What this adds

  • eml setting layout (simple by default, newsletter). newsletter puts the text in the frame a mailing list sends: a title, a Read more button and a footer with an unsubscribe link, in a table 600 pixels wide styled by a style sheet and by style attributes. The plain text writes out the addresses the HTML puts behind its links, so alternative still carries the same words in both parts.
  • List header lines after Subject: List-Id (RFC 2919), List-Unsubscribe with a mailto: and an https address (RFC 2369, RFC 8058, in the order of RFC 8058's own example) and List-Unsubscribe-Post: List-Unsubscribe=One-Click. The opaque part of the https address is the message's own sixteen digits, so the size of a newsletter does not depend on its seed.
  • Manifest: layout for every message, unsubscribe_url only for a newsletter.
  • The setting says there is no DKIM signature, so a mail program that follows RFC 8058 offers no one-click unsubscribe. Nothing in the frame is fetched when the message is opened. Messages inside stay simple, and simple writes the bytes it always wrote (every existing golden hash unchanged).

Try it

tfg generate --format eml --size 8kb --set layout=newsletter --set body=alternative --out out

out/manifest.json says "layout": "newsletter" and gives unsubscribe_url, the same address List-Unsubscribe offers and the footer links to.

tfg generate --format eml --size 1kb --set layout=newsletter --set body=alternative --out out2

Refused, exit code 4: EML cannot be smaller than 2117 B - a newsletter holds its header lines and the frame around its text.

Measured on messages from the program

  • The structural check on 960 messages (both layouts, every text, every encoding, both line endings, with pictures, attachments, a forwarded message and a single byte character set, four sizes each): all accepted, and all refused when told the other layout. Its first run caught a frame line of 79 characters, now split.
  • Python's email package reads the three list lines with no defect. mailparser 3.9.39 parses them into list.id, list.unsubscribe.mail and .url, and list["unsubscribe-post"].
  • Nu HTML Checker: no error in the frame, only the table attributes it calls obsolete (width, cellpadding, cellspacing, align) and a missing lang.

Checked locally

Cheap gates, parity, the site, the registry and sentence catalogues, the translations, the screen references, the eml reader guard (280 messages through Python), the golden hashes, golangci-lint on the touched packages (0 issues). The new guards' eight mutation entries were each applied by hand and went red with the guard's own message.

Not run: the full guard package, mailparser locally (CI has it), try-named.py.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added an optional newsletter layout for EML messages, with branded HTML and plain-text content, a read-more link, mailing-list headers, and unsubscribe links.
    • Added a layout setting with “simple” as the default. Newsletter messages can include an unsubscribe address in their manifest.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Newsletter validation now checks that unsubscribe links and headers match, and rejects remote HTML resources and malformed message content.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the EML settings documentation and added English and Polish translations for the layout options.

layout=newsletter puts the text in the frame a mailing list sends: a title,
a Read more button and a footer with an unsubscribe link, in a table 600
pixels wide styled by a style sheet and by style attributes. The plain text
writes out the addresses the HTML puts behind its links, so both parts still
carry the same words. The message carries List-Id (RFC 2919),
List-Unsubscribe with a mailto and an https address (RFC 2369, RFC 8058) and
List-Unsubscribe-Post, and the manifest gives the https address as
unsubscribe_url. Its opaque part is the message's own sixteen digits, so the
size of a newsletter does not depend on its seed. There is no DKIM
signature, so a mail program that follows RFC 8058 offers no one-click
unsubscribe, and the setting says so. Nothing in the frame is fetched when
the message is opened. Messages inside stay simple, and layout=simple writes
the bytes it always wrote.

The structural check reads the list lines, the frame of each text and what
an HTML part would fetch, and compares the words of the plain text without
its addresses with what the HTML shows without its head. A guard holds the
one address in the manifest, the header and every footer, and breaks
messages the program wrote eight ways for the checker to refuse. Python's
email package and mailparser read the three lines, and the Nu HTML Checker
finds no error in the frame.

📝 Walkthrough

Adds an EML layout setting with simple as the default and a newsletter option. Newsletter output includes framed plain-text and HTML bodies, mailing-list headers, and an unsubscribe URL in the manifest. The strict checker validates newsletter headers, body framing, alternative text, and HTML resource constraints.

The newsletter layout works as described. However, the strict checker can still accept two kinds of faulty newsletter: one whose plain text carries extra links not present in the HTML, and one whose HTML loads a remote object when opened. Tighten both checks before merging so the checker cannot report invalid messages as valid.

Full details: Safe File Parsing

Explanation

The PR adds an unbounded backtracking regex in internal/oracle/strict.py:3098-3101: re.sub(r"<head>.*?</head>", ..., flags=re.DOTALL). eml_texts calls eml_shown for every alternative message at line 3088. A malformed HTML part with repeated <head> tokens and no closing </head> makes this pattern rescan the remaining input from each token. The measured runtime grew from 0.026 s at 800 tokens to 0.418 s at 3,200 tokens. The entry point also reads the entire file with handle.read() at lines 3486-3487, and total file size is not bounded. This creates a PR-introduced hang risk for malformed or huge EML input.

Resolution

Replace the re.sub(r"<head>.*?</head>", ...) call with an incremental html.parser.HTMLParser subclass, or a linear state machine that skips head content without backtracking. Feed bounded chunks and reject input above a defined maximum before parsing. Keep the existing tag/text checks after the safe parse.

…lain text keeps any other address

The check asked an HTML part only for src in double quotes, so object
data, a td background, srcset, a video poster, a refresh and a src in single
quotes all passed. Python's own HTML parser now reads every attribute: an
address in any of them but a link's href is refused, so is a src that is not
a cid: picture and a link element, and styles are still read for url( and
@import.

The plain text dropped every word holding :// before its words were
compared with the HTML, so an address added in the middle passed. The frame
is read first, and only its two addresses, where it puts them, are taken
out.

The head was matched by a pattern that read the rest of the part again from
every
left open, 0.3 s at 3 200 of them. It is found instead, 0.06 s
at 12 800.

The canary breaks messages the program wrote nineteen ways, eleven of them
new.
