What was missing

The registry tests/mutation/entries.json held no entry for the six R5 waves (#103, #104, #105, #109, #110, #111) beyond the seven r5-a6 ones for held.rs (#114). Those waves added 137 tests. Their revert probes were measured by hand when each wave was made, and the PR descriptions say so, but no probe was kept where the weekly run could repeat it, so a later change could turn any of those tests into a decoration without anything going red.

What changes

One entry for every test the six waves added, named r5-w1 to r5-w5b by wave, each a mutation of the code that test guards, with the test named exactly:

Wave PR Entries
1 #103 22 (14 Rust, 8 C#)
2 #104 32 (31 Rust, 1 C#)
3 #105 18 (16 Rust, 2 C#)
4 #109 10 (9 Rust, 1 C#)
5a #110 21
5b #111 22

125 entries, 877 in all. Three of the 137 tests are helper processes another test starts (probe_*), and ten were named by entries already (held.rs, inject.rs and two of the shim's), so every one of the other 124 is named by at least one entry now. Where a mutation of the shim would have repeated one of the r4-14 or r4-16 entries, another was chosen.

Mutations follow the likely regression: the fix taken out (Some(3) naming the internal error again, the rename of the evidence file back to a copy, the early return for a child its loader ended), a bound moved by one, a condition dropped. Two drive a real session (debugged_child, loader_failure) and rebuild the hook (build: debug), one reads the release binaries (build: release).

What the entries found

  • ReverseAnalysisTests.A_date_with_an_offset_gets_its_own_zone_line was red when run alone (BASELINE RED). It checks that two keys have a text by asking the resource lookup, which answers with the key itself when no application is running, so it passed only when some other test had started the shared WPF host first. It asks through WpfTestHost.Invoke now, which starts the host with its strings. The other twelve tests that call TranslationKeyConverter.Resolve were run one by one, all green alone.
  • the_machine_is_read_from_a_pe_header never looked at the PE signature (MISSED for r5-w4 a header without the PE signature is read anyway). A file that starts with MZ and whose offset leads to anything else, a 16-bit program for one, would have had two unrelated bytes read as its machine. The test now gives it a header with NE\0\0 there and expects none.

Measured

  • tests/mutation/mutate.ps1 -Only "r5-wN " per wave: 22, 32, 18, 10, 21 and 22 caught, 125 of 125, no entry red before its mutation once the C# test above was fixed.
  • Every test the six waves added is named by an entry, checked by a script that reads the tests each merge added and the registry: 134 of 134 (the three helper processes left out).
  • Where a test could go red for another reason than its mutation, the two that drive a real session were run by hand with the mutation in: the debugged child stood 10 007 ms ("the hook waited for its load in the debugger's own thread"), and the child its loader ended was counted on the real clock (verdict partial, inheritance.children_uncovered). Both green again with the hook put back, its source byte for byte the one before.
  • The registry round-trips through json.dumps(indent=2) byte for byte, no name given twice.
  • tools/gates.ps1 -Changed: 12 of 12, Rust 1075 tests and C# 875 (the counts before this change, no test added or taken away), harness 229 of 229 on x64 and x86.

Test-only change, nothing for CHANGELOG.md.

Review round (e1ce7e4)

One CodeRabbit comment, on ReverseAnalysisTests.cs line 72, valid and fixed further than suggested.

  • An empty text passed as a text. TranslationKeyConverter.Resolve hands an empty resource back as it is, so Assert.NotEqual(key, ...) passed for a key whose value was "". The guard of non-empty strings in LocalizationTests covers only the keys the core emits, and these two are the window's own. Fixed with one change from the suggestion: the lookup went through the running application, which reads only the default language, while the test's summary says both keys have a text in both languages, so Polish was never checked. The test now reads each language with LocalizationService.Load on the shared host, the way that guard does, and is red with "keys with no text: ..." for a missing or empty one.
  • Revert probe: two new entries, r5-w2 the zone line of a date with an offset has no Polish text and r5-w2 the reading of a date with an offset has no English text, each emptying one value. Both caught. With the earlier assertion put back, both MISSED, which is the case the comment described and the one it did not.
  • Measured after the round: the test green alone, the three entries naming it caught, tools/gates.ps1 -Changed 3 of 3 (C# 875, the same count), hygiene 23 of 23. 127 entries in this PR, 879 in the registry.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • Expanded automated coverage for executable-file detection, translation loading, command-line handling, timing, browser discovery, calendar validation, interface behavior, protocol serialization, and installer packaging.
    • Added scenarios for edge cases and environment-dependent behavior, including cases that require a live browser or external test setup.

…ies, and two tests made to prove what they say

The six R5 waves (#103, #104, #105, #109, #110, #111) added 137 tests whose revert probes were
measured by hand and kept nowhere the weekly run repeats them. Every one of them is named by an
entry now, r5-w1 to r5-w5b, each a mutation of the code its test guards, all caught with
mutate.ps1 -Only wave by wave. Three of the tests are helper processes, ten had entries already.

Two entries found a test that did not prove what it says. A C# test of the calculator's zone line
was red when run alone: it read the strings through an application only another test had started,
and asks through the shared WPF host now. The test of the PE header reader never gave it a header
without the PE signature, so a mutation dropping that check went unseen. It does now.

Full details: Tests For Changed Behavior

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes only test code and the mutation-test registry. It does not change product runtime behavior. The Rust test adds an assertion, and the C# test keeps the same NotEqual assertion while invoking the shared host. The diff contains no deleted or skipped tests and no weakened assertions.

Full details: No Secrets Or Debug Leftovers

Explanation

No prohibited files or debug leftovers were added. The PR changes only three existing source/JSON files. The 125 new mutation entries contain no credentials, tokens, private URLs, e-mails, IP addresses, local absolute paths, or debug-call patterns. The debugged/debugger text is test naming and metadata, not leftover debug code.

Full details: No Hardcoded Ui Styling

Explanation

PASS. The pull request changes a Rust test, a WPF test method, and the mutation registry. The WPF change only wraps a translation lookup in WpfTestHost.Invoke; it adds no XAML, control styling, layout values, fonts, colors, sizes, or duplicated UI controls.

Full details: No Obvious Performance Problems

Explanation

No clear performance problem is introduced. The PR adds mutation-registry data and test assertions only. The WPF change performs two small resource lookups through the existing shared host; it does not add polling, large collection updates, or heavy UI-thread work. The mutation runner already executes isolated mutations per entry, so the added process runs are required by the registry and are not a batchable per-item application operation.

Full details: Desktop Robustness

Explanation

The PR changes only test code and mutation-registry data. The Rust change is inside #[cfg(test)]; the C# change performs a resource lookup through the existing WpfTestHost and creates no window or long operation. The 125 registry entries describe temporary mutation edits; they do not change application behavior. No changed code adds working-directory asset loading, non-atomic settings writes, culture-sensitive parsing, uncancellable work, destructive actions, admin elevation, or undisclosed network calls.

Full details: Safe File Parsing

Explanation

No safe-file-parsing failure is introduced. The 125 new entries are valid JSON data; their 35 edit paths are repository-relative, contain no traversal or absolute path, and use only the allow-listed runners and build values. The mutation script reads the registry with System.Text.Json JsonDocument.Parse and applies literal source edits, not executable JSON values. The test changes use controlled std::fs fixtures and the existing WpfTestHost. Its localization path validates culture tags before Path.Combine, and LocalizationService uses JsonSerializer.Deserialize<Dictionary<string, string>> with string-only values. No new XML/XAML, archive, CSV/XLSX, formula, external-entity, arbitrary-type, or unbounded external-file parsing path is added.

Full details: System Changes Are Reversible

Explanation

PASS — The PR changes tests and mutation-registry data only. The Rust change edits an in-memory PE header. The C# change invokes a process-local WPF test host. The new JSON entries describe temporary test mutations; they do not change production hook, injection, registry, service, driver, firewall, proxy, or system-time behavior.

Full details: Clear User-Facing Text

Explanation

The PR does not change product user-facing text. The diff changes two test files and adds mutation-registry metadata. Added comments and assertion messages are test-only text. The strings in tests/mutation/entries.json are source-edit metadata, not runtime UI or error messages. Therefore, the tooltip, label, error, confirmation, and terminology checks do not apply.

Full details: No Resource Leaks

Explanation

No resource leak is introduced. The Rust change only mutates an in-memory test header. The C# change routes one assertion through the existing shared WpfTestHost; WpfTestHost.cs is unchanged, and its single assembly-level host is not created per invocation. The 125 registry additions are static mutation data, not runtime resource-management code. No new event subscription, timer, file, process, handle, task, cache, or image lifecycle appears in the PR.

Full details: Scope, Duplication And Docs

Explanation

The PR scope matches its title and description. The diff adds 125 mutation-registry entries and makes two test-only assertion changes. The entries are appended to tests/mutation/entries.json; they add no runtime functionality, UI, helpers, or API. The C# test reuses the existing WpfTestHost.Invoke architecture. No CLI, configuration, build, persisted-data, or user-facing behavior changes require documentation or a changelog update. The registry has no duplicate names or duplicate definitions.

15295-15310: 🎯 Functional Correctness

The concern is refuted. crates/mech/src/lib.rs already imports QueryUnbiasedInterruptTimePrecise from windows::Win32::System::WindowsProgramming and calls it with no arguments, using the returned value. The mutation uses the same binding and call form. A failed release build is returned as BROKEN, not caught, so the runner does not record a compiler error as a successful mutation.

No change is required.

…each language, not just one that differs from its key

The lookup went through the running application, which hands an empty resource back as it is and
reads the default language only, so an empty English text passed and the Polish one was never
looked at, while the test's summary says both keys have a text in both languages. It reads each
language with LocalizationService.Load on the shared host now, the way the guard of the core's keys
does.

Measured: two new entries empty one value each, Polish and English, both caught. With the earlier
assertion put back, both MISSED.
