Summary

New-episode notifications now carry a feed address that works and the episode's permanent ID, and the checker never sends the same notification twice after a partial failure.

Motivation

Play users are on builds that can't be updated yet, and notifications are one of the few things that reach them:

  • A followed show whose feed moved kept its dead address in every push, so the phone's refresh read the dead address. The Podcast Index fallback push carried no address at all.
  • Pushes carried Podcast Index episode IDs, which can change; the rest of the API now serves permanent IDs for those episodes.
  • An unchanged decision could move the RSS key forward without saving it, and a run that stopped part-way saved nothing, so pushes could repeat.

What changed

  • Addresses: at the start of a run the checker asks the boxlore API for each catalog show's working address. A confirmed address replaces a dead registered one for the RSS check and in the push. The first read of a different address is a quiet baseline (rss-address-changed), since a moved feed can relabel old episodes.
  • Episode IDs: before sending, the checker asks the API for the episode's served ID and puts it in episodeId and route. Without one (or if the API fails) the push opens the show.
  • State: every change is saved, the file is written even if the run stops early, the commit step always runs, and a failed push is retried next run instead of being skipped or repeated.
  • Safety: new-episode pushes only go to new_ep_… topics; broadcast topics are refused with a test. A manual run can set dry_run to decide and log without sending or saving; logs never include feed addresses.
  • The workflow passes the new BOXLORE_SVC_NOTIFIER_KEY secret (already set). Without it the checker behaves as before.

Behavior & compatibility

  • Listeners: notifications keep the same fields; old builds already read feedUrl, episodeId and route. Served IDs are answered by the API's /episode route.
  • Deploy: the workflow runs on master every 30 minutes.

Fixed

  • New-episode notifications carry a working feed address for shows that moved, use stable episode IDs, and are never sent twice after a partly failed check.

README What's New / Upcoming (required for user-impact changes)

  • New-episode notifications keep working for shows that moved to a new feed address.

Test plan

  • npm run test:check-new-episodes --prefix scripts: 44 tests. 6 are new: a confirmed address wins and the dump only fills in, the first read of a moved feed is quiet and later releases notify, the fallback push carries the address, an unchanged decision that moves the key is saved, served IDs replace PI IDs (or the push opens the show), and broadcast topics are refused.
  • Rehearsal run (dry_run) on this branch against production data.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added optional notifier integration for resolving working feed addresses and served episode IDs.
    • Added manual dry-run mode to preview notifications without sending them or saving state.
    • Added retry handling for failed notifications and clearer failure reporting.
    • Added safeguards to restrict notifications to valid new-episode topics.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Feed address changes now establish a quiet baseline to prevent duplicate notifications.
    • Episode-check state is saved even when checks encounter errors.
  • Documentation

    • Documented notifier configuration, feed and episode resolution, retries, and dry-run behavior.

The episode checker now uses optional notifier API data to select working feeds and route notifications to served episode IDs. It validates notification topics, supports non-persistent dry runs, and saves state after processing, including when notification attempts fail.

Changes: Episode notifier integration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Feed resolution and notification data
scripts/check-new-episodes-lib.js, scripts/check-new-episodes-lib.test.js
Release resolution uses registry and remembered feed addresses. Release data includes episode identity, Podcast Index payloads include the working feed URL, and message construction validates topics and served episode routes. Tests cover feed selection, quiet baselines, state changes, routing, and topic validation.
Lookup, notification, and state handling
scripts/check-new-episodes.js
The checker uses registry lookups and served episode IDs when available, with fallback behavior when lookups fail. Dry-run mode logs without sending or saving state. State writes occur after processing, and notification failures affect retry behavior and process exit status.
Workflow inputs and operating documentation
.github/workflows/new-episode-check.yml, scripts/README.md
The workflow exposes a manual dry_run input, passes optional notifier credentials, and runs the state commit step after failures. The documentation describes notifier behavior and dry-run handling.

Explanation

The description clearly explains the working feed addresses, stable episode IDs, state persistence, dry-run support, topic validation, workflow secret, compatibility, and test results. It is directly related to the changeset.

Full details: Unresolved Review Threads

Explanation

No unresolved review threads remain. Both previously reported CodeRabbit threads have discussion status resolved, and the current review reports zero actionable findings. Prior failure addressed: The two prior findings are now marked discussion=resolved: the feed-address finding and the malformed-topic handling finding.

Full details: Architecture Compliance

Explanation

No architecture violation is introduced. The PR changes only Node.js notification scripts, workflow configuration, documentation, and tests. The diff has no Android feature-module dependency or import, PostHog usage, Hilt/Koin/Dagger/MockK, PlaybackRepository, AppContainer, catalog, designsystem, or playback change. The added notifier state field is additive JSON state, and the served episode ID is a handle used by the existing notification route; no ARCHITECTURE.md identity or storage contract is renamed or recreated.

Full details: Module Readme Updated

Explanation

The pull request changes only workflow, JavaScript, JavaScript test, and scripts README files. It does not change production Kotlin under app/src/main/, core/<module>/src/main/, or feature/<module>/src/main/. The module README requirement is therefore not triggered.

Full details: Jvm Tests For Changed Logic

Explanation

The PR changes only Node.js notification scripts, a Node.js test file, documentation, and a GitHub workflow. It does not change JVM production logic under the Android/Kotlin source tree. The added regression coverage is the appropriate scripts/check-new-episodes-lib.test.js Node test, so this JVM-test check is not applicable.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Persist each state change before polling the next show.

state.podcasts[stateId] changes only in memory. The file is written only after the loop reaches finally. If the Actions process is canceled while awaiting a later feed or notification request, finally does not run. The next run can send the earlier notification again. Write the state immediately after each change, while preserving the dry-run guard.
