What

The site and the README told a visitor "no installer" and "nothing is written to the registry". That is true of the two zips and stops being true of the release that carries the .msi, which writes the program into Program Files, a Start menu entry, chrono on the machine PATH, an entry in Settings, Apps and the key HKLM\Software\DonislawDev\Chrono Mock.

  • Download page. The .msi has its own row in the file table and is named in the subtitle. "What it leaves behind" gets a paragraph saying exactly what the installer adds and what uninstalling leaves alone, and naming the one option that writes a registry value, --elevated-embedded, which the page had never mentioned. Title and description (the search result) change with it.
  • Home page. The two badges under the buttons ("No installer", "No administrator rights") and the line under "Get it".
  • FAQ. The answer to "Do I need administrator rights?", and the Electron answer, which still said the session follows the host time zone.
  • README. The feature list, the download table (with the .msi row) and the paragraph under it, which now describes the installer: what it installs, what it adds, what uninstalling keeps, and exit code 3010.

All 22 languages for the site. English is the source and the other twenty-one follow it. The README is English only.

How it was measured

  • Every edit named an anchor that had to match exactly once per language (the position of a badge, the first question, the paragraph that holds %LOCALAPPDATA%), or the whole run stopped before writing anything. 68 files changed.
  • The site's own tests (20 and 18), the hygiene guards and the installer guards pass.
  • What the page says the installer adds is what the installer does: the measurement of the unsigned 0.4.0 installer passes on a clean Windows Server 2025 machine (101 checks) and on a development PC (102 checks), including the registry key, the PATH entry, the Start menu entry and what uninstalling leaves.

What this does not cover

  • These pages go live the moment this merges and describe a file that exists only once the release is published, so the merge waits until 0.4.0 is out. The size in the new table row (about 58 MB) is the unsigned installer's, to be checked against the published file.
  • The sizes already in the pages ("about 1.6 MB" for the command line, "about 69 MB" for the window, which are 2.35 and 70.1 MiB now) are not touched here.
  • The twenty-one translations were written by the same author as the English and have not been read by a native speaker.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a signed Windows MSI installer for the desktop app and CLI, with Start menu and PATH entries. Installation requires administrator rights; running the app does not.
    • Download pages now explain how the installer differs from portable ZIP packages, including what uninstalling removes and what data it preserves.
  • Documentation
    • Updated FAQs to clarify administrator requirements and explain time-zone behavior and limitations in Electron apps.

…say there is an installer and what it writes

The site and the README told a visitor "no installer" and "nothing is written to the registry".
That is true of the two zips and stops being true of the release that carries the .msi: the
installer writes the program into Program Files, a Start menu entry, chrono on the machine PATH, an
entry in Settings, Apps and the key HKLM\Software\DonislawDev\Chrono Mock.

The download page now offers the .msi beside the zips, with its own row in the file table, and a
paragraph in "What it leaves behind" that names exactly what the installer adds and what uninstalling
leaves alone. That section also names the one option that writes a registry value, --elevated-embedded,
which the page had never mentioned. The page title and description, the badges and the "Get it" line
on the home page, and the FAQ answer to "Do I need administrator rights?" say the same thing: nothing
to run needs administrator rights, the zips write nothing to the registry, and the installer needs
them once, to install. The README says it in its feature list, its download table and the paragraph
under it.

The FAQ answer about Electron and Chromium said the session follows the host time zone. That stopped
being true when the pages were put on the session zone, so it now says what is true and names the
Electron main process, which keeps the real clock.

Every anchor was matched exactly once per language before anything was written, and the site's own
tests and the hygiene and installer guards pass. The English text is the source and the other
twenty-one languages follow it.

These pages go live when this merges, and they describe a file that exists only once the release is
published, so the merge waits for the release.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The README and localized pages now document portable ZIP packages and a signed MSI installer. The pages describe MSI installation scope, permissions, system changes, and removal. Localized Electron FAQs also describe how time handling differs between the main process and pages or workers.

Changes

Windows distribution documentation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Distribution options and downloads
README.md, site/pages/home/*, site/pages/download/*
The pages present ZIP packages as portable options and add the signed MSI to the download information. They distinguish administrator rights required for installation from the ability to run the app.
Installer footprint and removal
README.md, site/pages/download/*
The documentation lists MSI installation files and system entries, describes uninstall cleanup and preserved local data, and explains the optional --elevated-embedded registry value. The README also documents upgrades and exit code 3010 when file replacement is deferred until restart.
Localized installation-permission FAQs
site/pages/faq/*
The administrator-rights answers distinguish running ZIP packages from installing the MSI for all accounts on the machine.

Electron time-handling FAQ

Layer / File(s) Summary
Electron process time-handling explanation
site/pages/faq/*
The localized answers state that Electron’s main process retains the real clock, while pages and workers use the session time zone. Several answers also say the report identifies the main-process limitation.

Full details: Clear User-Facing Text

Explanation

The PR introduces inconsistent names for the same two components. The README calls the GUI both “desktop app” and “window” (README.md lines 65, 73–78), and calls the CLI both “command line” and “CLI”. The download page similarly uses “window”, “desktop application”, “command line”, and “command-line tool” (site/pages/download/en.html lines 9, 28–39, 70–71). Users must infer that these terms identify the same downloads.

Resolution

Use one term for each component in all user-facing text. For example, use “desktop app” and “command-line tool” in the README, download page, home page, metadata, and all translations. Replace “window” when it means the Chrono Mock desktop app, and replace standalone “command line” or “CLI” when it means the command-line tool. Keep “window” only for an actual application window.

Correct the upgrade timeline.

The installer manifest says the new file goes into place immediately when an old copy is held open. The old copy remains until restart. Line 80 instead says the held file is replaced at restart. Describe the immediate replacement and deferred cleanup separately, so users know when the upgrade takes effect. As per path instructions, “Check that documentation matches the actual code in this PR.”

Review comment at @README.md at line 80:
Update the upgrade-timeline wording in the README so it states that the new file
is installed immediately while the running program continues using the old copy,
which is cleaned up after restart. Keep immediate replacement and deferred
cleanup distinct.

Qualify the ZIP registry claim.

The description says ZIP builds “write nothing to the registry.” README.md Lines 68-71 documents an opt-in ZIP use that does write a temporary registry value. Say that ZIP use makes no registry changes by default, and name the --elevated-embedded exception. Apply the same qualification to the corresponding home, download, FAQ, and localized metadata copy; each currently repeats the absolute claim. As per path instructions, “Content matches the current app.”

Review comment at @site/pages/download/page.json at line 14:
Update the ZIP registry claim in the download description and corresponding
home, FAQ, and localized metadata copy to say ZIP use makes no registry changes
by default, naming `--elevated-embedded` as the exception. Keep each description
aligned with the current app.
