fix(virtual-core): preserve reading position on paddingStart/scrollMargin change with anchorTo: 'end' - #1370
When anchorTo: 'end' is active and paddingStart or scrollMargin changes via setOptions (for example, showing or hiding a collapsible Load older messages banner above a reverse-scroll chat timeline), every item shifts in scroll coordinates by nextLeadOffset - prevLeadOffset, while getTotalSize() changes by nextPaddingStart - prevPaddingStart (and by 0 when scrollMargin changes).
Previously, Virtualizer did not track lead-offset changes across setOptions() calls, leaving scrollOffset unadjusted so the viewport jumped relative to the items the user was reading.
This PR:
Tracks the effective lead offset (paddingStart + scrollMargin) across option updates when anchorTo === 'end'.
Preserves bottom-edge pinning (currentOffset >= maxScrollOffset when maxScrollOffset > 0) by shifting by nextPaddingStart - prevPaddingStart, and otherwise shifts scrollOffset by nextLeadOffset - prevLeadOffset so visible items remain stationary.
Accumulates consecutive lead-offset deltas if multiple setOptions() updates happen before the scroll event lands, and clamps deferred pendingScrollAnchor targets against [0, maxOffset] inside _willUpdate() via bounded _clampedBy retry so shrinking lead offsets never strand stale unclamped offsets.
Adds unit tests in packages/virtual-core/tests/anchor-end.test.ts covering paddingStart increase/decrease, scrollMargin changes, and bottom-pinned timelines.
I have tested this code locally with pnpm run test:pr.
🚀 Release Impact
This change affects published code, and I have generated a changeset.
This change is docs/CI/dev-only (no release).
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Improved reading-position stability when content is anchored to the end and start padding or scroll margin changes. The visible item is better preserved during these layout updates, including after new items are prepended. Scrolling also handles cases where the adjusted position reaches the start of the content, and can retry the adjustment when the content grows.
…th anchorTo: 'end'
Track lead offset (paddingStart + scrollMargin) across option updates and adjust scrollOffset under anchorTo: 'end' when lead offset changes while preserving bottom-edge pinning and clamping deferred anchors inside the layout pass.
ClosesTanStack#1366
For end-anchored virtualizers, changes to paddingStart or scrollMargin now capture and preserve the reading anchor without triggering edge-key measurement invalidation. Anchor deltas accumulate across updates, and clamped writes are tracked for retry. Tests cover offset preservation, prepends, clamping, and sizer growth.
setOptions detects paddingStart and scrollMargin changes separately from edge-key changes. Tests cover basic offset adjustments, and the changeset declares a patch release.
Accumulate and synchronize anchor adjustments packages/virtual-core/src/index.ts, packages/virtual-core/tests/anchor-end.test.ts
Anchor deltas combine with pending adjustments. Synchronization records clamped adjustments before writing the target. Tests cover prepends, clamping, and retry after the sizer grows.
TanStack/virtual#1340: Corrects end-distance calculation for nonzero scrollMargin, which is also involved in this change.
TanStack/virtual#1359: Changes anchor synchronization to track and retry a scroll write clamped before the sizer grows.

Clamped anchors lose the reading position when two lead-offset changes are batched.
When paddingStart changes from 40 to 0 and back to 40 before _willUpdate runs, and the reader is at scrollOffset 33, the first item ends at viewport y=0 instead of y=7. The first call clamps scrollOffset to 0, so the second call anchors at offset 0 instead of the original offset of 33. The summed delta cannot restore the value that the clamp discarded. This path is newly reachable because lead-offset changes now run the anchor branch. The clamp itself predates this PR.
A fix must keep the unclamped anchor offset for the next lead-offset change. The public scrollOffset must remain non-negative, because the clamp prevents negative tracked offsets (#1229).

Start the paddingStart and scrollMargin tests from a reachable offset.
Both tests start at offset: 100. The fixture has five 50px items in a 200px viewport, so the largest reachable offset is 50. The expected requests (150 and 140) also exceed the new maxima (100 and 90). The mocked scrollToFn does not update scrollTop, so these tests check only the requested value. Their names say "keeps visible content stable," but the assertions do not check the visible position.
The reader-inside-padding test and the clamped-write retry test already cover reachable starts. Consider starting these two tests from a reachable offset and renaming them to describe the requested change. Alternatively, assert the visible position after a scroll event with emitScroll.

Add a test that accumulates two lead-offset deltas before one commit.
The new #1366 tests commit after every update, because each helper calls _willUpdate(). The pending anchor is cleared before the next setOptions(), so prevDelta is always 0 in this file. Removing the prevDelta read would leave every assertion in this file passing.
Add a case that calls virtualizer.setOptions() twice with different lead offsets and no _willUpdate() between them. Fire the scroll observer before _willUpdate(), then assert the resulting virtualizer.scrollOffset includes both deltas. The scroll event must come before the commit. _willUpdate() clears the pending delta, so a scroll event after the commit does not test the pending translation.

Add a no-event case for the clamped paddingStart retry.
The existing retry test emits scroll(90) before the sizer grows. A retry that waits for that read-back would still pass. The setOptions anchor branch sets the clamp record, and the retry in _willUpdate does not read scroll position. The no-event path is therefore the same as the tested path. The suite does not check that path for this producer.
The suggested test has the same setup and first-write assertions as the existing one. It removes the read-back and checks the retry on the second _willUpdate.

Compare the follow check against the same offset space that scrollToEnd uses.
After a paddingStart or scrollMargin change, setOptions moves scrollOffset before the DOM sizer commits. If a second setOptions appends an item before that commit, isAtEnd() compares the moved offset with the stale element maximum. A reader 20px above the bottom can then be treated as end-pinned and scrolled to the bottom. The follow check should use the lead-adjusted maximum, or exclude the pending lead delta.

Keep a pending follow anchor when the lead offset changes.
A paddingStart or scrollMargin change after an append, before _willUpdate, replaces the pending follow with an anchor delta. _willUpdate then restores the reader's row instead of calling scrollToEnd(), so the appended item can stay below the viewport.

Scroll reports before commit count the pending anchor delta twice.
When resizeItem corrects the offset while pendingScrollAnchor holds an anchor delta, the write already includes that delta. A scroll report that arrives before _willUpdate runs is still translated by _toLayoutOffset, which adds the same delta again. The doubled offset can then become scrollOffset, and _willUpdate writes it. The reader can end up delta pixels from the intended position.
A correction must keep the _willUpdate handling for an unwritable element, a smooth scroll in progress, and a clamped target. Clearing the anchor in the resize write path would skip that handling.

Record the newest anchor target when it exceeds layoutMax.
When the new anchor target is above layoutMax, the anchor branch keeps the older _clampedAdjustment. After the sizer grows, _retryClampedAdjustment() writes that older target, not the newest one. For example, a stored target of 400 remains after a newer target of 500 with layoutMax of 450. When the sizer grows to 450, the retry writes 400 instead of the newest target clamped once to 450.
Clearing the record does not fix this. The newest target would never be retried, and the viewport would stay short of its landing. Record the newest anchor target in _clampedAdjustment in place of the older record. Keep the immediate _scrollToOffset(target) write unchanged.

Keep scrollOffset within the reachable range when paddingStart grows on an unscrollable list.
When paddingStart grows and the content fits the viewport, the anchor sync stores the new target in scrollOffset. The element clamps the write to 0 and fires no scroll event. scrollOffset therefore stays at the unreachable target until the user scrolls, and getScrollOffset() returns that value in the meantime.
An upper-bound clamp to layoutMax needs care. _clampedBy measures the write-time limit as the element maximum plus _holdOffset, so layoutMax can differ from the reachable range while a hold is active. A correction must also keep the deferred retry path valid for targets that become reachable later.
