Summary

Episodes that a duplicate feed already holds no longer fail the book bootstrap or come back to it on every catch-up. They are stamped with the show that holds their ID.

Motivation

Podcast Index sometimes lists one podcast under two show IDs, and both lists share the same episode IDs. The book gives each served ID to one episode, so:

  • the bootstrap's one-transaction write failed for a whole show when one of its points used an ID the other copy already serves (2 shows in production, 14 points);
  • stage 4 correctly deferred those episodes, but left their points unstamped, so the catch-up pass picked them up again and failed the same way.

All 234 deferrals in a re-check of a 1,810-show sync run were this case.

What changed

  • lib/book-bootstrap.js: planShow takes the current owners of the points' Podcast Index IDs. A point whose ID another key already serves gets no book row, so the show's transaction can't fail on it. If the owner is in the same show (a changed GUID under the same PI ID), the point is stamped with the owner's eid and catalog_key; if it is another show (a duplicate feed), it goes into shared and is stamped eid_shared with that show. The show's own episodes are still recorded in the same transaction.
  • bootstrap-book.js: loads the owners before planning, counts shared, and the catch-up skips points stamped eid_shared.
  • lib/episode-identity.js: a deferred episode is stamped with the owner's identity when the owner is in the same show, or eid_shared with the owning show otherwise, instead of nothing.

Behavior & compatibility

  • Listeners: no change. Point names and payload IDs stay as they are; only a new payload field is added.
  • Deploy: the sync runs outside GitHub Actions. After deploy, the next catch-up records the two failed shows and marks their 14 shared points.

Fixed

  • The episode book bootstrap no longer fails a show whose episodes a duplicate Podcast Index feed already holds; those episodes are marked with the show that holds them.

Test plan

  • npm run test:sync --prefix scripts: 143 tests. 3 are new: a duplicate feed's point is left to the owning show and stamped eid_shared while the rest of the show is recorded; a point whose ID another key of the same show serves is stamped with that key's identity and gets no row; and a deferred stage 4 episode is stamped with the owner's identity (same show) or eid_shared (other show).

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved handling of duplicate episode identifiers across shows.
    • Episodes already associated with another show are deferred instead of creating duplicate catalog entries.
    • Deferred episodes retain the owning show’s information for improved traceability.
    • Catch-up processing now includes points missing any identity-status markers.
  • Improvements

    • Bootstrap processing consistently recognizes shared-episode status and excludes shared episodes from the current show.
    • Progress reporting includes counts for episodes deferred as shared.

Episode identity resolution now stamps served-ID conflicts with the owning show. Book bootstrap excludes those shared episodes from new rows, stamps their ownership, and reports shared-point counts.

Changes: Duplicate Episode Ownership

Layer / File(s) Summary
Stamp deferred identity conflicts
scripts/sync/lib/episode-identity.js, scripts/sync/lib/episode-identity.test.js
Deferred served-ID conflicts receive an eid_shared stamp containing the owning show ID. Tests cover cross-show ownership and verify that no new row is created.
Exclude shared episodes during bootstrap
scripts/sync/lib/book-bootstrap.js, scripts/sync/bootstrap-book.js, scripts/sync/lib/book-bootstrap.test.js, scripts/README.md
planShow excludes points owned by another show and records their owner. Bootstrap creates eid_shared stamp operations, excludes shared points from catch-up selection, and reports shared-point counts. Tests and documentation describe this handling.

Some episodes already owned by a show could be excluded rather than recorded under their new catalog key. Handle that case before merging unless the risk is explicitly accepted.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title follows Conventional Commits with the allowed type and scope, uses imperative mood, and accurately describes the duplicate-feed fix. Its length is 73 characters, which is only slightly above the approximate 72-character target.

Full details: Architecture Compliance

Explanation

The reviewed changes are confined to the Node.js catalog-sync scripts and documentation. ARCHITECTURE.md governs the Android Gradle modules, and the diff adds no feature-to-feature dependency, PostHog usage, DI framework, second PlaybackRepository/AppContainer graph, catalog-to-designsystem/playback dependency, or Android identity/storage migration change.

Full details: Module Readme Updated

Explanation

The pull request changes only JavaScript, JavaScript tests, and scripts/README.md. It does not change production Kotlin under app/src/main/, core/<module>/src/main/, or feature/<module>/src/main/. Therefore, the module README requirement does not apply.

Full details: Jvm Tests For Changed Logic

Explanation

PASS: The PR changes only Node.js sync logic under scripts/ and adds matching Node test coverage in scripts/sync/lib/*.test.js. It does not change JVM production logic, so hermetic tests under src/test are not required by this check.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The pull request description directly explains the duplicate-feed episode handling, eid_shared stamping, bootstrap changes, catch-up behavior, compatibility impact, and test plan. It matches the changeset.

Full details: Unresolved Review Threads

Explanation

One newly generated CodeRabbit finding remains outstanding: scripts/sync/bootstrap-book.js:114 (Major) reports that same-show catalog-key changes are incorrectly classified as eid_shared. The supplied review state provides no resolution or dismissal. The earlier dry-run thread is resolved, but this finding still violates the check.

Resolution

Handle same-show ownership separately so eid_shared is used only when another show owns the served ID. Then mark the finding resolved, or explicitly dismiss it with a short rationale.
