feat(web): collapse linguist-generated files in the pull request Code tab - #219
Files that .gitattributes marks linguist-generated stayed expanded in the Code tab, so generated output crowded out the real changes.
The server now reads .gitattributes (root plus each ancestor directory of the changed files) at the diff revision through the provider's existing file-contents read, and returns the flagged paths as generatedPaths on the diff result. The Code tab collapses those files by default behind a new "Collapse generated files" switch under Diffs & pull requests (on by default). A reader's manual expand still wins, and nothing is written to the provider's Viewed state.
Limits: up to 24 .gitattributes reads per uncached diff slice; a provider without file-contents reads, or a failed read, collapses nothing. Mobile and the local DiffPanel are not covered.
Note
Medium Risk
Adds extra file-content reads on every uncached diff and new parsing of .gitattributes rules; mistakes could mis-label or over-collapse files, but failures fail open (no generated marking).
Overview
Pull request diffs can now identify linguist-generated paths and collapse them by default in the Code tab, so generated output does not crowd out hand-written changes.
On each diff slice, the server loads .gitattributes at the revision (root plus ancestor directories of changed files, capped at 24 reads), parses linguist-generated rules in new pullRequestGeneratedFiles.ts, and attaches matching paths as optional generatedPaths on PullRequestDiffResult. Failed or missing reads leave nothing marked generated.
The web client reads generatedPaths and applies a new diffGeneratedFilesCollapsed setting (default on, exposed under Diffs & pull requests as “Collapse generated files”). isFileCollapsedByDefault folds generated files when that switch is on, independent of the general “default diff file state”; manual expand/collapse choices still win.
Reviewed by Cursor Bugbot for commit b31b07e. Bugbot is set up for automated code reviews on this repo. Configure here.
The server identifies generated paths in pull request diffs by reading applicable .gitattributes files. The client uses those paths and a new setting to determine whether generated files are collapsed by default.

Summary
Diff and settings contracts packages/contracts/src/pullRequest.ts, packages/contracts/src/settings.ts, apps/desktop/src/settings/DesktopClientSettings.test.ts
The diff result contract adds optional generatedPaths. Client settings add diffGeneratedFilesCollapsed, which defaults to true; the desktop settings fixture includes the setting.
The server parses supported linguist-generated rules, reads applicable .gitattributes files for changed paths, and adds matching paths to diff results. Tests cover rule precedence, directory selection, and service integration.
Client collapse behavior and setting apps/web/src/components/pullRequest/pullRequestDiff.logic.ts, apps/web/src/components/pullRequest/pullRequestDiff.logic.test.ts, apps/web/src/components/pullRequest/PullRequestCodeTab.tsx, apps/web/src/components/settings/SettingsPanels.tsx, apps/web/src/components/settings/settingsSearch.ts
The client uses generated-path membership and the collapse setting to determine file defaults, including when marking files viewed. The diff settings panel and settings search include the new setting.
Generated-file collapsing has several edge-case inaccuracies, and slow attribute reads can delay opening diffs. The change is mergeable with owner awareness and focused follow-up on these limitations and fallback coverage.

Explanation
The description covers the problem, the change, and verification limits. It does not follow the template in several places. The Problem section has no explicit expected-behavior or reproduction detail. The Scope and approval section is missing: it gives no linked issue, no maintainer approval, and no explanation of why the change qualifies as focused configuration of an established capability. The Verification section lists no tests or manual checks and no observed results. The description also has no before/after screenshots for this UI change, and it does not name the model and harness used.
Resolution
Scope and approval: link the triaged issue or the discussion with explicit maintainer approval, including the approval comment. If no such issue exists, explain why the change qualifies as focused configuration of an established capability. Explain what already exists, what the new switch controls, and why its effects stay within that capability.
Verification: list the focused tests or manual checks run for the changed behavior and their observed results. State what was not checked.
UI evidence: add before/after screenshots of the Code tab with and without the collapse, and of the new switch under Diffs & pull requests. Upload them to GitHub and embed or link them.
Problem: add expected behavior and reproduction steps or environment, for example a repository with a linguist-generated file in a diff.

If a .gitattributes read fails, the diff must still succeed. Add a service test that returns a typed read error and asserts that the patch is returned without generated paths. The current test uses successful reads only.
As per coding guidelines, “Backend behavior changes ship with focused tests for that behavior.”

A rule such as [[:digit:]]*.gen.ts linguist-generated marks 1file.gen.ts as generated in Git, but this matcher misses it. When general file collapsing is off, the Code tab leaves that file expanded. Translate Git bracket expressions correctly before constructing the regular expression.

Parse quoted .gitattributes patterns.
When the general diff default is expanded, a rule such as "generated file.js" linguist-generated does not collapse that file. The parser splits the quoted pattern at the space and rejects it. Parse Git’s C-style quoted patterns before matching them.

Resolve nested overrides beyond the directory limit.
When a diff slice spans more than 24 attribute directories, the limit can skip a nested override. A root rule can then collapse a file that the nested rule marks as not generated. Resolve the applicable overrides before assigning generated status.
