What

The first run of every mutation entry in CI (the run on #112, 745 entries in sixteen parts) came back:

verdict entries
caught 693
MISSED 17
BROKEN 1
BASELINE RED 1
NOT HERE 33

Each of the nineteen that were neither caught nor NOT HERE had a cause. This PR fixes each one in the guard, or in the entry where the entry no longer said what it was named for. No mutation was changed to fit a test.

finding cause fix
11 shim entries MISSED the Node scenarios did not check what the old harness outside the repository did new checks in cdp::shim_exec (constructor, Date() text and count, formatToParts, zone read past a replaced Date, second install with a change to come, foreign marker untouched, first read past a change, wall corrected past the instant, zone after release)
r4-6 r1 first look detaches MISSED opening a file arms a thread-pool timer inside Windows through the timer detour, which started the watcher during the session (measured with a stack taken in the hook) the probe waits on a named mutex and reads the clock before it writes anything
r4-16b reset before release MISSED the fake browser answered the busy page's count the moment its release arrived fake_browser_paced answers a held reply once the client has gone quiet
guards window background off the palette MISSED the cards alone cover 50.8% of the window, so "our grounds cover more than half" passed with the base gone no single colour outside the grounds may cover a tenth of the window (largest measured 0.5%)
two wire_keys entries MISSED the UNREACHED list they were judged through is empty the both-ends check is a function with a test on a planted list
pr-a complaint without the element text MISSED the known-defect list it was judged through is empty the spill rule's test asks for the words in the complaint
N36 BROKEN the decision moved to a function where the civil time is not in scope the entry makes the same mistake where it is
r4-13 s24 start despite close BASELINE RED the runner built the test projects only, and the test reads the sample target a part with a C# entry builds the whole solution, as CI does, and the entry asks for the release cores

The session close test also passed with no core built, because then nothing could start. It now fails and says the core is missing.

Measured

  • Each of the nineteen entries locally with -Only: all caught.
  • The runner change reverted on a copy, with the sample target taken away: the entry was BASELINE RED again.
  • The release cores taken away: the close test passed before, and fails now with its own message.
  • mutate.ps1 -SelfTest and report.ps1 -SelfTest green. The fifteen reversal probes of the runner still turn its self test red.
  • Gates for the changed areas 10/10 (Rust 1075, C# 875), PowerShell lint 178 files.

The runner changed, so this PR's mutation run selects every entry. That run is the check of the whole registry.

Review round

  • The drift scenario now also asks for the rate after the wall correction. Measured with the rate change taken out of settle: "does not step back" still passed, and the new check fails (60000 where 1000 is due).
  • fake_browser_paced no longer reads a socket after a receive timed out, which Winsock documents as leaving the connection in an indeterminate state. A thread of its own reads with plain blocking reads, and the quiet is a timed wait on what it hands over. All 188 CDP tests pass on it.
  • The late-read test waits for the core with a deadline. A core that came to wait for its target would otherwise hold the test for good. On the deadline the gate opens, the core is killed and the test fails with what the core said. Measured with the deadline set to 300 ms: it fails in 0.3 s and leaves no process behind.

Not in this PR

The full mutation run on the first commit read the flaky held::tests::a_view_is_unmapped_unless_the_session_takes_it as red before any mutation in two parts, so two chrono-mech entries came back BASELINE RED. The test asks whether anything is mapped at a freed address while the other tests of its binary map memory in parallel. That fix is a change of its own.

The timer detour counts, and in a session that scales durations scales, a thread-pool timer that Windows arms inside CreateFileW. That is a separate question about coverage and scaling, not about these guards.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

…id not catch, each caught now by a stronger guard or a re-anchored entry

The first run of every entry in CI (745 entries, sixteen parts) came back 693 caught, 17 MISSED,
1 BROKEN, 1 BASELINE RED and 33 NOT HERE. Each of the nineteen had a cause, and each entry is caught
now, measured locally with -Only.

- Shim, eleven entries: the Node scenarios did not check what the old harness outside the repository
did. New checks: a date built from a date's own constructor, Date() in the engine's words when the
page replaced the prototype's toString, Intl formatToParts for now, Date() counted, the zone read
through the engine's Date when the page replaced Date, a second install carrying a change still to
come, a foreign __chronomock left as the page made it, performance.now or a timer as the first clock
read past a scheduled change, the duration axis not stepping back when a correction of the wall
carries it past the instant, and a page let go judged against no zone. The harness gets drift().
- The hook's first look (session_identity): the probe reached a detour before the end. Measured with a
stack taken in the hook: opening a file arms a thread-pool timer inside Windows, through the timer
detour, which starts the watcher while the session runs, so with the first look taken out the late
read was real all the same. The probe now waits on a named mutex the test holds until the core has
gone (a wait on an object is only counted), reads the clock first and writes its lines after.
- The release order (cdp_attach): the fake browser answered the busy page's count the moment its
release arrived, so an attacher that gave the zone back right after sending the release went
through. fake_browser_paced answers a held reply once the client has gone quiet.
- The window background: the cards and the base cover 46.8% and 45.5% of the window, so with the base
gone the grounds still came to 50.8% and the share above half passed. No single colour outside the
grounds may now cover a tenth of the window, where the largest measured is 0.5%.
- wire_keys: the both-ends check of UNREACHED runs over a list that is empty today, so its two entries
had nothing to judge. The check is a function with a test on a planted list, and the entries mutate
  the function.
- The layout complaint: the known-defect list it was judged by is empty. The spill rule's test now asks
for the words in the complaint, and the entry is judged by that test.
- N36 (BROKEN): the decision moved to reading_shows_time, where the civil time is not in scope. The
entry makes the same mistake in reading_text.
- BASELINE RED: the session close test reads the sample target, which the runner did not build. A part
with a C# entry now builds the whole solution, as CI does before its C# tests (with that reverted on
a copy of the runner and the target taken away, the entry was BASELINE RED again). The entry asks for
the release cores, and the test itself now fails when the core is missing instead of passing because
nothing could start - measured, with the core taken away it passed before and fails now.

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request expands clock-shim and CDP test coverage, makes a late session-identity read deterministic, tightens translation and GUI guard assertions, and updates mutation targets and C# solution build behavior in the mutation runner.

Changes: Clock shim test coverage

Layer / File(s) Summary
Date, zone, and installation checks
crates/cli/src/cdp/shim_exec.rs
Tests cover session Date construction and formatting, zone reads after page replacement of Date, marker preservation, and zone auditing after release.
Scheduled rate changes
crates/cli/src/cdp/shim_exec.rs, crates/cli/src/cdp/shim_harness.js
Tests cover scheduled changes first observed through performance.now() or a timer, wall-clock correction, and a pending change across installation. The harness can advance wall and performance clocks independently without running timers.

Paced CDP test browser

Layer / File(s) Summary
Paced browser request handling
crates/cli/src/cdp/mod.rs, crates/cli/src/cdp/ws.rs, crates/cli/src/cdp_attach.rs
The test helper adds optional quiet-period callbacks. The attachment test delays a release reply until after the held count reply.

Session identity timing test

Layer / File(s) Summary
Gate the post-exit clock read
crates/cli/tests/session_identity.rs
The probe waits on a named mutex before reading the clock. The test drains process output, waits for core exit, and then opens the gate.

Translation reachability checks

Layer / File(s) Summary
Validate unreached translation keys
crates/cli/tests/wire_keys.rs, tests/mutation/entries.json
A helper reports excused keys that are absent or reached again. Tests cover both failures and a valid unreached key, and mutation entries target these checks.

GUI guard assertions

Layer / File(s) Summary
Background and layout guard checks
gui/ChronoMock.App.Tests/BackgroundGuardTests.cs, gui/ChronoMock.App.Tests/LayoutGuardTests.cs, tests/mutation/entries.json
The background test adds a limit for non-ground color coverage. The layout test checks that the spill complaint names the overflowing text, and its mutation target now uses that test.

Mutation runner updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Build and mutation target updates
gui/ChronoMock.App.Tests/SessionCloseTests.cs, tests/mutation/entries.json, tests/mutation/mutate.ps1
The session-close test checks for the sample substitution core. Mutation entries update session-close and time-display analysis targets. The mutation runner builds gui/ChronoMock.slnx when a selected part has C# entries.

Change: Other

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 443ea

This change only touches tests and the mutation runner. One test can hang rather than fail if a future regression occurs. Another test may be flaky because it reuses a socket after a read timeout. One new check is weaker than intended. These are worth fixing but carry little production risk.

Full details: Tests For Changed Behavior

Explanation

PASS. The pull request does not change production runtime behavior. Rust CDP changes are inside #[cfg(test)] modules or test-only re-exports, and the JavaScript harness is test input. The C# files update tests, while entries.json and mutate.ps1 change mutation-test tooling. The diff adds or strengthens coverage, including shim cases, paced renderer ordering, translation checks, background-color detection, complaint text, and release-core presence. No tests are deleted or skipped, and no assertion is weakened.

Full details: No Secrets Or Debug Leftovers

Explanation

The PR changes only the 12 listed source and test files. The diff adds no CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md, .claude/, or .env files. Scans of added lines found no credentials, tokens, private URLs, absolute local paths, IPs, personal email addresses, or debug-output calls. The named Windows mutex is a test synchronization object, not a private path or host identifier. No breakpoint or debugger call was added.

Full details: No Hardcoded Ui Styling

Explanation

The PR changes only WPF test code under gui/ChronoMock.App.Tests. The added lines add assertions, comments, and a coverage threshold. They do not add or change XAML, WPF code-behind styling, shared resources, or reusable controls.

Full details: No Obvious Performance Problems

Explanation

No clear performance problem was introduced. The Rust CDP, browser pacing, shim, session-identity, and attach changes are test-only. The WPF addition performs one linear scan over sampled colour counts off the UI invocation. The mutation runner changes C# builds to one solution build instead of one build per selected project. No new UI polling, large collection insertion, per-item external call, or O(n^2) processing is present.

Full details: Desktop Robustness

Explanation

The pull request changes only test, test-harness, mutation-registry, and mutation-runner code. The changed Rust helpers are under test scopes, and the GUI changes are under ChronoMock.App.Tests; no application asset loading, settings persistence, user-facing long operation, destructive action, admin request, or network call was added. The date and number code is test coverage and diagnostic formatting, not application parsing or persistence.

Full details: Safe File Parsing

Explanation

No unsafe file parsing was introduced. The changes use test-controlled paths with std::fs::OpenOptions, std::fs::read_to_string, and C# File.Exists; they do not parse files into executable objects, expand formulas, resolve entities, or add archive/XML/XAML parsing. The new JSON values are CDP test messages, and entries.json remains processed by the existing runner logic.

Full details: System Changes Are Reversible

Explanation

The pull request changes test code, test fixtures, and the mutation runner only. The changed CDP browser helpers are under #[cfg(test)] and use a loopback socket; they do not change network filters, proxy, firewall, or system state. The session identity changes add a named mutex and adjust test process timing, but do not change the existing clock hook or injection implementation. No changed code modifies system time, services, registry, drivers, or other listed system controls.

Full details: Clear User-Facing Text

Explanation

No application user-facing text changes were introduced. The diff changes test descriptions, comments, harness strings, test assertion diagnostics, and mutation-runner diagnostics; it does not change UI, localization, or runtime error/confirmation text. No tooltip, vague button label, raw exception, or inconsistent user-facing term is introduced.

Full details: No Resource Leaks

Explanation

No leak condition is introduced. The changes are test and mutation-runner changes; the new CDP browser helper is under #[cfg(test)]. Its server socket and thread are joined by the updated test. The session identity probe closes the opened mutex handles, releases and closes the creator handle, and joins both output-drain threads. The clock harness only adds test clock movement. No application timer, subscription, cache, stream, process, or native allocation gains an unbounded lifetime.

Full details: Scope, Duplication And Docs

Explanation

The PR changes the mutation runner's clean-tree C# build step from building each selected test project to building gui/ChronoMock.slnx. The PR description mentions this change, but the repository's mutation-testing documentation in CONTRIBUTING.md is unchanged and does not document the new solution-build requirement. No public API or duplicate helper issue is evident.

Resolution

Update CONTRIBUTING.md's Mutation testing section to document that C# mutation parts build gui/ChronoMock.slnx before tests, and clarify when release cores are required. Keep the script comments as implementation detail.

The concern is refuted. .github/workflows/ci.yml builds both release cores before running the non-Integration C# tests, so the new assertion does not fail because the regular CI job omitted the required setup.

…e new rate, the paced fake browser never reads a timed-out socket, and the late-read test waits for the core with a deadline

- The drift scenario only asked that performance.now did not step back after a correction of the wall
carried it past a scheduled change. It now also advances and asks for the new rate. Measured with
the rate change taken out of settle: the old check still passed and the new one fails (60000 where
  1000 is due). (Review finding.)
- fake_browser_paced read the same socket again after a receive had timed out, which Winsock documents
as leaving the connection in an indeterminate state that should be closed. A thread of its own now
reads with plain blocking reads, the quiet is a timed wait on what that thread hands over, and the
socket is shut down at the end so the thread cannot be left in its read. All 188 CDP tests pass on
  it. (Review finding.)
- The late-read test waited for the core without a bound. A core that came to wait for its target would
wait on the probe, the probe on the gate and the test on the core. It now polls the core with a
deadline of 60 s, opens the gate either way, kills the core on the deadline and fails with what the
core said, and a failed wait is an error rather than ignored. Measured with the deadline set to
300 ms: the test failed in 0.3 s and left no process behind. (Review finding.)

…y its address

`held::tests::a_view_is_unmapped_unless_the_session_takes_it` asked VirtualQuery whether anything
was mapped at the address of a view it had just dropped. The tests of the chrono-mech binary map
memory in parallel, so memory another test took there made the question answer "mapped" - red in
the Gates job of donislawdev#112 and in two parts of each full mutation run on donislawdev#113, with no mutation applied.

The test now writes a random, never zero marker into each view and reads it back through
ReadProcessMemory on its own process, which fails instead of faulting when the page is gone, and
only from a committed mapped view. Before the question about the dropped view it maps a new view at
the same address, so the case CI ran into happens in every run. Going back to a question about the
address is red in 50 of 50 runs of the test alone and in 10 of 10 runs of the whole library, the
fixed test green in 100 of 100 and 20 of 20.

A guard failing in `a_target_dropped_before_it_runs_is_ended` no longer leaves a suspended ping
behind.

Six registry entries for held.rs, which had none: the view never unmapped, the view handed to the
session unmapped anyway, the target left suspended, the guard left armed after the hand-over, any
view at the address taken for ours, and a question that sees nothing. All six caught.
