mutation: the HOLES of the first CI runs, the canary's complaint, and a dated OSV exception for mcp - #195
Conversation
… verdict The detail a BROKEN verdict carries came from a filter nothing exercised: the canary called run_test directly. It now goes through first_complaint, the function judge uses, and fails unless the complaint names the canary's file and the variable it adds. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…pins semgrep 1.181.0 and every release before it ask for mcp==1.29.0 exactly, so the fixed 1.30.0 cannot be installed beside it. The advisory is about an MCP server over Streamable HTTP, and the job runs semgrep scan, which starts none. The entry expires on 2026-11-15, after which the weekly scan is red again. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Twenty one entries are caught again. Most of them were guards that had stopped reaching what they guard: the section gap compared with two fields standing side by side since the grid, the CI ceiling counting a step's timeout for a job's, the recorded time asked in UTC on runners that live in UTC, a number box measured only where the grid makes every box a column wide, a volume path and a read only directory reaching a check other than the one named. The rest pointed at code the guard does not read, and now point where it does. Two guards skip where their tool or document is missing instead of passing quietly, so those entries are UNJUDGED there rather than HOLES. A new guard asks the window's words for four refusals the command line escapes twice. Four guards held by two layers are proven by hand, and four entries nothing could redden are removed. Review comments at @internal/guard/spacingscale_test.go:
- Around line 197-204: Update the spacing assertion around `FieldFormat` and
`FieldTargetID` so the section-gap check is not skipped when those fixed anchors
are no longer stacked. Either report the changed layout explicitly and keep the
stacking check separate from the gap check, or use `nextInColumn` with the same
`names` list as the first test so the measured pair follows the layout.
- Around line 215-243: Update the test helper fieldCell to identify the actual
grid field cell using its *fieldCell layout, rather than selecting the tallest
geometrically matching container. Add a narrow predicate in internal/gui/parts
to recognize that private layout, then filter candidates with it before
measuring bounds so the refusal area remains included.

Identify the grid field cell instead of using a geometric size extreme.
In a one-column grid, the grid container has the same width as the field cell and contains multiple fields. The current tallest-match logic can therefore measure the whole grid.
The proposed smallest-match change is unsafe. FieldSaying builds a field cell from a body and a refusal area. The body already contains the field name and control, so the smallest matching container can omit the refusal area.
Select the actual grid field cell by its *fieldCell layout. Since that type is private to internal/gui/parts, expose a narrow predicate there and filter candidates with it before measuring the bounds.

The placeholder room is one helper for both screens, which had measured it two ways. The zone child must report its own pass and has a ceiling. The narrowest form asserts it is the narrowest. The nested module list is asked with cgo off too, and only the question that needs cgo skips. The smallest drawing skips as a whole when nothing was checked. A job's timeout has to be a number above none. The section gap finds its pair of fields down a column, and a field's cell holds no other field's name. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The third step of mutation testing on CI. The first full runs left 31 entries reported as HOLE - a mutation that compiled and that no guard turned red. Each one was looked at on its own.
What changed
21 entries are caught again. Most of them were guards that had stopped reaching what they guard:
timeout-minutesas a job's and readci.ymlalone - it now reads every workflow as YAML and asks each job by name; The rest pointed at code the guard does not read, and now point where it does: the line the status bar uses when the form settles, the room the window gives an open list, the rows of values rather than the heading, the checksum file rather than the repository's own files, the golden case that is the only one of its format.
Two guards skip instead of passing quietly when their reference tool or the internal documents are missing, so the runner reports those entries as UNJUDGED there instead of HOLE.
A new guard asks the window's words for four refusals (two names that collide, a name already taken, an output directory that is a file, a directory another run holds). The command line escapes those names twice, once in the sentence and once on the way out, so mutating either layer could not turn its guard red. The window puts a refusal under its box without that second escape.
Four guards held by two layers are proven by hand (
provenByProbe): each layer was taken away alone, and the guard stayed green, then both together, and it went red. Four entries nothing could turn red are removed (1786 -> 1782).Not fixed here, four HOLEs remain: the menus outside the grid sit in folded sections the menu guards never open.
