Allow lambdas to name template parameters from function decl [GH #338] - #339
Improved C++20 and C++23 template handling when lambdas reference enclosing template parameters, including in function parameter types and enable_if conditions.
Corrected overload resolution and compiler diagnostics in affected template-substitution cases.
Generic lambdas, lambdas with their own template parameter lists, and references to template parameter packs remain outside this handling.
Lambda rescanning now binds available enclosing template arguments in supported non-generic cases. enable_if condition substitution now uses the associated template’s instantiation scope. Regression tests cover supported forms, limitations, and resulting diagnostics.
Changes: Lambda template-parameter substitution
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Bind parameters during lambda rescanning src/il.c, src/pending_changes/gh-338-lambda-template-params.txt
Rescanning checks for a matching instantiation scope and temporarily binds available parameters for supported non-generic lambdas. It restores saved symbol state afterward. The pending-change note describes supported and unsupported cases.
Condition substitution now runs within the associated template’s rescan instantiation scope. The fixture covers function-template overloads and a class member template in C++20 and C++23.
Test supported template-parameter references tests/tests/changes/gh-338-lambda-template-param.sft.cpp, tests/tests/changes/gh-338-lambda-template-param-variations.sft.cpp, tests/tests/changes/gh-338-lambda-template-param-qualified.sft.cpp, tests/tests/changes/gh-338-lambda-template-param-overload.sft.cpp, tests/tests/changes/gh-338-lambda-template-param-gnu.sft.cpp, tests/tests/changes/*.rto/*
Regression tests cover declaration contexts, qualified names, overload selection, and GNU-specific cases. Test commands and expected outputs include C++20 and C++23 configurations.
Test unsupported cases and diagnostic changes tests/tests/changes/gh-338-lambda-template-param-{generic,incomplete,limits,mismatch,outer,variations-negative}.sft.cpp, tests/tests/changes/.gh-338-lambda-template-param-{generic,incomplete,limits,mismatch,outer,variations-negative}.rto/*, tests/tests/imported/{clang/cpp/SemaCXX,gnu/cpp/cpp2a}/*
Tests record diagnostics for generic lambdas, packs, incomplete arguments, and template-argument mismatches. Imported expected outputs also change, including overload ambiguity and compilation error counts.

Before / after behavior
observed — Modified behavior in src/overload.c: eval_enable_if_attributes now brackets condition substitution with the associated template’s rescan instantiation scope.
observed — Modified behavior in tests/tests/changes/.gh-338-lambda-template-param-enable-if.rto/default.1.1.txt: Adds a fe_only test command with the test-number define, Clang version, C++20 mode, and Test_name.c input.
observed — Modified behavior in tests/tests/changes/.gh-338-lambda-template-param-enable-if.rto/default.2.1.txt: Adds a test invocation configured for Clang 210000 and C++23, defining TEST_NUMBER=2 for Test_name.c.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "Allow lambdas to name template parameters from function decl [GH #338]" matches the main change. The PR lets a lambda in a function-template declaration name that function's template parameters, and the objectives say it closes #338. The title is concise and specific. It omits the known limits: generic lambdas, lambdas with their own template parameter lists, and template parameter packs remain unsupported and are tracked in follow-up issue #346.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
The PR meets the coding requirements in [#338]. src/il.c binds supplied function-template arguments during rescan of applicable non-generic lambdas and restores symbol state. src/overload.c adds the template instantiation scope for enable_if substitution. Regression tests cover parameter types, default template arguments, constraints, exception specifications, overloads, and related declaration contexts. Tests document generic-lambda and pack limitations as follow-up work.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes stay within [#338]. Source changes implement template-parameter lookup during lambda substitution and enable_if substitution. Regression tests, diagnostic updates, imported-test updates, and the pending-change note verify or document the behavior. No unrelated feature or public API change appears in the supplied whole-PR summary.

Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 0 functions across 12 files. What's the reason to do this name matching at all? Shouldn't the scopes always be set up correctly (if nothing refers to those template parameters, then setting up the scope wasn't needed, but it shouldn't do any harm either)?

That is actually tested in gh-338-lambda-template-param-overload, where binding unconditionally without this scan picks the wrong overload. I've reworded the comment for this function to hopefully make things more clear, and rebased on main.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
In gh-338-lambda-template-param-qualified, inside every lambda there the name looks like a template parameter such as ::T. The scan reports "not named" for every parameter. Without the scan, the only way to catch the overload case is to fail whenever any parameter has no value.
gh-338-lambda-template-param-overload goes the other direction. U is named and has no value, so the copy has to fail. If you bind and never fail then the rescan will find the global U and select the wrong h.
In the most recent commit I have removed the up-front check as you pointed out.
fp compiles the source but does not run ./a.out. Therefore t1() is never evaluated in either the C++20 or C++23 case. A regression that selects the wrong pick overload can pass because both overloads return int.
Make the marker functions constexpr and assert each call result. This is a test-coverage gap, not a production defect.

The fe_only harness checks compilation only. Reversing the two conditions would still leave one viable overload for each type, and t1() would still sum to 6 because it calls each type twice. Make the functions constexpr and assert the individual results.
