Description
Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
We set up a Capacitor app with SPM instead of Cocoa pods. Therefor this library doesn't work for us.
Describe the solution you'd like
A Package.swift file/ SPM support
For now i forked this library and somehow managed to get this working, but honestly I don't feel super safe about it, as I also had to mess with SQLCipher. Links I followed:

This would be a great addition

@marius-se Do you mind sharing your fork? Would offer a good starting place for investigating this feature.
mtnair commentedon Aug 27, 2025
Any chance of this getting implemented at some point?
abegehr commentedon Aug 27, 2025
@marius-se to the rescue 🥇

CocoaPods announced that its Specs repo will become read-only in May 2025 and no new podspecs will be accepted after that. Are there any plans to support Swift Package Manager, or has anyone already managed to set it up?
easpinall commentedon Dec 15, 2025
With Capacitor 8 using SPM by default and other Capacitor plugins no longer supporting CocoaPods, we need your assistance in releasing a SPM based version of the package please
robingenz commentedon Dec 15, 2025
PRs are welcome, but as far as I know, https://github.com/sqlcipher/sqlcipher/ does not officially support SPM.
easpinall commentedon Dec 16, 2025
Hi Robin
If I'm not mistaken the SPM version is sitting at https://github.com/sqlcipher/sqlcipher.swift that was introduced by Zetetic
Some more background available at https://www.zetetic.net/sqlcipher/sqlcipher-apple-integrators/
robingenz commentedon Dec 16, 2025
Would you be willing to create a PR?
paulstelzer commentedon Dec 18, 2025
Created a PR. Would be great if others could test it too.
PS: There is also a new plugin by @robingenz which seems to have SPM Support out of the box at https://github.com/capawesome-team/capacitor-plugins/tree/main/packages/sqlite, but unfortunately it is not open source, so I cannot say something about the quality and features.
robingenz commentedon Dec 18, 2025
@paulstelzer Thank you! I will take a look and create a dev release for testing.
Also, thank you for mentioning the Capawesome SQLite plugin. It maintains the same quality as all our Insider plugins. The most significant difference lies in the improved web support with SQLite WASM and the fact that we do NOT utilise SQLCipher for unencrypted databases. This offers the advantage of not being subject to encryption export regulations and not needing to submit an annual self-classification report to the U.S. government.
EDIT: See #673 for the dev release.

Hi folks, Q. Do we have an estimate on when this feature will be merged?
ebarolo commentedon Mar 5, 2026
up
kensentell commentedon Mar 16, 2026
I tested this in my Capacitor 8 project for iOS (Android too just to be sure) and it worked without issues. Any estimated date for merge/release into the main code?
robingenz commentedon Mar 17, 2026
I will merge the PR as soon as all merge conflicts and comments are resolved.
robingenz commentedon Mar 18, 2026
I had to create a new PR for this feature. Please test this new dev release and let me know if you spot any bugs:

I installed the dev release and it works for me! The packages were installed automatically and now the database works on my iOS device. Thanks for all your work!
jacobg commentedon Mar 24, 2026
@robingenz Thanks! Works great for me! I endorse official release 😄
robingenz commentedon Mar 24, 2026
I'm waiting for feedback this week, and then I'll release it.
gion-andri commentedon Mar 25, 2026
I updated our app to that dev release and it seems to work perfectly. Thank you very much for your work ❤️
