The OSV actions are pinned by commit, but each runs the Docker image ghcr.io/google/osv-scanner-action by tag, and a tag can be pushed again. Pinning the action does not reach that layer.

What changes

  • .github/osv-scanner-digest records the image digest (sha256:71ad04ab…, the one behind v2.6.0 today).
  • .github/scripts/osv_scanner_image.sh compares every image of that repository on the runner with it, and fails on another digest, on no image at all, and on a file of the wrong shape. The runner pulls the image while setting the job up, before the first step, so the check runs before anything runs the image.
  • Both OSV workflows run it as their first step after the checkout. In the pull request workflow it runs before the checkout of the base, so the digest read is the branch's own.
  • dependabot.yml says that an update of the action goes red until the new digest is written.
  • TestTheScannerImageIsCheckedBeforeItRuns holds the step in every job that runs the scanner, ahead of the scan and of any git checkout.
  • The deprecated --output and --gh-annotations give way to --output-file and --output-files. table:#stdout is named because the reporter stops printing the list of findings once the annotations go to a terminal stream. Measured on v2.6.0: the JSON, the SARIF, the annotations and the list come out byte for byte as before.

Checked

  • The script, by hand on the same image: the recorded digest passes, a digest one character off fails, a file of the wrong shape fails, no image fails.
  • Four mutation entries on the new guard, all caught.
  • The first run of this pull request is the first time the check runs on a runner.

This touches .github/workflows, so it is merged from the browser.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • Pull request and weekly vulnerability scans now verify the scanner image before running. Scan results are available in standardized report formats, and pull request scans continue to fail when vulnerabilities are detected.
  • Documentation
    • Repository update guidance now includes additional review considerations and instructions for validating scanner image updates.

The OSV actions are pinned by commit, but each runs the Docker image
ghcr.io/google/osv-scanner-action by tag, and a tag can be pushed again.
The runner pulls that image while setting the job up, before the first
step, so a first step now compares it with .github/osv-scanner-digest and
fails on another digest or on no image at all. The scan does not start.

In the pull request workflow the check runs before the checkout of the
base, so the digest read is the branch's own. A Dependabot update of the
action goes red until its new digest is written, which dependabot.yml now
says next to the other two things a reviewer needs to know.

TestTheScannerImageIsCheckedBeforeItRuns holds the step in every job that
runs the scanner, ahead of the scan and of any git checkout, and holds the
digest file to one sha256 digest.

The deprecated --output and --gh-annotations give way to --output-file and
--output-files. table:#stdout is named, because the reporter stops printing
the list of findings once the annotations go to a terminal stream. Measured
on v2.6.0: the JSON, the SARIF, the annotations and the list come out byte
for byte as before.

📝 Walkthrough

The pull-request and weekly OSV workflows now verify the scanner image digest before scanning. They also use updated scan and reporter output options. New tests inspect digest format and workflow step ordering.

Changes: OSV Scanner Workflows

Layer / File(s) Summary
Record and verify the scanner image digest
.github/dependabot.yml, .github/osv-scanner-digest, .github/scripts/osv_scanner_image.sh
The repository records the scanner image digest. A script validates the digest format and checks local scanner images against it. Dependabot guidance describes the digest update requirement.
Check the image before OSV scans
.github/workflows/osv-pull-request.yml, .github/workflows/osv-weekly.yml, internal/guard/scannerimage_test.go
Both workflows run the image check before scanning and use updated scan and reporter output options. Tests validate the digest format and check-step placement in scanner jobs.

The scanner check can accept a malformed digest record, and tests may miss a broken or bypassed check. Tighten validation and test the script before relying on this protection.

Full details: No Obvious Performance Problems

Explanation

The new script runs one external docker image inspect process for every unique cached scanner image (.github/scripts/osv_scanner_image.sh:39-41). Docker inspection accepts multiple image IDs, so a runner with many cached tags causes avoidable process startup and Docker-daemon calls. This loop is introduced by the pull request.

Full details: Safe File Parsing

Explanation

The new guard reads YAML and digest files without path or size protection. In internal/guard/scannerimage_test.go:54 and :91, os.ReadFile follows symlinks; a workflow or digest symlink can make the test read outside the repository. The workflow read is also unbounded, then duplicated by string, withoutYamlComments, and strings.Split at :95 and :150, so a huge YAML file can cause excessive memory use. The shell script has the same issue at .github/scripts/osv_scanner_image.sh:27: tr -d '[:space:]' < "$file" follows the optional path and reads it without a size limit. It also accepts internal whitespace after removing it, so malformed digest input is normalized instead of rejected.

Resolution

Restrict every input to an existing regular file beneath the intended repository directory. Reject symlinks and other non-regular files before opening, and use a no-follow open where the platform supports it. Replace os.ReadFile plus unbounded string conversion with a bounded reader such as io.LimitReader, and reject data beyond the limit before parsing. Parse workflow YAML with gopkg.in/yaml.v3 into narrow structs instead of the ad hoc withoutYamlComments/strings.Split parser. In the shell script, bound the digest read, reject extra or embedded whitespace rather than using tr -d, and reject an unsafe optional path or remove that argument.

Full details: Clear User-Facing Text

Explanation

The new digest-format error identifies the problem but does not tell the user how to fix it. In .github/scripts/osv_scanner_image.sh:29, it says that $file does not hold one SHA-256 digest and that there is nothing to compare, but it gives no corrective action. The other mismatch and no-image messages do provide next steps.

- Line 27: Update the `expected` digest parsing in the shell script to preserve
the file’s whitespace until validation, allowing whitespace only around one
complete SHA-256 digest and rejecting any internal whitespace before image
comparison. Add coverage for this shell parser using a digest with internal
whitespace; testing `isImageDigest` alone does not cover this validation.

Review comments at @internal/guard/scannerimage_test.go:
- Line 51: In the workflow-directory error handling, replace the skip with a
test failure so a missing or moved directory fails instead of passing without
inspection. Keep the existing error context in the failure message, and ensure a
collector or file walk that finds no scanner job is also reported as a failure
rather than skipped.
- Around line 62-64: Extend TestTheScannerImageIsCheckedBeforeItRuns to execute
osv_scanner_image.sh with a stub docker command and verify matching and
mismatching digests, a malformed digest file, and a missing image; retain the
existing workflow-order assertions.

From the CodeRabbit review of #187, each remark checked against the code
first.

The script took every space out of the digest file before reading it, so
a digest split in two was joined into one that passed, while the guard in
Go refused the same file. It now matches the whole file at once: one
digest, white space around it and none inside. Its message says what to
write and where a run prints the value.

Nothing ran the script, so one reduced to "exit 0" passed every test.
TestTheScannerImageScriptRefusesEveryImageButTheRecordedOne runs it with a
docker in front of the real one that answers from files, in ten cases -
the recorded image, white space around it, another image behind the tag,
two images with one of them another, no image, a digest split in two, two
digests, a tag, no file, and a docker with no daemon - and asks each for
its exit code and for the reason it prints. The stub's own image ids have
to appear in the output, so the test knows it is not talking to the real
docker. On Windows it wants Git's bash and says so when it finds another.

The guard on the workflows fails rather than skips when their directory is
gone, since the check would have gone with it.
