RemoteTech Overhaul

RemoteTech Overhaul is a standalone compatibility plugin for Kerbal Space Program 1.12.5 and RemoteTech 1.9.12. It applies focused compatibility fixes without replacing or redistributing RemoteTech.

Version 0.4.0 expands the Target Selector Overhaul and adds optional compatibility patches:

  • The modern selector is also available from Antenna Configuration in the VAB/SPH, with body, ground-station, and Favorites targeting.
  • Multi-star systems support explicit barycenter roots, deterministic system ordering, deeper hierarchy indentation, a one-click Collapse All action, and no expand button on empty branches. The stock Sun is labelled Kerbol in this UI.
  • Body rows prefer the scaled Kopernicus map icon supplied by a planet pack. When no icon is available, font-safe symbols distinguish stars, barycenters, solid planets, small solid bodies, gas giants, wormholes, and black holes. KEX-Wormholes and Singularity integration is optional and reflection-based.
  • Kerbin is added once as the initial body favorite. Removing it remains a persistent player choice.
  • Optional patches correct JX2 Antenna data rates under Kerbalism, move JX2 dishes to suitable Community Tech Tree nodes, and remove NFEx communication parts when the full RemoteTech + NFEx + JX2 combination is installed.

Adaptive Probe Autonomy from version 0.3.0 also remains available and is enabled by default in KSP's difficulty settings:

  • Operational probe SAS hardware provides an autonomous control window of 25, 75, 150, or 300 seconds according to its runtime SAS level.
  • Commands within that window are immediate. Once physical signal delay exceeds the window, RemoteTech's full delay applies without subtraction.
  • A valid connection is always required, local control is unchanged, and intentional Flight Computer ExtraDelay remains intact.
  • The Flight Computer queue displays physical signal delay, autonomy window, and effective control delay. Its compact status reads Probe Autonomy while the entire physical delay is covered.
  • The feature has no MechJeb dependency.

The Target Selector Overhaul from version 0.2.0 also remains available for directional antennas:

  • Recent keeps the last 10 piloted RemoteTech vessels, regardless of their antenna equipment, and groups them by their current celestial body. Both the vessel and its body can be selected as the dish target.
  • Planets provides a collapsed, unlimited-depth body hierarchy. Stars are independent roots, with the home star first. Body buttons retain RemoteTech's orbit colors, including its yellow fallback for root stars; a solid color strip keeps low-contrast tints visible on KSP's gray skin.
  • Vessels provides a global newest-to-oldest vessel list and an immediate, case-insensitive name search. Vessel rows show KSP's stock VesselType sprite at 24 pixels, vertically centered beside the button.
  • Favorites collects marked bodies and vessels. Each eligible row has an empty/filled star toggle, and favorite GUIDs persist between sessions.
  • The stock KSP gear opens a dedicated filter view. It can hide all vessels, filter by VesselType, and include or exclude vessels without a targetable antenna. Vessel-type controls reuse their stock enabled/disabled sprites. Vessels with a dish remain visible unless all vessels are hidden.
  • The lower-right square resizes the selector and remembers its dimensions.
  • RemoteTech's target-information popup remains attached to the selector's current left or right edge after moving or resizing the window.
  • Mouse-wheel input over the selector is captured so Tracking Station and Map View do not zoom while a selector list is being scrolled.
  • Target changes are simulated against RemoteTech's current graph. A centered confirmation dialog intercepts changes predicted to remove the source vessel's last route to a ground station or crewed command station.
  • No Target, Active Vessel, and the current target remain visible regardless of filters or the active section.

Kopernicus is optional. Runtime reflection detects its star component when available; the feature is designed to support multi-star hierarchies without a required Kopernicus reference. No particular planet pack is claimed compatible until tested in-game.

The original 0.1.0 feature also remains: RemoteTech vessel positions preserve double precision instead of passing through the single-precision Vector3 type.

An optional ModuleManager compatibility patch is included for installations that use JX2 Antenna, RemoteTech, and Kerbalism's science feature together. It corrects Kerbalism's generic third-party fallback for the three JX2 dishes, giving them maximum data rates of 1024, 1536, and 2048 kB/s while preserving their original RemoteTech ranges, dish angles, and energy cost per unit of data. The patch does nothing unless all required mods and the Kerbalism science feature are present.

When Community Tech Tree is also installed, the JX2 career progression is moved out of Large Probes: jw1MDA unlocks in Experimental Electrical Systems alongside the 400 Gm Reflectron GX-128, while ju1MDA and jx2LDA unlock in Exotic Electrical Systems. This placement patch does not require Kerbalism and is inactive without Community Tech Tree.

When RemoteTech, Near Future Exploration, and JX2 Antenna are installed together, another optional patch removes all Near Future Exploration communications parts (nfex-antenna-*) so they cannot bypass the JX2 progression. This deliberately deletes their PART definitions: existing vessels and craft files that use those antennas may lose parts or fail to load. Near Future Exploration remains unchanged when JX2 Antenna or RemoteTech is absent, and its non-communications parts are never targeted.

Requirements

  • Kerbal Space Program 1.12.5
  • RemoteTech 1.9.12
  • HarmonyKSP

Installation

  1. Install RemoteTech and HarmonyKSP.
  2. Download the release ZIP and extract it into the Kerbal Space Program folder.
  3. Verify that the plugin is at GameData/RemoteTechOverhaul/Plugins/RemoteTechOverhaul.dll.

The plugin applies the fix automatically at startup. On success, KSP.log contains:

[RemoteTechOverhaul] VesselSatellite.Position patched for double precision.
[RemoteTechOverhaul] Target Selector patch applied.
[RemoteTechOverhaul] Adaptive probe autonomy enabled.

If the expected RemoteTech API is missing or incompatible, the patch fails open and RemoteTech retains its original behavior. Set TargetSelectorEnabled = false in GameData/RemoteTechOverhaul/RemoteTechOverhaul.cfg to use RemoteTech's original target selector while keeping the position-precision fix. To disable all features, remove GameData/RemoteTechOverhaul and restart KSP.

Compatibility and scope

RemoteTech Overhaul is built against KSP 1.12.5 and RemoteTech 1.9.12. It does not modify or bundle RemoteTech.dll, Harmony, KSP, or Unity assemblies, and it uses its own Harmony patch identifier. Other KSP and RemoteTech versions have not been validated.

Building

Set KSP_ROOT to a KSP 1.12.5 installation containing RemoteTech 1.9.12 and HarmonyKSP, then run:

msbuild RemoteTechOverhaul.sln /p:Configuration=Release

The package tree is generated under build/GameData/RemoteTechOverhaul.
