I'm Chaitanya Raj Shah, a Data Science & AI student at Honors College Florida International University.
I like working on problems where math, AI, data, and real-world decision making come together. Most of the time I'm either building something, learning something new, teaching someone, or somehow doing all three at once ๐ญ
I'm especially interested in machine learning, statistical modeling, LLMs, RAG, agentic AI, and understanding the math behind the models instead of just calling .fit() and hoping for the best.
Right now, I'm an AI/ML Research Assistant in the Saeed Lab at FIU, where I work with real-world datasets and computational research problems.
I'm also part of the Break Through Tech AI Fellowship, and I'm currently working on a KPMG- AI Studio project involving research retrieval, RAG, LLMs, and turning technical AI research into useful business insights.
Research is something I've started enjoying a lot because I like asking questions where the answer isn't obvious yet.
This is probably one of the biggest parts of my college experience.
I've spent almost two years working as a Teaching/Learning Assistant, mostly in math and computer science.
I've helped students with things like:
- ๐ Calculus I & II
- ๐งฎ Precalculus
- ๐ป Data Structures
- ๐ Programming
- ๐ค Introductory AI concepts
I also worked as a STARS Tutor for Data Structures.
Before college, I spent a lot of time volunteering as a tutor and mentor at a girls' orphanage, so teaching has been part of my life for a while.
I genuinely enjoy that moment when someone goes from
"I have no idea what this means"
to
"wait... that's actually not that bad." ๐ญ
I also just really like math.
Learning math, teaching math, doing math for absolutely no reason... all of it.
One thing I've learned is that building a technically good model is only part of the problem.
I like thinking about:
What decision does this actually help someone make?
That's why I've enjoyed competing in business and analytics competitions too.
๐ AIS ร ATOM Business Analytics Competition
My team built ChargeForward, an EV-focused analytics project, and received recognition for Best Business Analytics Project.
๐ [https://github.com/cr-shah/chargeforward-ev-analytics]
๐ Blackstone LaunchPad โ Idea to Impact
Placed 3rd and received $3,000 through the competition.
These experiences made me really interested in the space between technical work and actual business impact.
I know this sounds slightly questionable, but I genuinely enjoy math ๐ญ
Calculus, probability, statistics, discrete math, optimization โ I like understanding why things work.
That's also one reason I enjoy machine learning so much. Under all the Python libraries and APIs, there's a lot of really beautiful math.
Teaching it has made me appreciate it even more.
Python ยท SQL ยท Java
Pandas ยท NumPy ยท Scikit-learn
Jupyter ยท Git ยท GitHub
Currently spending more time with:
Machine Learning ยท LLMs ยท RAG ยท Agentic AI ยท Statistical Modeling ยท Deep Learning
I do have hobbies that do not involve a dataset ๐ญ
๐ I love playing table tennis
๐ธ I play badminton
๐จโ๐ซ I actually enjoy teaching
๐ฆธ Huge Marvel fan
โ๏ธ Big anime fan
๐ I like learning random things just because they seem interesting
And yes, I can probably find a way to bring AI or math into a completely unrelated conversation.
I'm still learning a lot and trying different areas of AI and data science.
Long term, I want to become really strong in AI/ML research and applied machine learning โ someone who understands both the theory and how to build systems that actually work in the real world.
This GitHub is basically where I'm documenting that process.
Thanks for stopping by :)
