- The Hurd kernel was the GNU Project’s original kernel, meant to create a fully free Unix-like OS (GNU OS), but due to slow progress Linux became the official GNU kernel creating GNU/Linux.
- In 2005, the Linux kernel was using a proprietary distributed version control system called BitKeeper. After a dispute over BitKeeper's licensing, the Linux kernel project needed a replacement. So Linus Torvalds decided to build one and git was born.
- Docker began as technology inside a company called dotCloud, which was their PaaS product. Eventually Docker became the name of both the technology and the company which became vastly more famous than dotCloud itself.
- Kubernetes was originally an internal Google project called Project Seven, named after a character from Star Trek Voyager. The name Kubernetes comes from Greek term that means helmsman or pilot, which is someone who steers a ship. That's also why the logo looks like a ship's wheel.
