Follow redirects safely and close provider generation gaps - #121
Generated clients follow redirects again on requests without a body, and only send caller headers to the same origin:
fetchFollowingRedirects(method, uri, headers, payload)
if payload
fetch once, redirects unhandled
loop up to 3 redirects
send request, with headers only while the origin is unchanged
301/302/303/307/308 with Location
move to the target
if scheme, host or port changed, drop all caller headers
otherwise return the decompressed body
error.TooManyHttpRedirects
This uses a manual loop because Zig 0.17 stores privileged_headers but never sends them, so moving credentials there would remove Authorization from every request.
Area
Change
additionalProperties
Only true becomes std.json.Value; schema-valued ones keep typed structs in every version
Resource wrappers
Adds {method}Stream and {method}StreamEvents when they don't collide; {operationId}Stream stays
info.version
Missing gives unknown in 2.0, 3.0, 3.1 and 3.2; a non-string gives error.InvalidInfoVersion
Stream detection on 3.0 and 3.2
Honors enum: [false] and resolves reusable request bodies, including aliases
allOf on 3.2
Flattened by the converter, with cycles stopped
Evidence
Before: generated clients returned the 301 for a renamed GitHub repository, which broke chlogr. A spec without info.version panicked in the parser. After:provider_http_tests.zig covers keeping headers on the same origin, dropping them on a host or port change, and the 3-redirect limit. Deliberately leaking headers makes the host and port tests fail.
puny, regenerated from this branch: Google patches apply, build passes, 1704/1773 passed with 69 skipped, the same as v0.6.0.
chlogr, regenerated from this branch: build passes, 26/26 tests pass, and --repo christianhelle/chlogr writes a changelog. --repo Homebrew/homebrew follows the 301 and fetches 338 pull request pages, then stops with error.GitHubApiError on closed issues. v0.6.0 fails the same way at the same point.
Not tested:
Dropping headers on an https-to-http redirect, because the test server has no TLS
puny's test-integration
Real Anthropic streaming calls
Cross-host redirects against real services
Merge Danger
Door: two-way
Revert restores the current generator. Clients already regenerated would need regenerating again.
Blast Radius: consumers
Cross-origin redirects drop all caller headers, including Accept and default_headers, so a client that relies on them after such a redirect will see different behavior.
Regenerating 3.0 and 3.2 specs can change signatures for operations with reusable request bodies and for allOf models.
Schema-valued additionalProperties fields change from std.json.Value back to typed structs.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Generated clients follow up to three redirects for requests without a body. Credentials and caller headers are forwarded only when the redirect stays on the same scheme, host, and port; requests with a body do not follow redirects.
Streaming operations may be available through wrapper-based method names when those names do not conflict with generated declarations.
Improvements
Schema conversion supports flattened allOf properties and required fields, and typed structs for named properties with schema-valued additional properties. Undeclared keys are ignored when parsing.
Missing version information is handled consistently across supported specification formats.
Documentation
Clarified how additional properties and HTTP redirects are handled.

The OpenAPI 3.2 converter merges allOf properties and required names and resolves component schema and request-body aliases. Tests cover merged schemas and streaming detection through references and allOf.
Streaming POST wrappers retain operation-ID methods and can also generate methods from the wrapper name. Tests check generated names and allocation failure handling. The README updates its SSE cancellation description.
Bodiless requests use a helper that follows up to three redirects and drops caller headers when the origin changes. Tests cover redirect behavior, method changes, origin comparison, and the redirect limit. The README documents the HTTP behavior.

Explanation
The title names two themes in the changeset: safer redirect following (manual loop for bodiless requests, three-redirect limit, caller headers dropped on origin change) and closing provider generation gaps (streaming aliases, typed additionalProperties, info.version handling, OpenAPI 3.2 allOf flattening). Both appear in the raw summary and objectives. The title is concise and specific enough that a teammate scanning history would understand the primary change. The phrase "provider generation gaps" is somewhat broad, so the title is not a perfect summary of every item, which the check allows.

isSameOrigin compares raw optional ports, potentially treating an implicit default port and the equivalent explicit port as different origins and unnecessarily dropping caller headers.
A same-origin redirected request may fail authentication or required header checks.
This can occur when: An HTTPS request to https://api.example redirects to https://api.example:443/path, or the corresponding HTTP port-80 case.

Assert the generated Integration.permissions field.
Assert the generated Integration.permissions field.
The positive check matches pub const Permissions = struct {. The top-level Permissions schema in the same test input can produce that declaration, so the check does not require the inline permissions field. The negative check rejects only permissions: ?std.json.Value. A generated Integration that omits permissions, or types it as ?[]const u8, still passes.
Add an assertion that checks the permissions field declaration inside the generated Integration struct, matching the typed output that the test name describes. The exact expected text depends on the emitter in src/generators/unified/model_generator/fields.zig, so confirm that text before writing the assertion.
The compile fixture in src/tests/compile_provider_schema_fixture.zig does not cover this path in the inspected lines.

Update the provider schema test assertions on `code` to verify that the
generated `Integration` struct contains its `permissions` field with the type
emitted for the inline field. Confirm the exact declaration in the `fields.zig`
emitter before asserting it; do not rely on the top-level `Permissions`
declaration or merely reject `std.json.Value`.
expectMergedAllOf checks that required has two entries and that id appears once. It does not check the second entry. A converter that emits ["id", "<wrong name>"] passes these checks. The v3.2 test calls this helper, so it inherits the gap. The v3.0 and v3.1 fixtures declare the same required names, so the same check applies to those tests.

Update expectRedirectKeepsCredentials and the redirect-call groups so generated
GET operations assert Authorization is present on the origin hop, in addition to
checking that credentials match across same-origin redirects. Keep requestRaw
calls in a separate group without requiring Authorization, and preserve coverage
of both generated and raw calls in the cross-origin credential-drop checks.

Redirect Location bytes accumulate across hops and can reject a valid chain.
location_buffer is one 8 KiB slice shared by all redirect hops, and resolveInPlace advances it past each stored Location. The guard on line 264 therefore compares each new Location with the bytes left after earlier hops, not with the full 8192-byte limit. Two Location values of about 4.5 KiB each can fail with HttpRedirectLocationOversize on the second redirect, although the chain stays within the three-redirect limit.
Each hop needs storage that does not overwrite the current URI until the next hop is resolved.

Carry array type and items from allOf members into the merged schema.

Carry array type and items from allOf members into the merged schema.
convertAllOfSchema takes type and items only from the composing schema. A $ref member that resolves to an array of strings is converted, but its array type and items are dropped. The merged schema then becomes an object with no items, so the generated model no longer matches the referenced array.

Exercise document-level conversion under allocation failure.
exerciseSchemaConversion calls convertSchema on each component. It does not call convertSchemas or convert, so a failure on a later component is not tested at the document level. convertSchemas also has no errdefer, so earlier converted schemas can leak. Merge nested allOf property schemas instead of replacing them.
takeProperties replaces an earlier member's property schema when a later member defines the same name. The earlier schema's nested required and properties are dropped. The composing schema's own properties use the same replacement. A property that two allOf members constrain must keep the constraints of both members.
Scope of the fix
A safe fix must merge the nested properties and required lists recursively. A simpler alternative is to return an error when two members define the same property with different object schemas. The inspected source does not establish a smaller localized edit, so no diff is proposed.

Reconcile Maybe nullability with its allOf member.
The Maybe assertion expects nullable to be true. Make nullability intersect the typed members, then update this assertion to match.

Update convertAllOfSchema to derive nullability from the intersection of the
outer schema and its typed allOf members, so an object member that rejects null
makes the combined schema non-nullable. Then update the Maybe assertion to
expect the result of that intersection.

Not changed: strict intersection would make type: ["object", "null"] and nullable: true next to allOf non-nullable, and generated clients would then reject null responses for that common pattern. Keeping the outer declaration is the safer choice for a client. Leaving this open for the maintainer to decide.

@christianhelle Understood. Preserving the outer nullability declaration is an intentional client-compatibility choice here. My finding applied strict JSON Schema validation without accounting for that tradeoff.
I accept leaving the code unchanged pending the maintainer’s decision. The thread can remain open for that decision.
Add a credential-header test for a same-origin redirect followed by a cross-origin redirect.
The redirect tests in src/tests/provider_http_tests.zig cover one cross-origin hop, one same-origin hop, and a same-origin chain that stops at the redirect limit. No test covers a same-origin hop followed by a cross-origin hop. A change that evaluates the origin only on the first redirect hop would still pass the current suite.
Add a test with an origin that redirects to itself, then to a target on a different host or port. Assert the following:
The origin receives the default header on both origin requests.
The final target receives neither Authorization nor the default header.
RedirectHop needs per-redirect locations for this chain. Keep the existing single location behavior for current tests.
The test must release every server thread on failure. If the call fails before the origin receives both requests, unblock the origin listener as well as the target. If the target thread fails to spawn after the origin thread starts, unblock the origin listener before joining it.

The redirect tests do not verify credential handling across a same-origin
redirect followed by a cross-origin redirect. Add focused coverage alongside the
existing redirect tests and ensure the redirect logic around remaining_redirects
evaluates credential forwarding for each hop; preserve the current
single-location behavior in RedirectHop.

Keep the narrower items type when allOf array members conflict.
In convertAllOfSchema, each array member replaces the items set by the previous member. For members [integer items, number items], the result is number. The generated field becomes []const f64, which accepts fractional values that the integer member forbids. For the reverse order, the result is i64, so the output depends on member order. Choose the intersection of the member item types. For integer and number, that intersection is integer. Add a test for both orders.

The array-item handling in convertAllOfSchema currently replaces earlier item
types with later ones; combine conflicting member item types by intersection so
the result is order-independent and preserves the narrower constraint, including
integer as the intersection of integer and number. Add tests covering both
member orders.

Not changed: conflicting array members follow the same rule as properties, where the later definition replaces the earlier one. Conflicting item types in allOf are rare, and intersecting them would need a schema solver this flattening does not attempt. Leaving this open for the maintainer to decide.

@christianhelle Understood. The code confirms that conflicting array items use the same later-definition-wins rule as properties. This leaves an order-dependent limitation, but I accept your decision not to add intersection handling here. The finding remains open for the maintainer’s decision.
