Summary

Components that mount together each ask for their own access token. When those tokens have expired, several refreshes try to use the same refresh token at the same moment. With refresh token rotation on, the later ones can be rejected, so one component loads while another shows an error.

This makes token requests take turns, in the shared fetcher that every component already goes through. No component, prop or hook changes.

Why

  • Any page with two components that use different APIs is exposed (for example the Organization Switcher in a nav bar next to a My Organization component), and the exposure grows with every component the library adds.
  • Single-page apps: the SDK orders token requests for the same API but refreshes different APIs in parallel, so they spend the same refresh token at once. This is the problem described in auth0/auth0-spa-js#1684. Per the maintainers there, upgrading @auth0/auth0-spa-js to 2.24.1 or later and keeping a non-zero rotation overlap on the application mitigates it. This change does not depend on either: it removes the burst itself.
  • Server-side proxies (for example Next.js): the session is one cookie. Each proxied request refreshes on its own, and each response rewrites the cookie from the state it started with, so the last response wins. The SDK fix above does not apply there.

What

  • Shared queue (token-queue.ts): runs one task at a time, in order. A failing task does not block the next one, and a task that never settles releases the queue after 10 seconds, so a step-up prompt cannot block the page.
  • Single-page apps: the fetcher gives the SDK a token function that returns a cached token straight away and only queues a request that needs a refresh. Refreshes for different APIs run one after the other, and cached tokens never wait. It is used when the auth context exposes getAccessTokenSilently (the Auth0 React context does); otherwise the SDK default is used.
  • Server-side proxies: requests that arrive in the same tick are grouped by API. The first request of each group goes out first, with the scopes of the whole group, in its turn in the queue. The others wait for its response, which carries the updated session, and then go out with their own scope. A request without an audience or scope is sent as before. Like fetch, a request rejects as soon as its caller aborts it, even while it is still waiting.
  • Types: an optional getAccessTokenSilently on the context type and an optional getAccessToken on the fetcher options. Both are internal.
  • No new props, hooks or dependencies.

Not covered

  • Token calls made by the host app itself.
  • Other browser tabs (the queue is per page) and other server instances.
  • A first request that fails before it updates the session: the requests waiting behind it then go out together and can race as before.
  • The queue holds for at most 10 seconds. If a step-up prompt takes longer, the next refresh goes out.
  • The supported Next.js proxy ignores the per-request scope header and requests its configured scopes, so the group scope is not used there. The server's scope configuration must list every scope used by the mounted components.
  • A coordinated request waits one timer tick before it is sent, and browsers throttle timers in hidden tabs.

Testing

  • Unit tests: the queue (order, failure, hold limit, the limit counting from when a task starts), the single-page token function (cache hit, miss, one refresh at a time, failure), the proxy coordination (grouping, scopes, order, a first request that fails, is aborted, throws or never answers, and a waiting request that is aborted), and the wiring in both fetchers. Core 1312 tests and react 2209 tests pass. type-check, eslint and prettier are clean.

  • Reproduction against the real SDK (run locally, not committed because it needs @auth0/auth0-spa-js as a test dependency): the real fetcher with the real auth0-spa-js 2.17.1 client and a fake token endpoint that rotates refresh tokens and revokes the family on reuse, 25 cold bursts of four requests across two APIs. Without this change 23 of 25 bursts failed, and with it 0 of 25. The same burst against a model of a cookie session where the last response wins failed 25 of 25 without the change and 0 of 25 with it; that model is mine and is not the Next.js SDK. I have not re-run these against auth0-spa-js 2.24.1 or later.

  • Manual: the React SPA and Next.js examples against a development tenant. Signing in and reloading with expired tokens loaded every time, with no reuse-detected events since the change. That is a small sample, and the Next.js example had no failing baseline to compare with.

  • This change adds unit test coverage

  • Tested for both SPA and RWA flows, all example apps working

  • All existing and new tests complete without errors

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • Improved access-token handling for concurrent API requests, including coordinating requests that need different scopes.
    • Token retrieval is serialized when needed, while eligible cached tokens can be used immediately.
    • Requests waiting on token coordination can be cancelled, and failed or delayed requests no longer prevent later requests from proceeding.
    • API fetchers use the coordinated token flow when the authentication context supports it.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the documented minimum version of @auth0/auth0-react for the React integration to 2.15.1.

Components that mount together each ask for their own token, so several refreshes used the same
refresh token at once and the later ones were rejected. Token requests now go through one shared
queue so requests for different APIs take turns.

Single-page apps: a cached token is returned straight away and only a request that needs a refresh
waits in the queue. Server-side proxies: requests that arrive together are grouped by API, the first
of each group goes out first with the scopes of the group, and the others wait for its response.

A custom fetcher that throws straight away left the caller of a coordinated request waiting
forever, and the proxy fetcher stopped returning a rejected promise for it. Both are fixed and
covered by tests.

Walkthrough

The change adds a shared queue for token retrieval, coordinates token requests and scoped proxy requests, and connects the coordination logic to proxy and SPA fetchers. Tests cover queue behavior, request coordination, fetcher integration, and synchronous custom-fetcher errors. The documented minimum @auth0/auth0-react version changes to 2.15.1.

Changes: Token request coordination

Layer / File(s) Summary
Token queue and token contracts
packages/core/src/auth/auth-types.ts, packages/core/src/api/token-queue.ts, packages/core/src/api/__tests__/token-queue.test.ts, packages/core/src/api/__tests__/__mocks__/deferred.ts
Adds token response and silent-retrieval types, a shared queue with a hold limit, and waitFor. Tests cover queue ordering, task failures, timeout behavior, and the deferred-promise helper.
Token and proxy request coordination
packages/core/src/api/token-coordination.ts, packages/core/src/api/__tests__/token-coordination.test.ts
Adds cache-first token retrieval and proxy-request batching by audience. The first request uses deduplicated combined scopes; followers send with their own scopes. Tests cover grouping, error handling, aborts, and hold limits.
API fetcher integration
packages/core/src/api/api-utils.ts, packages/core/src/api/__tests__/api-utils.test.ts, packages/react/README.md, docs-site/src/pages/GettingStarted.tsx
Routes proxy requests through coordination and supplies the SPA fetcher with a coordinated token getter when silent token retrieval is available. Tests cover fetcher behavior and token coordination. The documentation raises the minimum React SDK version to 2.15.1.

Canceled requests can still contribute scopes to a queued leader request. This is a bounded cancellation edge case; exclude those scopes and add the regression test. No broader token-refresh failure was established.

Explanation

The title "fix(core): take turns when components request tokens together" matches the main change. The PR adds coordination in the shared fetcher so concurrent requests take turns instead of refreshing tokens at the same time. It uses the conventional-commit scope and is specific enough for a teammate scanning history to understand the primary change.

A proxied request that was aborted while waiting for its turn stayed pending until its turn came,
up to 20 seconds, and an already aborted request was still queued. Both now reject right away, as
fetch does, and the abort listener is removed once the request settles.

When the first request of a group fails, the session was not refreshed, yet every waiting request
went out together with the old session, which brought the refresh race back. The next request now
leads the rest, so only one request at a time can refresh. A response that is not a server error
counts as answered. waitFor now returns the outcome of the promise.

The peer range requires @auth0/auth0-react ^2.15.1 (so @auth0/auth0-spa-js ^2.17.1), but the React
README and the Getting Started page still said 2.0. Correct them, and note in the code which SDK
feature the coordinated token getter relies on.

The fetcher only accepts the detailed token response from @auth0/auth0-spa-js 2.7. Before that, its
token function had to return a string, so the object this getter returns would end up in the
authorization header.

@harishsundar-okta should we also introduce some flag or prop here which skips this mechanism?

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

sendUnlessAborted treats every response below 500 as proof that the leader succeeded. A proxy response such as 429 or an authentication-related 401 may occur before the session is refreshed, yet release all followers together.

Followers can make simultaneous refresh attempts against the old session, recreating the token race this change is meant to prevent.

This can occur when: A grouped leader receives a 4xx response from the proxy before it updates the session.

An aborted request rejects right away but stays in its group, so the leader's
request still carried its scope although nothing would ever send it. Build the
leader's scope from the requests that have not been aborted when it takes its
turn in the queue.
