Loop, pcurl and Workflows changes made while building the stargazer sketch, outside framework work and without sign-off. until() and run() now resume a fiber the final flush makes ready instead of cancelling it, pcurl's released php://fd streams are closed only after the waiter detaches them (fixes EEXIST on pooled connections under epoll), and cancelled Workflows nodes are no longer retried. The loop changes alter how parked fibers are treated; whether they fit the loop's design, or whether the trigger (Http fakes settling promises with no I/O) belongs on the fake side instead, is the main thing to judge.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Async tasks created during the event loop’s final promise flush now get a chance to run.
    • Removed HTTP sockets are closed only after they are no longer being awaited, helping keep sequential requests on persistent connections reliable.
    • Workflow cancellation now propagates immediately instead of triggering retries or fallback behavior.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified async socket lifecycle, event-loop behavior, and workflow retry and cancellation rules.

Fix `until()` and `run()` so a fiber whose promise the final flush settles is resumed instead of cancelled; `run()` now flushes before stopping, and `until()` only turns again when the scheduler is not mid-resume (new `FiberScheduler::resuming()`). Retire `LoopPcurlHandler`'s `php://fd` duplicates on `CURL_POLL_REMOVE` and close them through a deferral once the waiter has detached them, which removes the stale epoll entry that made pooled connections fail `EPOLL_CTL_ADD` with `EEXIST` on Linux. Stop `AsyncWorkflowLogic` from retrying a node whose task was cancelled. Add `EventLoopTest`, `AsyncHttpTest` (with `/keep/` server routes) and `AsyncWorkflowsTest` coverage, raise the `AsyncDatabaseTest` parallel-read bound from 1.5 s to 1.8 s (measured 1.52-1.65 s; serial reads take at least 2 s), and update the `.okf` event-loop, async-drivers, workflow graph and log notes. These changes were made while building the stargazer sketch, outside framework work.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The changes update event-loop handling of promises, defer closure of pcurl socket streams, and prevent async workflow retries after cancellation. They also add tests for these behaviors, support keep-alive requests in the HTTP fixture, and adjust a database timing threshold.

Changes

Event-loop promise flushing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Flush promises and schedule ready work
src/Voyager/IOPools/Deferrals/FiberScheduler.php, src/Voyager/IOPools/EventLoop.php, tests/IOPools/EventLoopTest.php, .okf/io-pools/event-loop.md, .okf/log.md
run() and until() recheck for work after flushing promises. until() takes another turn when the flush creates work and the scheduler is not resuming. Tests cover chained promises that settle during the final flush.

pcurl socket stream cleanup

Layer / File(s) Summary
Retire and close detached streams
src/Voyager/Http/Async/Concerns/TracksInFlight.php, src/Voyager/Http/Async/LoopPcurlHandler.php, .okf/http/async-drivers.md, .okf/log.md
The handler queues removed socket streams and closes streams queued on an earlier wakes() call. When the handler is forgotten, it defers closing streams still in its queues.
Exercise keep-alive requests and cleanup
tests/Http/Fixtures/server.php, tests/Http/AsyncHttpTest.php
The fixture handles multiple requests on /keep/ routes. Tests check sequential async responses and verify that pcurl’s retired and closing lists are empty after the loop runs.

Async workflow cancellation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Propagate cancellation without retry
src/Voyager/Workflows/AsyncWorkflowLogic.php, tests/Workflows/AsyncWorkflowsTest.php, .okf/workflows/graph.md, .okf/log.md
_execAsync rethrows CancelledException before the general retry handler. The test checks that the task is attempted once, and the documentation describes cancellation propagation.

Database timing test threshold

Layer / File(s) Summary
Adjust the read timing assertion
tests/Database/AsyncDatabaseTest.php
The timing comment accounts for worker connection setup, and the maximum elapsed time assertion changes from 1.5 to 1.8 seconds.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 4137e

Ready async work can be cancelled, and pcurl streams can remain open after the loop stops. Fix these lifecycle paths and make the cleanup test check closure before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 4137e

The changes improve normal completion and socket-detachment ordering, but final HTTP cleanup depends on another loop turn that a completed blocking wait does not guarantee. This leaves a resource-lifetime gap, especially when execution stops or the loop remains idle. No privilege escalation or data-isolation failure was demonstrated.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: Terminal pcurl cleanup acquires a new dependency on future loop progress. When final transfer harvesting forgets the handler, its retired streams move into a deferred closure after the current turn has released its deferral batch. A blocking until() can then return with those duplicates still open, while stop or failure also does not guarantee another cleanup turn. If the loop remains retained but undriven, these descriptors remain outside active-transfer ownership, weakening resource-release and process-level failure containment. Continued loop execution closes them correctly; indefinite accumulation and remote exploitability are not established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated ownership risk concerns duplicated HTTP socket streams and their waiter registrations in an affected PHP process. Prolonged descriptor retention can affect other work sharing that process's resource budget. The evidence does not establish tenant counts, cross-service propagation, or additional privileges.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A terminal transfer can cause socket retirement, idle-handler removal, and deferred cleanup, after which a blocking wait can return before cleanup runs. This supports a resource-lifetime concern, not a verified attacker-driven exhaustion path: production caller guarantees, retention duration, and repeatable accumulation remain unresolved.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Socket identity remains under curl and handler control. Removal deletes the old stream-to-fd mapping before retirement; stale fired wakes without a mapping are ignored, and dispatch checks the current socket entry. Repeated removal does not enqueue an already-removed socket again. These controls counter the proposed wrong-descriptor or request-isolation failure.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The scheduler prevents recursive resume and resets its resuming flag in finally. Borrowed until() can still cancel parked siblings in its exhaustion fallback, but that fallback predates this PR. It is not assessed as an introduced or worsened security concern.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define an explicit terminal cleanup owner that guarantees waiter detachment and descriptor release without requiring unrelated future work. Validate that guarantee by retaining stream references and checking actual closure after final completion and interruption, rather than only checking emptied bookkeeping queues.

Assert closure of a retained stream after deferred cleanup.

LoopPcurlHandler::forgotten() clears retired and closing before its deferred fclose() runs. The empty-queue assertion can therefore pass without proving that the stream closed.

Retain a live stream before cleanup, drive an explicit synchronization and deferral turn, and then assert that is_resource($stream) is false. Use deterministic coordination or an appropriate test seam to guarantee that the stream is live. Do not rely on a fixed 100 ms request delay.

Update the cleanup assertion in the test using the `retired` and `closing`
queues so it proves the retained stream is actually closed after deferred
cleanup. Coordinate deterministically to capture a live stream before cleanup,
run the required synchronization and deferral turn, then assert
`is_resource($stream)` is false; do not rely on a fixed request delay.

Count queued deferrals as loop work.

If forgotten() queues cleanup for the final transfer, EventLoop::run() can exit when ResourceRegistry::hasWork() returns false, before another turn releases the callback. The cleanup may not run, leaving the streams open. Include pending deferrals in the loop’s work check.

Defer ready-fiber handling instead of removing the guard.

The current fallback can cancel a fiber that became ready during the outer FiberScheduler::resume(). However, removing ! $this->fibers->resuming() is not safe. LoopWaiter::timeout() returns 0 while the ready fiber is pending, so each nested turn immediately reaches FiberScheduler::resume(), which returns false until the outer resume exits. The nested until() can therefore loop without progress.

Rework the borrowed-wait handoff so it preserves the no-recursive-resume constraint, defers ready fibers while a resume is active, and processes them after the owning resume releases resuming. Do not replace the guard with an unconditional continue, and do not call cancelAll() on the ready fiber.
