therefore advertised as supported by the CLI but is outside the dependency's supported range. Raise engines.node to >=20.12.0, or retain a Clack version compatible with Node 20.0.

#535 will solve this. it is already our effective minimum too since validate-npm-package-name requires it

@43081j Understood. The effective minimum already comes from validate-npm-package-name. I’ll defer the engine-range correction to #535; no duplicate change is needed here.

There’s a supported-runtime regression here that we should keep covered before landing this.

AI review notes:
In an isolated pipe test on Node 20.17, the actual @clack/prompts 1.8.1 intro/outro functions emit ANSI escapes with default output and with NO_COLOR=1. The released 0.10.1 dependency stays plain in both cases. The same cases pass on Node 22.9 and 24.22.
All six installed dependencies were pinned and their lockfile integrity values matched the inspected artifacts. Execution was offline with no provider calls. This tests the dependency calls, not the full CLI or interactive prompt rendering.
The CLI's existing dependency combination includes Node 20.17, so moving the runtime floor would be a separate compatibility decision. A compatible Clack fix is preferable. The current-base candidate also retains unrelated lock entries that the original lock refresh pruned.

this is the same FORCE_COLOR node bug coderabbit and your agent picked up in the other PR, right?

its not being worked around in clack since its a Node bug rather than a clack bug, so i suppose we're stuck until we bump the minimum Node here to the one without the bug.

this is why i wouldn't have worked around it. following this logic, every dependency that uses styleText now has to fix Node's own bug, rather than us just relying on Node itself shipping a fix.

The failing cases here also include a plain pipe with FORCE_COLOR unset and a pipe with NO_COLOR set on Node 20.17.0. FORCE_COLOR=0 was already colored with the old dependency, so I am not counting that case as a new regression.

AI review notes: The same 18-case probe compared the old installed Clack with 1.8.1 under Node 20.17.0, 22.9.0 and 24.22.0. The old version was plain in those two Node 20.17 pipe cases and 1.8.1 emitted ANSI. The newer runtimes matched. That is consistent with the older Node styleText behavior, but upgrading Clack still changes the CLI output on a runtime the repo currently supports. I am keeping this PR open rather than adding a dependency patch or changing the supported Node floor as part of it.

im pretty sure your agent is hung up on the same point as before. some bug exists in Node and it wants me to work around it in userland code.

so we're stuck. either we need to accept that Node's bugs are its own to fix, or we wait until we can bump the minimum node version to one which doesn't have whatever bug it is.
